A Stuff Pack that ties into an Expansion Pack? Fine with me - here’s why
Despite not even making an attempt to keep up with EA’s latest cash-grabbing efforts regarding The Sims 4, I can’t seem to escape most of these new packs that keep coming out every other week. The same is true for My First Pet Stuff, a pack that is currently VERY controversial in the Sim community.
I can absolutely understand why people are pissed the hell off about this. HOWEVER, I’m going to be the devil’s advocate here. I’ll explain why I don’t think this is a bad idea.
EA knows that pets are one of those big EP features that people are very passionate about. They know a Sims game HAS to have pets eventually, and they know that people are going to expect to be fleshed out. So from EA’s point, I’ll argue, it seems logical that having tons of content relating to pets is super duper okay and chill with everyone. People’ll eat that shit right up.
Now, they can only put a finite amount of stuff into one EP. A little less than they could in TS2′s and TS3′s EPs, strangely enough, but a fair amount of stuff regardless. So what do you do when you have a popular theme and you know people are going to like it?
You make crap that’ll tie into it! Don’t you just HATE how EPs are usually a thing on their own with features that aren’t expanded upon by any other part of the game? How each new household and each new world only uses content from that specifc pack + the base game? At least, I don’t know if you guys do but I sure as shit don’t like it.
So say you’re really passionate about pets (personally I’m not, though I have a dog IRL). You immediately bought Cats and Dogs or whatever the EP is called, but you know that’ll be the only pets-themed content EA is going to put out. No extra pet content, no pet clothes, no themed pet furniture. Nothing.Â
Then surely, you’ll be delighted to find out that, and here’s a strawman I normally don’t like the sound of, there’s an extra OPTIONAL pack that you don’t HAVE to buy that includes extra stuff, that wasn’t essential to the EP, that’s there just so YOU can have more pet stuff.Â
Well I’m not gonna lie, a fair part of me wishes it were like that for every EP. I can think of a lot of expansions that could do with their own little sub-expansion. A retrofuturistic-themed addon for Into The Future, a pack of extra Chinese content for World Adventures, a fantasy-themed store set for Open For Business...
...if you like it, great. Buy it. If you don’t, you’re (probably) not losing anything. You’ll get your favourite topic or theme eventually....probably. And it won’t be great but then again, would you really be so naive as to expect this clusterfuck of a Sims game to exceed those expectations? There’s plenty of reasons I don’t buy TS4 stuff anyway - besides the fact that I’m broke, that is.
That’s my take on it. Fight me.
