This post is going to use a very *good* resource to help the community better understand what a system is, and how it can accurately be used within the plural community outside of CDD systems. There has always been the dictionary definition, but this source breaks it down to understand WHY the definitions are what they are.
My hope is this can help people understand when "system" or "collective" may be more appropriate. I also hope this can help people who believe "system" should remain medical see that logically it can be used in non medical context. But mostly I hope this provides people a good resource for fighting misinformation.
TLDR: There are many types of systems. A system's parts are interrelated and affect the whole. A system is not just a collection of parts.
[Highlighted text is what I considered important. When I use "collective" you can substitute that with your preferred language. When I say "parts" I am not specifically referring to dissociative parts.
I HIGHLY recommend reading through the entire course. But, section 5 is most relevant. Links to the relevant pages are in the section titles.]
Types of Systems:
"Everyone is involved with things called systems – information systems, financial systems, ecological systems, computer systems, education systems; and to this list I can add many things which are often called systems by professionals in a particular field. For example, doctors talk of the nervous system in the body, therapists of the family system to which each of us belongs, engineers of fail-safe systems in a car or power station."
Define it:
"A system is an assembly of components connected together in an organized way."
"The components are affected by being in the system and the behaviour of the system is changed if they leave it."
"The central concept ‘system’ embodies the idea of a set of elements connected together which form a whole, this showing properties which are properties of the whole, rather than properties of its component parts."
"The behaviour of each element has an effect on the behaviour of the whole..."
"The behaviour of the elements and their effects on the whole are interdependent."
Language of Systems:
"If thinking in terms of systems is to be of any use it must involve more than mentally grouping a number of elements together and calling them a system. The whole point is that these elements are interrelated..."
Summary:
System: Interconnecting parts functioning as a whole. Change if you take away pieces or add more pieces. If you cut the system in half you do not get two smaller systems, but a damaged system that will not properly function. The arrangement of the pieces is crucial. The parts are connected and work together.
"Heap": A collection of parts. Essential properties are unchanged whether you add or take away pieces. When you halve a heap, you get two smaller heaps. The arrangement of the pieces is irrelevant. The parts are not connected and can function separately. Its behaviour (if any) depends on its size or on the number of pieces in the heap.
(I would replace "heap" with collective or group personally 😅)
Takeaway
My personal opinion has always been that a "system" when used by plurals, multiples, and adjacent experiences is a way to describe how multiple parts exist together in a singular body. CDD systems and IFS describe medically defined systems. Plural, spiritual, endogenic, willogenic, etc systems describes non medically defined systems.
I also believe system describes a very *specific* way that parts interconnect and affect eachother. It is not just a group of individuals parts. I think *this* is where a LOT of confusion and tension comes from. However, I also do not think as outsiders we can tell someone what is or isn't a system in their life.
But, I also do think people (and the communities) may benefit from separating system and collective more reliably. Plurality is not always a hard line that follows rules, and it may not always fit system or collective. It may also fluctuate. I also think we need to normalize changing language as things fluctuate without claiming people are faking or punishing them for being wrong.
I managed to find a pretty cheap refurbished macbook! It is on the way and i will start getting the app going for iOS release when it arrives :D
Thank you to everyone for trying the app.
Also, I have seen some, very few, but some rumors that Oceans Symphony is not secure or steals/leaks user data and i want to reassure everyone: that is absolutely not the case. Opening the Oceans Symphony app is like opening the notepad app on a PC and saving some writing to your harddrive. The data lives on your device.
Additionally, Oceans Symphony offers encryption-at-rest which will further help protect your data on the device itself.
The friends relay was something I added after much user request, only when I was able to be certain that the app would remain private, local, and secure. The friends relay shares a miniscule amount of data (specifics detailed in-app) - someone requested the ability to share full system profiles to friends, but i was unable to implement this, because the "weight" of sending image avatars (and potentially hundreds to thousands of alter profiles) through the server is way beyond what I want for the app, and what I feel capable of responsibly hosting. The only thing sent to the friends relay server is a snapshot of current front; it is only sent to the friends you confirm, and it is end-to-end encrypted.
In the future ive been thinking of building up the groundwork and infrastructure for more advanced friends sharing features, and requiring users to self host - i wouldnt be hosting the server. But it would allow users to utilize advanced friends sharing stuff under their own servers. We all know how exhausting trying to manage Simply Plural servers was! Impossibly so! I could not handle that responsibility, but its much more manageable for users to host their own servers.
I suspect the rumors come from when i first started making Oceans Symphony. I used Base44 to start it up, and had shared about it so had some users, not many and i was always open about it being vibe coded and the url was base44. Not sure how long this span was, i think i only used base44 maybe one or two months. When I was exploring the base44 dashboard i realized what it means for user data to be uploaded to and stored on servers in plaintext, which was what base44 was doing.
Essentially, different entry points like "custom field" were getting uploaded and stored, visible to me. I dont know if it links that data to the users account in any way? It was just a list of stuff i realized i certainly hadnt input - I thought everything was locked behind the users account email address (there is a specific setting in the base44 dashboard i made sure to turn on that said data tied to users accounts or something along those lines, so thatusers can only see what theyve entered, not what any other user has. I was under the impression this meant the data could only be seen by the email but with it being stored on the base44 server, that setting doesnt restrict visibility from the developer) - when i had looked at this area before it had only shown stuff i had put into the app, so i thought it was tied to/locked behind the signed in account. When i realized that i could technically access what users were putting into the app i immediately put in notices within the app, explaining how the data is stored on servers, suggesting utilization of the local data storage mode (which never sent anything to the base44 servers) and discouraging the account/cloud version.
I immediately started on disconnecting Oceans Symphony from base44. I dont remember the specific date which this was achieved, i believe within the first two months after starting OS' development, way before the google play store release or beta test.
Base44 allows you to sync to github, so I just moved everything over, and then i started using claude for development exclusively. Claude does code development, so the code itself was redesigned into being local only and completely disconnected from base44 servers. The webversion is hosted on vercel, since thats what i used for my other website pesturedrawing, but still all the data is stored locally on your device only, now that i got it all off of base44. Hmmm. I kept the base44 version live to give users time to move their data off it and i just kinda forgot about it, so i think it is still live? But i literally have not touched it in idek how long. All of my focus and work has been completely disconnected from base44, any mention of base44 entities in the code is legacy referencing and surface-level, not reflective of any current connection. The oceans-symphony.app and oceans-symphony.vercel.app pages have zero connection to base44.
Honestly after all this, I highly advise against putting any sensitive data into any app that is running on "the cloud" or data servers, especially stuff on base44, its been known to have data breaches (i didnt realize this before starting OS and honestly i was only planning it as a thing for myself i didnt plan for it to become a months long all-consuming passion project with now over 200 active users :0!!).
I have really tried my best to be abundantly clear in the app about how data is stored and how privacy is secured, because i understand the nature of this app and the incredible need for security. This is a tool i want to be able to utilize my entire forseeable future. The last thing i want is a security breach.
I am the only individual involved in the creation and running of Oceans Symphony. Im just some random guy on the internet. I dont expect users to trust me or the app blindly, especially not one within its' context. Thats why every action Ive taken has been in service to total transparency for in-app data storage, how the friends server works, whats shared, etc. So you can make that judgement confidently.
Oceans Symphony is as secure as your device is, and then some. Your data is completely and exclusively on your device. You can prove this because the app functions fully while offline and disconnected from the network (except the friends feature ofc)

A love letter to my own system, OS is designed by an AuDHD, DID system
Pluralkit: Our first ever system bot, the technology we first started using when discord was really blowing up during lockdown. As such, it’s very user friendly, easy enough to manage when you’re just starting out, keeps everything compiled in a list and can search for the commands at anytime. It’s very handy when you want to focus on communication both through alters and others in your life.
Pros: Easy to use, accessible interface and makes sharing with other people the easiest. Allows for communication through the bot both with your system and friends. Really good for recording basic information.
Cons: The privacy issue, anyone with your code can access everything that isn’t private, and you have to private everything individually. Can be rather cluttered especially for larger systems, and is very simplistic in design. Not great if you’re not a social person.
Overall Ranking: 7/10. We still currently use it for basic info and communication.
