I feel like we place a lot of value on memory and pressure ourselves to remember. Without memory, who are you? What are you? What right do I have to claim to be something, if I do not carry the memory, if I do not remember being it? Is it not enough to claim my identity as my own? We feel we must grovel, that we must minimize ourselves and our identities. We feel we have no value, no place in a community, no connection to others if we do not have memory. We belittle ourselves because we lack memory. For what? Because the word "fictive" means that we have to remember? That if we do not carry memory over, that our connection to a source is not there? It should only matter that we connected to the source strongly enough to form something in the shape of it. That is what brings us comfort, it is what gives one identity in a brain and life where we struggle to understand ourselves.
