- C. desires / motivations?

All stars share a common desire: it’s what they’re selected for, and there are very strict qualifications. It’s not enough to want love or beauty or acceptance because you lack it (though most stars do). Even extravagant ambitions for fame and power don’t make the cut. No, Stars must find dissatisfaction in the basic constraints of Reality, and seek to escape them. That is what is cultivated in them, until they split.

For all that she is self-aware, Syrine is no different. She has faced substantial hardship (one of her parents died, plus she’s disabled, she’s black, she is bi, some other unfortunate things have happened and there’s just a big pile-up stigma & bullshit going on), and fantasy very much saw her through that. But it wasn’t enough for her to be distracted and then move on. It wasn’t enough that she “succeeded” in several small arenas, that she excelled in school, that she adopted a craft (she was a very good vocalist) and was much praised for it (not infrequently in an inspirational-porn sort of way). The rewards for all those things seemed fleeting, double-edged, and pale. The moment passed: the world remained much as it had been. Limiting. Limited. And everyone assumed her wildest dream was to be able to walk! Haha, no. She wanted to swim, to float, to fly. She would not condescend to desire merely what circumstance denied her: she wanted Knowledge and Wisdom in the way that only immortal elves could have it; she desired the agility and beauty of a sea-sprite, and when she sang, she wanted it to be a Spell.

She wanted all of these things very badly. She still wants them, even though she knows she’s being used. She’s stalling intentionally. She’s needs time to solve the puzzle, to hack into the code and escape with what is hers. Jezebel of course is aware of this. She thinks it’s cute.

- L. which other characters do they like/dislike the most?

Naturally, Syrine finds the Cardmaster intoxicating (she is a Star), and she admires Jezebel, but she does not trust them. She LOVES Alice, and has a more contentious relationship with Anemone and Iris. Iris gets on her nerves, and Anemone… i mean. Amemone can be very useful, but she’s a straight-up bitch. Syrine cares for her, but in the way that you care for your most infuriatingly Awful sibling. Alice, though. Alice is interesting. There’s something “off” about her. Something Syrine very much needs to study. And also. I mean. When she smiles it’s hard not to want to give her the world.
