|     “ I can’t think of anyone more outrageous than me. ”

“ oh, well——congratulations. ”

he ducked his head down a little, looking off, and stretching a hand around after a second to give his chin a scratch.

“ should hold a contest or something, maybe. you, versus——well, every other version of you. ”

he stuck his tongue on the backs of his teeth, then let his arm drop again. the tone of his voice was dry, and——well, a tiny bit sarky.

“ y’know, like a——‘test your strength!’, ‘who wore it better?’ sort of a——thing. you’d still be my top pick, though, i think——actually. ”

he lifted his eyebrows up a tiny bit, sniffing in.

|     “ Actually, if I didn’t know any better, I’d say you were trying to do my job. Care to weigh in? ”

“ no, no, no——if i was doing your job, i’d have splattered somebody’s guts all over the place by now. ”

he brandished a digit——waved it around in a couple of circles, then went back to what he’d been doing, which was working to disentangle a sparking snarl of wires on the ground.

“ you’re not giving yourself enough credit, seriously——and we both know, that’s not like you. ”

he shot a very weighty look at the other man.

“ now——either, you can help me rewire this thing, or you can go sit over there, y’know, with your thumb up your——well. ”

he stuck his tongue on the backs of his teeth, then ducked his head down a bit——giving one of the wires he was working to unjumble an almighty yank.

“ anyway, your choice. though, as a sort of——general warning, your lady version’s just going to do it if you don’t, so——yeah. ”

he tossed the bit he’d yanked loose off to one side with some seemingly unaffected urgency, where it landed with a very audible sort of clatter.

|     “ What about you, darling? You want to kiss and make up? ”

“ oh, i think i’ll pass on that——actually. ”

he stuck his tongue on his teeth——lowered his head down a little, then stretched a hand around very slowly to massage his neck.

“ just doesn’t sound the same coming from you, somehow. ”

he grimaced a tiny bit——squidged his eyes up, then stopped what he was doing——letting his arm drop with an audible sort of thump.

|     “ Basically, we were interested in the effects of simultaneous hypnosis between—y’know, the same person. We both wound up with splitting headaches. End of story. ”

“ oh——why am i not surprised? ”

he might’ve, sort’ve——yeah, just——done a thing which was basically rolling his eyes.

“ also, i could’ve told you that. ” he grimaced a tiny bit, looking off at——well, nothing in particular. then——lifting his eyebrows a little, he stretched a hand around to scratch at the back of his neck.

“ which would’ve done——well, absolutely nothing to stop you doing whatever it was you did, exactly——probably, but——yeah. ”

he stuck his tongue on his teeth, then lowered his head down a ways.

|     “ Oh, well—‘I like you very much too, my dear’. ” He spoke in a snide, derisive tone, and proceeded to roll his eyes.

“ no, no, no——wait, hold on——hold on, did i say that? ”

he ducked his head down into the collar of his shirt, sniffed a tiny bit, then squidged up his eyes, and——yeah, that was when it hit him——yeah.

yeah.

“ oh——oh, okay——oh. ”

he stuck his tongue against his teeth, and took a step backwards——then he sort of——well, wielded a digit at the other man.

|     “ Well, don’t expect me to apologize. ”

“ sorry——sorry, i’m not that thick, am i? ”

he shot a vaguely irritated look in the other man’s direction——and then he went sort of stiff all over, digging his tongue into his teeth all of a sudden.

“ oh, hold on——hold on, actually, don’t answer that. ”

yeah——walked into that one, hadn’t he?

“ also, my expectations are very low——i mean, they’re very low, honestly. ”

he screwed his eyes up a bit, looking away again——then, after a moment, he went in with one of his hands to massage his head methodically.

|     “ Oh, I told him as much. Before I killed him. ”

“ oh, c’mon, you didn’t——oh, you did——you did, okay. ” he stuck his tongue against his teeth, and then he sort of made to massage his jaw with his unoccupied hand.

“ i could kiss you, which——i won’t, because, well, obvious reasons. ”

he’d looked the other way——then he looked at the other man, and then away again.

“ i mean, hold on, what was it you said? ”

he squidged his eyes up a little. his voice was very dry, but——well, not altogether insincere.
