sorry to butt in, but i never took this literally? or i was never taught to take it literally, instead ive always taken it to mean that riches dont guarantee happiness, that you can be rich and unhappy - not that riches /cant/ make you happy :3
i know what you mean. of course being rich is not equivalent to being happy, but not being rich doesn't mean you're happy either. the saying pisses me off because it implies happiness is the same for everyone. for some people, happiness is being RICH!! for some happiness might be having 4 kids, or be loved, etc.
how can you say money can't buy happiness? tell that to a child with leukemia who cant afford hospital bills (for example)
