but akshually, language evolves and grammar is a deeply political concept that has been used in most countries throughout history to protect those in power. APA also allows use of they/them pronouns in scholarly writing: https://apastyle.apa.org/blog/singular-they
The use of they/them as gender neutral singular has a history that goes back hundreds of years. Shakespeare even used it. There's also this excerpt from a blog post I think details this problem well:
