Coates considers herself lucky that she hadnβt seen Thelma & Louise until maybe five years ago. βI'd managed to move through my life without knowing that they die, and so I truly screamed, I couldn't believe that they went over the cliff,β she says. Righting that wrong, 35 years after the filmβs 1991 release, wasnβt her intention, but Coates is happy that some viewers see that as the takeaway: βThat is so telling that the times have moved on, that that doesnβt feel your only option.β
