August 6th, 1986 is a really special day, and Demake86 is an homage to that day :^)
The conceit: Pack a Metroidvania into 8^6 pixels! 8x8 pixels per tile, 8x8 tiles per room, 8x8 rooms in the whole contiguous map.
Can you beat it in 86 seconds?

Mermay 2026 day 21: amphibian
Clone trooper of the day: Syke
I’m curious to know your inner workings and behind the scenes when you were making Syke. I’m vaguely familiar with the original, but what about them did you change, and for why?
Also, that sigil is cool af, how did you come up with it and what does it represent?
I was hoping I would get Syke questions!!!
Okay, so for those not in the know, Syke is the Hollowtown reimagining of the Iepfb character, Hyp.
Now, watching the original Hyp in action, Imma be honest, my entire opinion of her is based on her cool edgy centipede design. Thats all I really like about her. Her cool tentacles and her edgy vibes
Aside from that, her personality was pretty abrasive and venomous. She did NOT care for anyone she was working with and seemed to just enjoy being mean to them
This aggressiveness was one of the few traits about Hyp I could recall off hand so with that I rolled with it. Fun fact, I actually introduced Syke EARLIER than intended. She wasn't originally gonna be in entry 3. I just needed another antagonist. Truthfully, without sounding demeaning, Syke's entire role in Hollowtown is that of the threat. the hazard. The monster to avoid. I just needed another antagonist.
I honestly didn't even like drawing her at first cause we kinda needed to learn how to draw her as we did. But every panel I added to her, the more I began to actually really really like this character.
One thing we were always going to do was really lean into the centipede of it all. Mandibles, sharper teeth, antennae, her main gimmick from the start was that her face could open up into a real centipede.
She was already aggressive, so I decided to give her the personality of a centipede too. Turn that aggression up to an animalistic and bloodthirsty extent. Centipedes are also fast, so she was going to be chasing Laz and Lucida down the entire mansion.
If she was only to be the threat, I wanted her to excel in that role.
You'll notice that in certain parts her Centipedicles change color to darker and yellow. I wanted that to be a tell that she was in an elevated form. A venomous one. But I never managed to squeeze in a scene where she uses any venom.
ON the topic of Venom, at a certain point we noticed that due to the new hair and edgy traits of Hyp, she was invoking a specific aesthetic.
I dunno how to put it into words or if there's a name for it? But like... edgy girl, black, red, blood, anime? I dunno how else to put it. But I did notice it and I wanted to try and research for new traits to add. I don't think Elfen Lied is an exact match, but the best I can say is that the male equivalent is probably Carnage. WHICH BRINGS ME TO-
As soon as Syke became more fleshed out. I really saw the vision for who she was. And the answer was Carnage. She's Carnage if instead of a serial killer he just exclusively ate people. Mass murderer, bloodthirsty, manic, weird, freaky, not too big on clothes, REALLY big on sharp objects. I actually based some of her movements and attacks on this animation!
Which finally brings us to her Sigil. How did I come up with it? From her first couple of drafts I felt like the character needed some other trait to really solidify her energy and edge. I considered just blood splattered on her, but that would be too hard to draw consistently. It was only thanks to Carnage that I found the perfect kind of symbol to represent the energy of Syke.
The symbiote spiral. I don't entirely know what it means, but I saw it on Carnage and other symbiotes, and I knew that what I wanted was something that resembled this. It was simply a matter of adding some centipedic differences.
The spines represent centipede legs. The ones Syke sharpens into blades. I'm trying to do this thing where every creepypasta character has their own symbol. Toby has his ax Operator Symbol. Lazari has her butterflies. Hoodie has that iconic frown, I thought some iconography of her own would really make Syke stand out. The one she wears is almost definitely made of blood. Thats why there are other imperfect splatters near it on her hoodie.
Aaaaand I should address that she is only wearing a hoodie. I'll be honest, I don't really know why she was half naked in the original, but after several drafts of Syke with additional clothing.... I dunno, it felt inauthentic. Like if we clothed this deranged homeless woman it wouldn't be... Syke. Honestly she's probably only wearing that hoodie as a trophy from one of her victims. She was... probably completely naked before this. No reason to bother with human clothing when you're a demon in her mind.
Oh! Also she's a demon now. She was even going to be the same species of demon as Lazari and Stripes, but that didn't work out since their powers were too different. So instead she's something called a Hellspawn. Unlike Lazari and Stripes, Hellspawns are completely demon minded. No pesky human instincts or values to cloud her judgement. I wanted her to illustrate what most demons are when they are not ex humans or hybrids... even though Syke is still a hybrid technically. A completely animalistic beast that only resembles a human in presentation and is entirely motivated by food.
I was also gonna make her Centipedicles out of blood. I dunno if thats still canon since you can see her blood is blue like a Centipede.
I could probably talk about Syke for several more hours cause so much went into this character. And i prolly will when someone else asks a Syke question which I HOPE they do. I also may somewhat hope Syke gets to have some fanart too like Lazari did.
But imma end it here. This post is already long enough so I'll save her lore and backstory for some other post. I wanna make a model sheet of her one day.

Rewatching Knives Out and I think my favourite thing about this movie is how much of a ball Chris Evans is obviously having.
He's been Captain America for like a decade. People see him and remember he had played the pinnacle of moral decisions wrapped in spandex. It is painfully obvious that Ransom is the killer the longer the movie goes on, but there's this little voice in the back of your head that goes "but this is Steve Rogers we're talking about! He didn't do this!"
He works alongside Marta, offers to keep her secret of 'killing' Harlan in exchange for his part of the inheritance, and does all these things with an asshole-ish smile and just enough rudeness to keep him distant and suspicious, but this is Steve Fucking Rogers. He didn't do this.
But he did. And you can just tell Chris Evans loved every goddamn minute of it.
