Heartbeat

“Your heart is beating really fast.”

The comment cut the silence of the moment and Syde almost jumped. He peered down at his friend, whose head was inelegantly buried into the ribs under Syde’s left arm. It was somewhere between one or two in the morning, but the pair wanted to finish the campaign in this game before school started again on Monday. Jack had long ago sunk into a horizontal position on the couch, and his eyes looked closed in the dim light of the living room.

“Mmhmm,” was all Syde could think to reply, turning back to the screen in front of him.

Another quiet moment passed, the TV speakers emitting the only sounds in the room. Jack slid even further down the couch, pulling his legs back onto the cushions and turning vertically so his head rest crookedly against Syde’s waist. He still held tight to the game controller, maneuvering his soldier through the battlefield, albeit clumsily. Syde wasn’t sure how much of the TV screen Jack could see anymore, considering the coffee table was in his way.

“Has it always been that fast?” Jack asked.

Syde bit his lip, contemplating his reply.

“My heart rate is faster than most people’s, yeah.”

“Huh,” Jack replied. The pair had reached a checkpoint in their game, and they stopped to stock up on supplies. Wordlessly, they proceeded on to the next level.

The first wave of enemies fell with relative ease. Syde took care of the front line, while Jack picked off any stragglers. It worked well for the two of them, considering Syde’s inability to aim made him more useful as a melee fighter. The real trouble started at the end of wave two, when Jack’s aim was suddenly just as bad as Syde’s. Overwhelmed by enemies, Jack’s armored soldier fell to the ground. A red icon hovered over the virtual man, beckoned Syde’s character for help, but Syde ignored it and opted to pause the game instead.

Jack had fallen asleep, the 14 hour stint at cooperative gameplay defeating him at last. He snored softly as the game controller was tugged gently from his slack hands and placed somewhere out of reach. Syde strained for the remote, stretching a single arm to the coffee table while willing his precariously positioned cargo to stay put. At last his finger hit the power button, plunging the room into complete darkness. The silence that followed seemed so loud to Syde, that he glanced to his friend to check he was still asleep. Thankfully, he was.

With deliberate slowness, Syde relaxed against the sofa and willed the tension away from his shoulders. Leaning his head back, he closed his eyes, and listened to his friend’s steady breathing.
