The Forever Promise: Part 2
Summary: Feels and babies.
Pairing: SyAng
Angela âPrincessâ Jackson (Jennifer Wadl)
Sylina âSyâ (Tate Langdon)
A torch has been passed to me! Well, now Iâm passing it back! TAKE THIS @sybrann!
âItâs OK, Princess,â Edd said softly as he gently patted his nervous friend on the knee.
They were sitting in Eddâs car that was parked in front of a low, near non-descript white building in downtown Peach City. The only reason you knew it was the cityâs free health clinic was because of the large sign painted across the top with two red crosses on each side that said FREE HEALTH CLINIC.
âHow can it be OK, Edd? Weâve never discussed this!â
âYou donât even know for sure, yet. Could be the flu and youâve both been stressed out from work, so your cycle could just be off.â
She shot him a look and he gave her a small smile.
âLetâs just get this over with,â she said as she got out of the car and stepped inside.
A middle aged Asian woman sat at the front desk and nearly gaped at her when she walked up and put her name on the sign in sheet.
âWhat do you need, Ms Jackson?,â she asked with not nary a look at the sign in sheet.
Angela sighed as she saw her near pristine reputation fall apart. Her familyâs work in equal rights for the many communities of color in the area was very well know not just in their area but across the state and around the country. Hell, at the moment her mother was speaking to the State Supreme Court on a case where a group of Mexican migrant workers were suing a farming conglomerate for not paying fair wages, providing a safe work environment and sexual harassment. Her dad was in Oklahoma lobbying to keep companies that wanted to use fracking as their way to mine the land off Native American reservations. A couple of cousins were at the downtown courthouse right now assisting The Innocence Project with the trial of a wrongly accused single mom who had spent 20 years in prison fighting drug charges she said her then dealer boyfriend should have gotten. And it was looking like not only should he had gone to jail, but that police framed her, as well.Â
And her she was, standing in the Peach City Free Health Clinic, facing the worst statistic society could have dreamed up for her.
âI-I n-need a pre-pregnancy test,â she said as another wave of nausea fell over her, and she grabbed the counter to steady herself.
The receptionist sighed and grabbed the paperwork she needed to fill out.
âFill this out and a nurse will be with you shortly, OK?â
âYes. Th-Thank you,â she replied as she swayed back to the seat next to Edd.
They got lucky. The place was empty except for them and the receptionist. She filled out the paperwork, stopping from time to time to breathe so she wouldnât hurl. Why did this place smell so weird? Sheâd volunteered at the clinic plenty of times over the years and it never smelled the way it did now.Â
She was on the last page of her paperwork, when she heard a familiar voice call her name.
âAngela Jackson?â
She froze.
Edd muttered, âOh, no.â
They both looked up to see Marie Kanker standing over them.
Ang promptly threw up all over the clipboard.
When they got her cleaned up and laid down in the exam room, Edd filled out the paper work again for her by asking questions between her dry heaving bouts over the trashcan.
Marie came in the room again with a glass of water and two TUMS tablets.
âTake this and sip the water,â she said as she handed the water and antacids to Ang. âIt should chill your stomach out a bit so we can get you to pee in a cup without keeling over. But the phlebotomist will be down in a minute to do the blood test so we can know for sure.â
âHow soon til we know?,â Edd asked.
â20 minutes.â
Ang sighed and rolled her neck. Sheâd kill for one of Syâs neck massages right about now, but right now, she really wanted to kill Sy.
âFeeling any better?,â Marie asked as Ang had finally sat up as she gingerly munched an antacid.Â
She shrugged.
âLet me take your vitals and weâll go from there, OK?â
Ang nodded.
âHowâd you get on here, Marie?,â Angie asked as Marie took her vitals.
âGot my CNA at the community college. Iâm going to Peach State online, so I can get my RN. I work here in the meantime.â
âOh.â
Marie just giggled. She knew it was hard to believe that one of the toughest girls in school would pick nursing as her career, but here they were. Edd being the nurses assistance when they were in school and patching her up post fights helped. Figuring out how to do basic things herself saved her from his lectures. Except he was now the head of the Pharmacy Department at the hospital. They ran into each other at networking events all the time now. And now the lectures come because of her roller derby injuries.Â
Vitals taken, Ang was handed a cup to go pee in and the phlebotomist was there to take her blood when she got back and after he left, Ang laid down and prayed she could keep the little water she drank down as Edd played in her hair.
In the lab, Marie was pacing.
âYouâre sure?â
âYes, Marie,â Jessica, the lab tech on duty said as she rolled her eyes for the umpteenth time.
With no other lab work needing to be done, it didnât take long to get Angelaâs urine and blood work done. She was healthy as a horse. But she was also pregnant and Marie knew sheâd flip.
Angelaâs dream was to get married, wait a couple of years and then have a kid or two or five. EVERYONE knew this. She may have grown up fighting for equal rights and a womanâs right to choose, but she did want some traditional trappings for herself.Â
But one of her biggest flaws was losing her temper when things didnât go her way. There was a reason she was called Princess, after all.
âOh, God,â Marie said as she ran her hands throw her indigo hair.
âLook, sheâs a big girl. If she can lay down and take it, she can sit up and push it out,â Jessica said as she finished up her lab report and gave Marie the copy sheâd need to give to Ang.
âYouâre a cunt, for that Jess.âÂ
Jessica just shrugged.
Marie rehearsed at least a dozen things she could say to her friend in her head on her way back to Angâs exam room. And all of them fell flat. Steeling her nerves as she came to the door, she plastered a smile on her face as she walked back into the room.
Ang slowly set up and she and Edd looked at Marie with wide questioning eyes.
âYouâre not sick. Youâre just pregnant.â
20 minutes later, Ang is laying on her couch, a cup of chamomile tea steaming on the coffee table. She looks down at her bandaged hand. After Marie told her she was pregnant, she threw a jar of cotton swabs at her as she screamed in rage. But the jar exploded as soon as it hit the floor, and some the flying glass cut up her hand something fierce. Edd insisted that she go home to calm down immediately. His take charge tone cut her rage down some so she sobbed all the way to the car, Marie and Edd having to carry her because she was floored.
This was not supposed to be happening. She was so confused. She was wrapped up in Syâs favorite fleece throw. She felt warm and comforted, but pissed. They had been so careful. Looking her paper work over, she saw that she was at least 14 weeks pregnant. That much explained her sudden inexplicable weight gain. But seriously, how did this happen?!
Edd was in the kitchen finishing up her crockpot dinner.
âOK,â he said as he wiped off his hands on the apron he was wearing when he came into the living room. âDinner should be done in a couple of hours. You need a nap. Iâll stay with you, but I want those eyes closed, now.â
âYes, Papa,â she said as she rolled her eyes, but she did close them. âHow do you two not have kids yet?â
âDo you really want the answer to that?,â Edd asked smugly.
âI hate you.â
âGo to sleep, Angela.â
Hours later, Ang wakes up to Eddâs phone ringing.
âKevin? I can barely hear you! Youâre where? Candyâs? Why?! Oh, she is, is she? Uh huh. Iâm at their house, Dear. I canât talk about that right now. Tell Sy I said hello. And Darlene and Sam, too. Yes, Yes. Iâll meet you at Pho House. Because I want pho, Kevin. Love you, too. Bye.â
Ang checks the clock. 8PM. Sy is usually home by 6.
Edd then turns to see Ang awake, sitting up and her brown eyes flashing a furious fire.
âSheâs at Candyâs?! With that whore Darlene?! And fuck it all if Sam ainât there, too! Iâm going down there!â
But as soon as she stood up, she got dizzy and had to sit back down. Edd was instantly by her side and making sure she was lying down comfortably.
âI know you hate her coworkers, but you cannot go rushing out like that in your condition.â
Ang burst into tears.
âYou donât understand, Edd. Darlene is always flirting with her!â
âSheâs pan, Ang. Itâs a bit of her thing.â
âAnd Sam....â
âIs bi, I know. But your girlfriend is cute and adorable, your words not mine so stop looking at me like that.â
Ang stopped cutting her eyes at him and pouted.
âDidnât you tell me a couple of weeks ago how stressed she was about getting that massive project pushed through?â
âYeah. So?â
âSo sheâs celebrating. Cut her some slack.â
âWhyâs Kevin out?â
Candyâs was a known lesbian bar in the city. For someone as burly as Kevin to be there was odd. In high school, when he and Edd first started dating, he said was bi. Halfway through college he said he was gay. Edd explained to everyone eleventy bajillon times that sexuality was fluid, even if he had known he was gay since he was 14 and would always be gay. Eddy just said Kevin had been scared to admit who he was. Either way, Ang couldnât understand how her best friend was so cool with his boyfriend hanging out at a lesbian bar.
âItâs Friday, Ang. He always takes his guys out for drinks on Fridays. I guess this time they wanted to go to Candyâs.â
Kevinâs motorcycle shop is where a good chunk of Peach Creek and Peach Cityâs motorcycle riders went to get their bikes tuned up and fixed. Half the crew was gay, bi or pan and he was president of the Peach Hill County Rainbow Brigade Riders. He loved to treat his hardworking crew to drinks on Fridays, network and recruit more riders and take Edd out to eat. Even if it was pho for the millionth time.
Knowing this, Ang tossed her head to the back of the couch. She knew that Kevin would never cheat on Edd, just like Sy would never cheat on her. But she couldnât shake the feeling that there were too many people around their people.Â
Ang tossed the blanket off of her legs and somehow made it into the kitchen and not feel sick or dizzy. She put her mug of tea back in the microwave and went to check her alerts. Sy had texted her 6 times, 4 were selfies with Sam and Darlene. And she burst into another batch of noisy, angry tears. When Edd came into the kitchen to check on her, she shot him such an evil glance that Edd left. There was no talking to her when she got like this. Her girlfriend was out celebrating with the second coming of Iman in Darlene Chambers and the president of Peach Creekâs bad boys of Ambercombie and Fitch local chapter 500 in Sam Waterson. And it pissed. her. off.
She hated them both equally. She was all about equality, you know?
10 minutes later, the voice that used to make her heart skip a beat and light a fire in her soul walked in the front door.
âHey, Baby! Iâm home!â
And Syâs favorite coffee mug came flying out of the kitchen at her head. She ducked and went to grab her Louisville Slugger out of the coat closet. She knew she was late, but she had hoped that her texts, and maybe Kevin calling Edd while he was here would have smoothed things over a bit. But apparently not.Â
She walked into The War Zone as casually as possible. For someone who was a state ranked soccer player, Angela could throw small, random objects with the ease that Kevin threw pitches on the mound. So she knew she couldnât let down her guard.
ââSup?â
âWHERE THE FUCK HAVE YOU BEEN ALL NIGHT?!â
Ang was standing on the opposite side of the island, a tea cup in her hand.
âAt Candyâs, Ang. You know that. Care to tell me whatâs got your G-string in a twist?â
The tea cup was tossed with a shriek and Sy smashed it to the far left corner of the room.
âDamnit, why does she have to look so damn good doing that?!,â Ang thought to herself as she threw the tea cupâs saucer at Syâs head and she batted it to the far left corner of the room.
She knew why. Sy played softball in middle school and when she met Kevin and Edd on a double date with Ang not too long after they started dating at the local arcade with batting cages, Kevin insisted she join the Rainbow Brigade's team after kicking his ass in the batting cages. And Sy took to it like riding a bike.Â
Then it hit her. The reason why she was pregnant was because in a fit of happy celebration two and a half months ago, and just to see Syâs glorious baseball pants on the kitchen floor, they came home from a tournament and Sy had her on the island counter. She made her sing and it was a beautiful, beautiful thing.
âIâm pregnant, Sylina.â
She used her given name. Angela wasnât playing around. This was serious. Sy staggered back into the door frame and grabbed her chest.Â
âYouâre wha?,â she whispered.
âPregnant.â
âHow?â
Angela rolled her eyes.Â
âWell,â she began, voice thick with sass, âwhen a man and a woman love each other very much, they have a special handshake...â
âI get it, Princess,â Sy said as she waved her off.
âDO YOU!?,â Ang screamed as she threw the salt and pepper shakers at Syâs head. She hit them both.
âDa fuck, Ang!â
âYou were supposed to be home with me like you always are!â
âBabe, I told you this morning that Iâd be having drinks with the team tonight, whether or not we pushed the project through.â
âThat doesnât explain why youâre out til damn near 9 oâclock on a Friday!â
âI TOLD YOU WHY! And why didnât you call me as soon as you thought something was wrong!?â
âSo this,â Ang asked as she pointed to her slightly swollen belly, âis wrong?!â
If there was anything Sy knew Angela wanted, it was a baby. Sheâd take one as soon as she got it, even if it didnât fit into her current life plans. Just as soon as she got over the initial shock of an unexpected pregnancy, of course. Motherhood was a dream that she had live in and now Sy has told her that there was something wrong with her uterus being occupied by half of both of their DNA.
âOh, God. Angie. Baby. I didnât mean it like that!â
But itâs too late. Princess is crushed. Sy can see the pain shattering in her eyes.Â
âReally?! I guess it does make sense. I mean, only a tranny would think that a perfectly normal, healthy baby would be wrong!,â she screamed as she grabbed a wine glass out of the dish strainer in the islandâs sink and threw it at Sy with all the rage she could muster.
But in her rage, she missed and hit the wall behind a very shocked and equally crushed Sy.Â
Sy felt like she had been hit by a Mac Truck. It was like the very last conversation she had with her dad before she had to walk out of his life for good was repeating itself in her kitchen. He told her that she was a mistake and a scourge on society. There was nothing normal about her or how she wanted to live her life. Angela had always been the one to tell her that she was beautiful and normal just the way she was. But now, the woman she loved more than life itself had tossed the same knife into her soul that society had been dealing out to her since she was 12 years old. But she was 27 now. Her skin was thicker and her spirit tougher and not even Angela Princess Jackson could knock her down.
âWow.â
âWhat?!,â Princess seethed.
Sy pointed her bat at Ang, her blue eyes raging an ice cold fire, but her voice was as steady as ever.
