Starting from the high guard Posta Finestra (window guard), you can easily perform a basic forward cut, transitioning from a high guard into either a mid or low guard. In this case, I’m moving the cut through Posta Breve (literally “short guard”) into Dente di Cinghiaro (boar’s tooth). While it’s more common to start this cut from Posta di Donna (lady’s guard), it works just as well from Posta Finestra.
This is an important cut to master early on, because it requires careful attention to the sword’s center of rotation as you swing it down. If you let the sword pull you too far forward, you’ll “cast” it out, leading to a less controlled blade with no power behind it. Keep it too close to you, and you’ll brute-force the swing downwards, creating an inflexible strike that can be easily countered and quickly tiring you out as you fight against the sword instead of moving with it.
Please ignore fact that I’m trying to do this wearing heals and that’s making it very hard to not just fall over. My footwork is definitely a bit sloppy here.
Let’s talk sword form! This is Posta Finestra, or guard of the window. This guard is a great defensive high guard, and you can also move through it to break a bind if your opponent’s sword is caught on the middle section of yours. Posta Finestra is also great at launching an aggressive sweeping strike to either parry an attack or quickly shift into a middle guard for an attack. (Please excuse my sloppy posture, I’m wearing heals)
