A fic where Senku and the reader switched bodies!
! When the Lightning Fell
Previous ... Next
There are days when the air is heavy with prophecy. When the clouds gather not only water, but tension, as if the sky itself holds its breath. The earth waits beneath it, silent and trembling; not out of fear, but anticipation. The kind that hums beneath skin and bone, the way static hums before a storm. Beautifully.
This was such a day.
The research field stretched like a vast sheet of silver and green, wires strewn across the grass like veins, delicate instruments blinking beneath protective glass domes. A scaffold towered above it all â an experimental relay, the latest in a line of tests Senku Ishigami had been refining for months.
The goal:Â to measure atmospheric electricity and its interaction with neural frequency. High-level science that danced between theory and impossibility.
Senku stood at the base of the structure, wind catching the edge of his lab coat. He held a clipboard in one hand, his other buried in his pocket, lips curled in that usual calculating smirk. The clouds above, thick and bruised with impending thunder, didn't faze him. He welcomed them.
"Perfect timing," he muttered, eyes reflecting the flicker of distant lightning. "Voltage's gonna peak. Let's push it."
A few meters away, his colleague stood with arms crossed, hair swept by the same wind, but her expression was less amused. Where Senku saw perfect conditions, she saw omens.
"You're insane," she said, her voice firm but calm. "The electromagnetic field is already unstable. This setup barely holds under clear skies, and now you want to test it during a storm?"
"That's the point," Senku replied without even glancing at her. "High-resonance neural mapping under natural electric stress. The whole experiment hinges on that variable. Besides..." He finally turned, meeting her eyes with that irritating confidence. "You're here. I wouldn't risk it if I thought it'd kill us."
She narrowed her eyes. "Flattering. But your math doesn't account for chaos."
"No math accounts for chaos," Senku replied, brushing past her to adjust the input terminal. "But it anticipates it. That's the difference between failure and discovery."
She sighed, but she stayed. As always. Maybe it was stubbornness. Maybe it was the strange gravitational pull that came from standing beside a mind like his, a force of nature in a body of bone.
But she was no less of a force herself.
They had argued all morning. Theory versus intuition. Cold logic versus gut instinct. She challenged him not just with facts, but with the inconvenient truth that science alone didnât rule the world; it merely tried to explain it.
And now here they were. The storm overhead crackled like a god preparing to speak.
Senku climbed the scaffolding, nimble and focused, adjusting the copper conductors. Below, his colleague monitored the readings on the portable terminal, eyes flicking through data streams that jittered and stuttered as the air thickened.
Thunder rolled, a low vibration that pressed against the chest like a hand.
"Readings are spiking," she called out. "You need to come down, now."
"Just a secondâ almost thereâ"
"Senku."
He paused. Not because she sounded afraid, but because she didn't. Her voice was sharp and unyielding. Showing him the kind of tone that carved through his certainty and made him wonder if, for once, she might be right.
But it was already too late.
The light changed â first imperceptibly, then all at once. A silvery hue bled into the clouds, a brief flash like the eye of something ancient opening above them. Static surged through the air like a sensation that crawled along skin like insects made of light.
And then it came.
A searing bolt, screaming from sky to earth: a direct strike, impossibly precise, so impossibly loud. Time folded; sound became light; and heat became silence. Consciousness unravelled like a tapestry torn by invisible hands.
And in that moment, something twisted.
Not flesh nor bone, but essence. Something within them shifted, crossed, merged, and diverged. Soon, a scream split the air, though neither would remember whose throat it belonged to.
The world returned slowly, like a film reel restarting with stuttering frames.
Rain began to fall, hesitant at first, then harder, a rhythmic drumming that brought the scent of ozone and damp earth. The storm had passed in its wake, but something remained: a sense of displacement, of threads severed and poorly reattached.
Senku's colleague stirred first.
Her body felt foreign â limbs too light, too long, too... wrong. Fingers twitching, legs struggling to coordinate. But worse was the sensation inside her skull, like her own thoughts were echoing through a cavern she didnât recognise.
She pushed herself up and froze.
Pale fingers. The shape of her hands was larger than she remembered. Her voice, when she gasped, was not hers. It was deeper. Sharper.
"No..."
Across from her, another figure lay sprawled on the grass, unconscious. Familiar clothes. Familiar hair dampened by the rain.
Her body.
The horror hit in waves. She crawled to it â him â herself â and shook the shoulders with trembling hands. "Wake up," she hissedâ "Senku â wake up!"
His eyelids fluttered. Groggily, he sat up, groaning. And then... froze.
His gaze darted to her. Then to his own hands. Then back again.
"What the hell..." His voice caught in his throat. Thin, and airy, unmistakably hers.
She staggered back. "It happened," she said. "It really happened."
"No," Senku said, but he was already reaching for the portable terminal, fingers fumbling awkwardly through code commands, mind moving faster than his borrowed body could follow. "No, no, no â this isn't possibleâ"
She knelt beside him, grabbing his arm. "Senkuâ stop."
His breath was ragged, his movements erratic. He couldn't stop looking at her â his body, his face, distorted by panic.
"This isâ neurological dissonance. Temporary. Must be," he muttered. "Memory displacement. Haptic hallucination. Thereâs no scientific model where identity transferâ"
"There is now," y/n interrupted quietly. "Because it happened."
The silence that followed was unbearable. Thunder rumbled again in the distance, softer now. A reminder. A whisper.
Senku's face â her face â tilted toward the sky. And something shifted in his eyes. Not just fear or confusion, but wonder.
Wonder...
"Huh," he said finally, voice strangely calm. "Guess you were right about chaos."
She looked down at her â his â hands. "Yeah," she murmured. "But it looks like you're stuck with it."
The walk back to the facility was a silent one, broken only by the crunch of gravel beneath mismatched shoes and the slow dripping of rain from tangled leaves. The storm had passed, but its echo lingered in the sky. Thunder murmurs like distant voices arguing behind the clouds.
Senku, trapped in y/n's frame, walked with stiff precision, his gait subtly off. Too cautious, and maybe too calculated, too. His borrowed body moved differently than his own as his hips swayed slightly, his centre of gravity shifted forward, posture was more fluid than rigid.
y/n, wearing Senku's tall, lean form, moved with equally awkward grace. His longer legs carried her farther with each step, but his body was a vessel of constraint. Everything about him was efficient, but not built for ease. His shoulders resisted the way she carried tension. Even blinking felt alien â his eyes are way too sharp, keener, too attuned to light.
Neither said much until they reached the lab.
Senku reached for the door first, hesitated, then stepped aside. "After you," he said dryly, but not unkindly.
She paused. "Really?"
"It's still your soul in my body. Might as well respect the formality."
She raised an eyebrow, then stepped inside. The familiar scent of ozone and solder greeted her â electrical insulation, old books, faint notes of mineral oil. It felt like stepping into a cathedral dedicated to reason, except she now wore the robes of the high priest.
Senku shut the door behind them with a quiet thud, then immediately crossed the room, fingers flying over a terminal. "I need to scan our neurophysiological vitals. Something's got to give me a baseline. If we can isolate the inversion patternâ"
"Senku."
He paused.
She leaned against the counter, arms crossed in a way that didn't suit his body but felt instinctive. "It's been half an hour. Don't you think we should... I don't know... go home?"
Senku turned slowly. "Home?"
"Yeah. Your home, and mine." She gestured between them. "Which means...you're going to have to go to my apartment. And I have to go to yours."
Senku blinked. "Absolutely not."
"Well, we can't just sleep here."
"Why not?" he snapped, a little too fast. "It's a controlled environment. I've got all the tools I need here, and it's not like I'm planning to stay in your body long enough to need pyjamas."
Her eyes narrowed. "You really think you'll reverse this overnight?"
"I intend to."
"Well, I don't." She sighed and stood straighter. "Look, I get it. You're trying to rationalise this like it's some solvable equation, but even if it is, you're not going to fix it by refusing to breathe fresh air or pretending reality isn't inconvenient."
Senku glared, then looked away, jaw tight.
She softened. "Besides... there are people expecting us. Your father, my roommate, our colleagues. They'll notice something's off."
"...Right," he muttered, rubbing the bridge of his nose in a gesture that looked alien on her face. "Social variables. Damn it."
There was a pause. A long and heavy one.
"Alright," Senku said finally. "Let's just swap keys and keep conversation to a minimum."
She gave him a look. "Yeah, that'll go great when my roommate asks why I'm acting like an emotionally constipated android."
"And my dad will love it when you start offering emotional insights during dinner. 'He's being so expressive lately,' he'll say. 'How wonderful!'" His voice went high and mocking.
She smirked. "Guess we'll both be playing pretend."
They exchanged bags awkwardly: Senku gritting his teeth as he fumbled through her belongings, y/n grimacing as she rifled through his gadgets and layered notebooks. Their lives had always run parallel, but never intertwined this intimately. Not until now.
"You have way too many tools," she muttered.
"You have way too many lip balms," he replied flatly.
"Some of us care about hydration."
"And some of us care about solving the mysteries of the universe."
"And some of us care about not having cracked lips while solving them."
Senku rolled his â her â eyes. "Whatever. Let's just survive the night without getting each other arrested."
She gave him a sardonic salute. "Good luck, genius."
"You'll need it more than I will."
Outside, the world was soaked and glimmering. Wet streets reflect the haze of streetlights like liquid gold. As they went their separate ways, each with the other's burdens, each wearing a mask they did not choose, the city held its breath.
The storm had passed, but the true thunder had only just begun.

In a world untouched by petrification, Senku Ishigami is a prodigy in the realm of experimental physics, leading cutting-edge research into electromagnetic resonance and cognitive mapping. y/n, a fiercely intelligent yet intuitively driven counterpart, often challenges his methods, working as a collaborator or rival depending on the day. Sometimes even an owl, an observer.
During a routine field experiment under volatile atmospheric conditions, a lightning strike hits the observation site. Both are rendered unconscious yet miraculously survive.
But survival comes with a price.
When they awaken, something is deeply, horrifyingly wrong: they have swapped bodies. What begins as chaos spirals into deeper confusion, identity crisis, and a struggle for equilibrium.
As Senku frantically searches for a scientific cause and cure â y/n navigates the burden of his intellectual legacy. Through misunderstandings, emotional tension, and reluctant cooperation, the two begin to see the world through each other's eyes in ways they never expected.
Yet beneath it all, the question lingers â was this really an accident of natureâŚ?
Or is something far greater at play?
