"Alec, you canât go see Vati right now," he repeated. Alec squirmed in his arms but finally gave up.
"Papa, what happened?" The little boy asked. Jean-Paul had run out of tears, out of anger and pain and all he felt was hollow, like someone had sliced him open and pulled everything out of him, leaving heavy bones and atrophied muscle. "Papa?"
"Itâs my fault. Donât worry." He croaked. "When Vati gets betterâ" he paused, "âWhen Vati gets better, itâll be just you and him, and the babies, okay? Papa has toâto go back to Canada alone for a while." It would be better that way, anyway. He was a shitty dad. He was a shitty husband and a shitty super hero and a shitty friend. Shitty. He didnât even know what had happened. He swore it had been Kurt that had grabbed him up at the party, but he guessed now he was so dangerously sobered up, and everything was so fuzzy nowâŚ
RenĂŠ squirmed in his carrier, and Jean-apaul bent to pick him up. Heâd been in such a hurry, heâd left the diaper bag at home, but he was thankful that at least no one from the school hated him enough yet to refuse to get it. Yet. He hadnât spoke to any of them in the near hour they had been there. You never deserved Kurt, or these children. You donât deserve the people you call your friends and you certainly donât deserve your fame and fortune. Godâs going to punish you for being such a sorry excuse for a mutant. Jean-Paul mentally berated himself as he gave RenĂŠ his bottle. They were such beautiful babies⌠He wished any other person on earth was their Papa. Those poor things.
He fell asleep against the wall, having long given up his chair to someone else, Alec curled against his chest and one hand on each of the twinsâ carriers. He didnât sleep well, or much, but he supposed, when he had just inadvertently killed Kurt, it was to be expected. When the others found out what he had done, he would be more hated than anyone else. More hated than Senator Kelly and all Magnetoâs crew combined.
His mouth tasted like blood, and he realized he had bit his lip hard enough to break the skin. And Jean-Paul cuddled Alec tight, face buried in black and silver curls. âThis is my fault,â he whimpered. âThis is all my faultâŚâ
It was hours before the doctors came out to say the news, he was alive but the only thing the knew for sure was their was some brain activity and his heart was beating on his own. The rest they had to wait till the swelling went down before knowing for sure if he was even going to make it through the night. But the elf clung, not because of anger but because of love. He wanted to know what had happened, why Jean-Paul had kissed another. The anger he felt that night was just the normal kind he felt towards his husband when he was being a self loathing asshole. Kurt adored the man, adored their family and children but at times the others bullshit baffled him to the point he just had to take a walk or cook. One moment he was being told he was loved the next how Jean-Paul hated himself, was worthless and didn't deserve to even live.
Kurt was worried about his children, Jean-Paul had been stable once and now Kurt was trying to figure out what went wrong, what could be done to fix the mess of his life. Clearly he needed more then the normal soft encouraging words since Kurt figured Jean-Pauls own problems had rubbed off on Alec and that was the reason the boy had an irrational fear of cats. So he fought to stay alive, for unanswered questions and for a love he thought he had but might have lost simply because Jean-Paul did not seem to care about anyone but himself and sometimes the children.
