"Meet me in our room after dinner, kay? It's really important." You had told him before squeezing his hand and heading over to sit with a few of the nurses.
The two of you sitting at separate tables during meal times wasn't totally out of the usual. Though the giggles that had broke out when you joined and the not so subtle glances in his direction was a bit odd. Ace shrugged it off as he got his own dinner and joined a table of his own. Your request floated around his mind as he tried to come up with what was so important. He knew better than to assume it was anything about your relationship. You guys have been going strong for a few months and he felt like he had nothing to worry about.
……
Or did he?
What if you had lost feelings for him? What if you were in love with someone else? What if you had decided that he was nothing more than the demon son of the late pirate king? His thoughts had began to spiral as he picked at his food for the rest of dinner. Anxiety had set in and he couldn't bring himself to finish eating, which had earned some confused looks from his table mates.
By the time he left the galley, you were no longer where he'd seen you last. The anxious feeling didn't dissipate as he neared your shared room, which he assumed you were already in. When he found himself in front of the closed door, he let out an exhale and pulled his shoulders back. Surely he was just overthinking and letting his negative thoughts get the best of him. He knew you wouldn't do something like that to him. He hoped.
Without much more thought, he entered the room.
Sure enough, there you were fiddling with something on the dresser. At the sound of the door opening, you spun around to face him with a smile. "There you are! I was beginning to think you fell asleep in your food again."
Ace chuckled as he shut the door behind him. "Now you know that I wouldn't keep a pretty girl waiting for too long. So what was so important?"
A faint blush dusted your cheeks as you rolled your eyes and crossed the room towards him. "It just so happens that I have an experiment that I want to try on you. You up for it, handsome?" You looked up at him with that twinkle in your eyes that he couldn't possibly say no to.
"Depends…what kind of experiment are we talking about? Like science or," You had reached out to grab his hands and he took that opportunity to pull you flush against him. He leaned down to whisper in your ear. "physical~"
You gasped as your faint blush turned into a hot flush as you pushed away from him. "Ace! Get your mind out of the gutter.
When you pulled away enough to see his face, you were met with a wolfish grin. "I can't help it. My minds always in the gutter when you're around."
"Down boy." You pat his chest as he released you. "Anyways, I can't tell you about the experiment. You're just going to have to trust me and do what I tell you to do."
"Sounds easy enough, I trust you. You have me at your complete mercy." Ace winked.
You rolled your eyes again but the faint smirk on your face gave you away. "Alright, first order of business. I need you to close your eyes."
"Consider it done." He did as told and closed both of his eyes.
"Now, I'm gonna move you forward a few steps and I'll also be moving your arms. I'll need you to keep your arms in whatever position I put them in until I say otherwise. Sound okay?"
"Baby, you know I'll do whatever position you want." He teased and was met with a smack to the arm. You didn't verbally respond but he could feel your hands wrap around his wrists.
You guided him until he was in a spot you were satisfied with. Releasing his wrists, your hands trailed up his arms and lifted them both until they were spread apart. "Remember what I said, do not move those arms until I tell you otherwise."
"Yes, ma'am."
Taking a step back, you eyed his stance and it took everything in you not to laugh. Turning your head to the dresser, you faced the hidden cam-snail. What was an experiment without evidence? You shot the snail a thumbs up before turning back towards your boyfriend.
This "experiment" was actually the product of a girl's night. Some trend was going around the nurses where they would see if their partners would melt into a kiss unprompted. It was a cute idea and you were excited to see what Ace would do.
You reached up and put both hands on either side of his face. Instantly, he leaned into your touch as your thumb stroked his cheek. He started to open his mouth, surely some flirtatious remark on the tip of his tongue. Before he could utter a word, you brought his face down to meet yours as you cut him off with a kiss.
It took him a moment to realize that you were kissing him. So it was a physical experiment. To think he was so worried over nothing, you just wanted an excuse to kiss him. Well, who would he be to deny you that? Instructions be damned, you deserved his full attention. Without further thought, his arms fell from their set position and his hands found your hips as he deepened the kiss.
You were not surprised at all. In fact, you would have been shocked if he actually listened to you. Your arms moved to wrap around his neck and you toyed with the hair at the nape of his neck. His grip on your hips tightened for just a second and then he relaxed his grip as one arm moved to wrap around your waist.
It didn't matter how many times the two of you kissed, he always managed to take your breath away and make your heart flutter.
The next few minutes were filled with wandering hands and burning cheeks. Only the need to breathe put a stop to Ace's attempts to devour your lips. When you regretfully pulled away from him, you couldn't help but smile at his attempt to follow your lips. "Slow down, I'm not going anywhere."
"Hmm I know, but I like kissing you." One of his hands lifted to rest on your cheek while bringing you in for another peck. "Your lips are like really addictive y'know. They're just so soft and they fit against mine so nicely." Every other word was met with another peck.
A giggle escaped you as you put a hand over his mouth. "Ace! Give me a second to breathe."
He shook his head as he smirked against your hand. While you were focused on his mouth, you didn't pay attention to the rest of him. Well not until you felt a squeeze to your ass. You let out a gasp and dropped your hand. "Okay, you had a second."
Any retort you had was cut off has he pulled you in for another kiss. And another one. And another. And as your back hit the bed, you faintly remembered that the cam-snail was still on.
a/n: bear with me, writing any form of physical intimacy is bit hard for me so this was more of a practice fic but i also thought this trend was cute when it was going around TikTok. remember, likes/comments/reblogs are super appreciated

Dishware clanked as you washed the dishes from today. Granny sat at the dining table nursing a cup of tea. You could tell something was on her mind as you turned the water off. "I can tell when you have something to say. You wanna fill me in on whats going on in that head of yours?" You threw a glance over your shoulder to see her looking out the window.
She sighed as she glanced down at her cup. "You know I appreciate your help around here, dear. It's just…you're either here or working and you should be going out and having fun with friends at your age."
You stopped drying a plate and sat it gently on the drying rack to turn towards her. "Granny, we've been through this before. I'm perfectly happy staying here and taking care of you. You know, I don't have many friends around here and besides….you're the only friend I've ever needed." You spoke softly as you joined her at the table.
A sad smile graced her lips as she grabbed your hand and squeezed. "That's the thing, honey. I can't be the only person in your life when I won't be around much longer. I don't want you to be all alone when I go."
"You're right. I know you're right but…" You closed your eyes as you exhaled. "I'll be alright, I always am. I'd rather spend as much time with you before the inevitable happens. There's no way I could live with myself if I was out partying and something happened to you. I have no regrets."
"I suppose there's no convincing you otherwise." She pat your hand before releasing it. "Now, go finish drying the dishes and I'll go bring out Scrabble."
With a nod, you resumed your previous task. You couldn't help but dwell on her words though. With work and taking care of her, you'd barely made time for yourself. When the time came where she was no longer around, you weren't sure what you would do.
When you woke up the next morning, the first thing you became aware of was that you were awfully warm. You nuzzled back into your pillow, refusing to fully wake up just yet. The second and third things you became aware of was the weight around your waist and that your pillow wasn’t actually a pillow.
Finally blinking away the remnants of sleep, you found yourself nestled into Ace's side. He was still snoozing away, but one arm was wrapped snugly around you. Your cheeks warmed as you realized that the both of you must have instinctively cuddled up sometime in the night. It certainly wasn't the worst way to wake up. And if it wasn't for your full bladder then you probably would have been content to fall back asleep.
Not wanting to wake him, you tried to pry his arm off you gently, but his grip was unrelenting. With a huff, you pulled at his stupidly beefy arm and tried to squeeze your way out only for him to grumble and roll over with you in tow. Your eyebrow twitched as you realized that you were the equivalent of a stuffed animal in the arms of a clingy child. Screw letting him sleep in, you had to go to the bathroom. You pulled at his cheek. "Ace if you don't let me go then I am going to piss myself……and by default, I'm going to pee on you too."
At the feeling of a tugging sensation on his face, Ace's eyes fluttered open. He let out a yawn as he blinked away the remaining fog of sleep. His brows furrowed as he looked at you and faintly recalled what he heard when waking up. "Did- Did you say you were gonna pee on me? I'm not into that stuff."
Your face probably could rival his flames in terms of heat. Spluttering, you slapped at his arm. "I'm not- I just have to go to the bathroom and you wouldn't let me go, you freaking beefcake."
Realizing that he did in fact have an arm wrapped around you, he blushed quickly and pulled away from you. "Oh, well this isn't embarrassing at all. I'm so sorry."
A sigh of relief left you as you were finally able to get up. Before you left the room, you looked over your shoulder. "I mean, for all intents and purposes…..it really wasn't the worst way to wake up." With that, you shut the door behind you as you finally made your way towards a bathroom.
Meanwhile, Ace pulled a pillow over his face and let out a muffled yell. Sometimes you knew just what to say to turn his usually charismatic self into a flustered mess. It wasn't enough for him to wake up literally clinging onto you. No, you had to go and tell him that 'It wasn't the worst way to wake up.' Did that mean that you liked waking up with him?!
Sitting up, he let his pillow fall into his lap as he rubbed his reddened face. No, no. He was not gonna go down that train of thought. This was most certainly going to be a one time thing. Ace dragged himself out of bed to pull on some fresh clothes, just another set of black cargo shorts with a shirt that he left unbuttoned. Then, he slipped on his boots and plopped his hat onto his head.
His thoughts drifted back to you and how you'd also probably like some fresh clothes. So he raided his dresser for items that he'd think would fit you. There wasn't much, but it'd have to do until they stopped on an island. As he was laying clothes on the bed, you finally returned.
"Okay, I did not get as lost as I thought I would. I ran into the most beautiful man who pointed me in the right direction. Oh! By the way-wait, you're actually wearing a shirt?" You quirked an eyebrow as you eyed his attire.
"Uh…yeah?"
"I did not know you owned any shirts….huh, I guess you learn something new everyday."
Ace huffed as he put his hands on his hips. "Of course, I own shirts. Is it really that much of a surprise? Also, you're literally wearing one of mine right now"
Your mouth opened to retort before you reluctantly nodded. "Fair point. Still, you're like notorious for being shirtless like ninety percent of the time."
He only shrugged in response. "What can I say, it's a preference. Plus, it let's me show off Pop's mark on my back."
Moving past the subject of his shirtlessness, you looked over the clothes he laid out. You picked whatever you thought would fit you best and turned toward Ace expectantly. His brows furrowed. "What? Do you need me to find you something else?"
Shaking your head, you pointed at the door. "No, I need you to get out so I can change."
"Oh….I could just turn around-"
"Out!"
"Fine, fine! I'll be just outside." He threw his hands up as he made is way out of the room so you could change in peace.
After a few minutes, you exited his room in the new clothes. "I meant to ask if you had an extra toothbrush so I could brush my teeth."
"A toothbrush?"
You deadpanned. "Yes, a toothbrush. Don't tell me you don't have those here."
"I mean, yeah, but don't forget you're on a pirate ship. We aren't exactly known for excellent hygiene. Though, Marco or the nurses probably know where some are."
"Ace……when was the last time you brushed your teeth?"
He sheepishly rubbed the back of his neck. "Uh like a few days ago I guess. Sometimes I forget."
"Well, we're gonna change that. It's a miracle that you have nice teeth. C'mon let's go find Marco." You sighed as you grabbed his arm to pull him toward the deck.
'They think I have nice teeth' Ace thought to himself as he allowed himself to be pulled.
You were lucky enough to run into a few nurses who were more than happy to help. Ace stood sheepishly to the side as you all discussed the dental hygiene on the ship. And yes, you did end up dragging Ace back to the bathroom to brush his teeth. After that whole debacle, your stomach let out a growl.
Taking the hint, Ace led you back to the mess hall. "Will you be okay eating in here? I know you were a bit…overwhelmed, yesterday." He held the door open as you stood in the entryway.
From where you were, you didn't see any sign of Teach so you gave him a nod. "Yeah, I'll be okay this time. I can't exactly hide away forever."
"That's the spirit! Now, lets grab a plate and join that table. I'll introduce you." He pointed towards a table towards the middle that a few men were sitting at. One had blue hair and a mask over his eyes while the other seemingly had a mask of a skull. Laying at the end of the table, was a giant lynx. Somehow they were familiar to you, but you couldn't recall any names.
Once you both had full plates, you followed Ace to the table he had pointed at. He had an easy smile as he greeted the occupants. The lynx raised his head and headbutt the hand that Ace offered. You had a timid smile as Ace introduced you first.
"As for these guys, they used to part of my crew. I did tell you about how I used to be a captain of my own crew, right? Anyways, this is Deuce and Skull , former officers of the Spade pirates." They both greeted you with nods. Both of them shared a look as Deuce's lip twitched.
"So, uh, you wouldn't happen to be the reason why Ace has been so scatterbrained lately, would you? I mean it's a little weird how you only just got here and yet he's totally whipped- OW!" Deuce was interrupted by Ace, who had kicked him under the table while still retaining his smile. Even if it seemed more threatening than before.
"And last but not least, the furball is Kotatsu. I rescued him from a poaching trap and now he's a pampered ship-cat." The lynx licked his paw in response. You fought the urge to reach over and pet him, you had such a soft spot for animals.
Skull tilted his head as he observed you. Everyone had heard about the mysterious person who had shown up, seemingly out of thin air, the other night. Though looking at you now, Skull instantly noticed a few things. One, you looked more like a civilian than a pirate. Two, your eyes would constantly flicker around the room. And finally, how those were definitely Ace's clothes that you were wearing and the two of you were sitting awfully close without even realizing it.
"If you don't mind me asking, what exactly brings you to the Moby Dick? I mean, no offense and all, but you don't seem like a pirate to me." Skull asked curiously.
You thought to yourself for a moment and glanced over at Ace, who gave a small shrug. "Oh, well that'd be because I'm not a pirate." You chose to ignore the muttered 'Not yet' from Ace and continued. "Whitebeard knew my grandmother and is helping me out by letting my stay aboard for a few weeks. So any pointers for surviving a month at sea among the crew of an Emperor would be greatly appreciated."
The rest of breakfast was spent listening to Skull indulge you with his pirate knowledge. Deuce would chime in every so often, as would Ace. However, Deuce was much more interested in how effortlessly you captured the attention of his former captain. You weren't even talking to him and yet he was hanging off your every word. The blue haired man took a sip of his drink and smirked. Yeah, Ace was so whipped.
After breakfast, Ace had asked you about any strengths that you thought could prove useful during your time here. For a second, you had drawn a blank. You lacked any skills that could make you a decent pirate. You didn't know how to fight, you didn't know how to read a map and you didn't know a thing about how to upkeep a pirate ship. What skills you did have were: limited medical knowledge, basic cooking knowledge, and your knowledge of future events. That's really all you had going for you at the moment.
He wasn't really surprised, but you needed to start somewhere and no matter how much Ace wished he could stay by your side for the entire month, he had his own responsibilities. So, that's how to both of you found yourselves in the kitchen sometime after lunch.
The second that the both you entered the kitchen, a chorus of displeased cooks made it known that Ace was not welcome in here. He spluttered as you quirked an eyebrow at him. Ace looked between you and them before he held both of his hands up in defense. "I'm not going to touch anything, we're just looking for Thatch."
"I'm over here!" A voice called out from the other side of the kitchen.
Ignoring the side-eyes, Ace ushered you over to the 4th Division commander. Thatch looked up from the pot that he was stirring. His eyes squinted at Ace. "Didn't I ban you from the kitchen?"
Ace shrugged. "Maybe, maybe not. Anyways, my friend here is trying to find something they can do to help around here and we were hoping they could shadow you for a few days?"
Thatch eyed you and then picked up a tasting spoon and held it out for you. "If they can tell me what this soup needs."
You took the spoon and stepped up to his side to taste the soup. 'Oh my god this is so good.' You thought as the taste of Broccoli Cheddar Soup stayed on your tongue. Thinking for a second, you nodded and looked at Thatch. "I'd add some finely chopped carrots and maybe just a bit more pepper."
It must have been the right thing to say as Thatch hummed in approval. "Alright, they can stay. But you cannot. Out of my kitchen, Portgas." He pointed to the door.
Ace's mouth dropped. "You're so mean to me. Can't I at least try the soup before I go." His hand reached out to grab another spoon before you lightly smacked his hand away with your own spoon.
"You heard the man. Out!" You couldn't conceal the grin at his look of betrayal.
"Is that like your favorite word today- wait don't point it at me, I'm going." He held his hands up in mock surrender as he took a few steps back. "And just remember who you're sharing a room with this month."
Your cheeks burned as you watched him exit the kitchen. Looking back at Thatch, he raised an eyebrow. "You're staying in his room?"
"It's not like that! Can you just show me around the kitchen please."
"Of course……so are you guys sharing a bed?"
Over the next couple of days you settled into a bit of a routine. You'd wake up on your side of the bed - which a pillow barrier had been agreed upon due to Ace's tendency to cuddle- and Ace would share some clothes with you. Then, breakfast together in the mess hall -which during meal times, you would make sure to sit far from Teach- and then you would part ways with Ace to shadow Thatch until dinner. So far, you've decided that Thatch is probably your favorite person on this ship. Sorry Ace. Not only was he a fantastic cook but he was also fun to be around.
Most of the time.
It just so happened that Thatch loved to tease. He especially loved to tease you about Ace; you had repeatedly told him that you guys were just friends but that didn't deter him one bit. In fact, it only encouraged him.
Right now, you were whisking batter for dessert. Thatch was peering over your shoulder and nodding to himself. "You know, you're pretty good at whisking. Especially whisking Ace off his feet. I think he talks about you just as much as he does his little brother."
You groaned as you turned to face him, a faint blush gathered on your cheeks. "Did you seriously put me on whisking duty just to make that pun. Nobody whisked anyone off their feet."
"Hm. The crew seems to think differently, my friend." Thatch smirked as he moved past you. Not before uttering that he did in fact put you on whisking duty for the sole purpose of that pun with you rolling your eyes in response.
Honestly, you can't really blame them for thinking along those lines. To everyone else, you've been here less than a week and you were already sharing a bed with the second division commander. To you, you've known Ace for weeks now and felt entirely comfortable around him. He was the closest friend you've had in years.
Your whisking slowed as your thoughts traced back to your world. It had been almost a week since you stepped through the mirror. You wondered if anyone noticed your absence. Work definitely would notice and you were certain that you'd no longer be employed by the time you got back. Any friends you still had had been neglected since your grandmothers health deteriorated and after her passing. The same thoughts had been floating in your mind for the past few days. But you had to go back eventually…didn't you?
A boisterous laugh brought you back to the present and your shoulders tensed as you realized who had entered the kitchen. Sure enough, clapping Thatch on the shoulder was none other than the pirate you've been avoiding, Marshall D. Teach. Taking a deep breath, you resumed your whisking and tried to keep out of his line of sight.
Too bad that you have pretty rotten luck.
"Well, I don't believe we've been properly introduced, Greenhorn."
Your eyes slid up to the man who came up behind you. The way he practically loomed over you sent a chill down your spine. Why was everyone in this world obscenely tall anyways? You hid your disdain behind a polite smile. "No, no we haven't." You made no move to introduce yourself though.
"Zehahaha! No need to be so shy. I don't bite." He winked and you had to stop yourself from grimacing in response. "I'll go first; The names Teach. Your turn."
You reluctantly told him your name and hoped that he'd leave you alone. He did not. Instead, he kept talking.
"You know, I have been a bit curious-"
The call of your name has never sounded so wonderful. Peeking his head through the open door was Ace, who smiled when he caught your attention. Though, his eyes narrowed at your uncomfortable body language and how your shoulders sagged in relief when you saw him. You didn't even excuse yourself as you put down your bowl and rushed over to your savior.
"Thatch, I'll be back in a few!" You called over your shoulder.
Thatch had also been watching the interaction with curious eyes. Upon seeing you heading off with Ace, a teasing smirk stretched across his face. "Make good decisions! Wrap it before you tap it!" His only response was being flicked off simultaneously as you both disappeared through the doorway.
Watching the scene before him, Teach internally scowled. His initial thoughts on you remained the same. You were very odd….and maybe a bit rude. From what he's noticed over that past few days, it was apparent that you were avoiding him and only him. There was definitely something strange about you.
When you had entered the hallway, you grabbed Ace's arm to lead him out onto the deck. Once outside, you let go of his arm. He said nothing and only watched you questioningly as you rolled your shoulders.
"So, what did you need me for?" You asked after a beat of silence.
"Huh?…Oh! Some of the other commanders are here and I wanted to introduce you. Is that alright with you?" He trailed off.
Enthusiastically, you nodded. "I would love to meet some more new faces. I was needing a break from the kitchen anyways."
"About that," Ace glanced back where you two had came from and back to you. "Were you okay back there? You looked pretty tense when Teach was talking with you. Did he say something?"
"Oh that? It was nothing. I just get a weird vibe around Teach is all." You waved off his concerns.
Ace tilted his head slightly as he observed you. He let out a hum before he shrugged. "If you say so, but if he does say or do anything just let me know, okay?"
"I will. Now, who am I meeting?"
In your head, you just assumed that the whole crew lived on the Moby Dick. The ship was massive enough so surely the whole crew could fit. Actually being on the ship though, you suppose it would be a bit cramped with over a thousand men. You mentally shivered at the thought of what the crews quarters would look like.
The reality was that The Moby Dick was the main ship with Whitebeard and four Commanders. Marco and Thatch were the only commanders who weren't in a rotation. Ace and Izou were the other two currently on board. You'd met the 16th division commander earlier in the week when he helped you find your way to the bathroom. He had raised an eyebrow at your disheveled morning hair and that you were wearing Ace's clothes before promptly pointing you in the right direction.
There were also four slightly smaller ships which had been dubbed "the Mini Mobys'". Each ship held three commanders along with their divisions. One of the Mini Mobys' would sail alongside the Moby Dick for a month or two before it would switch out with another one. Special occasions would call for all of the ships and commanders to be reunited. Honestly, all of this information only made you want to ask questions.
But questions could wait.
Ace was currently waving at a man wearing a ruffed outfit who appeared in similar height to you guys, if not slightly taller. Finally, someone who didn't tower over you. He also appeared to be a bit younger than you expected. Of course, in this world, nothing is ever as it seems. He enthusiastically matched Ace's wave and bounded over.
"Heya, Ace!"
"Haruta! I have someone I want you to meet." Ace introduced you to who you now know as Haruta. Your friend slung an arm over your shoulder and brought you in close. Your cheeks heated up at the close proximity as you gave a small wave.
"Ah, Ace's friend. I've heard about you, it's nice to put a face to the name. I'm Haruta, Commander of the Twelfth Division." Oh no, not another person who was going to tease you. Whatever happened to platonic relationships. Haruta held a fist out.
"Only good things I hope. It's nice to meet you." Not to leave him hanging, you gave him a fist bump.
"Oh yeah, Thatch told me-Oomph!" The warmth beside you vanished as Ace sprang forward to stop the rest of Haruta's sentence. You raised an eyebrow as Ace turned his head towards you from where he was covering the other commanders mouth.
"You know, I still wanna introduce you to Vista and Jozu so we're gonna have to cut this short. Plus, Haruta's probably got a lot of stuff to do. Right?" Turning back to Haruta with a pointed glance, Ace removed his hand.
Haruta had a teasing grin waiting in response. "Yeah, I'm absolutely swamped. I'll catch you guys at dinner though."
With a pat to Ace's shoulder, Haruta wandered off. You kinda wanted to know what else he was gonna say. It didn't occur to you that your appearance was a big enough deal to warrant gossip between commanders. Ace's cutting him off also left you confused. What could Thatch have possibly said to warrant that reaction?
"What was that about?" You prodded as you both walked side by side.
"What was what about?" Was Ace's response as he searched around the crowded deck. Oh so he was going to play dumb.
"So we're ignoring that you practically pounced on Haruta to shut him up? Not suspicious at all, by the way." You pointed out.
"I have no idea what you're talking about. Ah! There they are, come on." Reaching down, Ace grabbed your hand and lead you to a group of men.
Compared to everyone on this ship, you were minuscule. Two of the men, you faintly recognized as other division commanders. One was about double your height with a curly black mustache and also smelled like roses. He also had two swords sheathed upon his back. The other man was at least triple your height with a long face and oddly patterned facial hair. Vista the Flower Blade and Diamond Jozu, you recalled.
Vista was the one to spot Ace first. "Ah, there's our local spitfire." He called out while a trace of a smile appeared on Jozu's face.
Ace beamed. "Vista, Jozu! It's been a few weeks! I actually wanted you to meet someone." He gestured towards you.
You gave a slight wave and introduced yourself. "It's an honor to meet you both, I've heard a little bit about you guys."
"Oh, we've heard about you as well. I take it that you've gathered that Thatch loves to gossip?" Vista subtly glanced from you to Ace then back to you.
"And that he loves to mettle in other peoples business? Yeah, he's worse than a teenager." You grinned, happy to poke fun at Thatch for once.
Jozu shook his head in mock disappointment. "He is too nosy for his own good."
"Tell me about it. It's like his pompadour is full of secrets." That one got a round of laughs from the group.
Ace nudged you. "Good one."
"I like you, you'll fit in just fine with us." Vista smiled and pat you on your shoulder, which you're ashamed to admit that it made you stumble just a bit.
Any further conversation was cut off by the sound of an alarm. You flinched at the loud noise as everyone around you seemed to know exactly what to do and jumped into action. A hand rested on your shoulder and from the warmth, you could tell it was Ace's.
A curse left Vista as the swordsman turned toward Jozu. "Those stubborn marines must have followed us from that last island."
"Wait, so is that like an enemy alarm?" You questioned, turning to Ace.
He nodded. "Yeah we have a few different alarms. It lets everyone know which position they're needed at. There's one for marines, other pirate crews, storm warnings, etc. There's even one for a man overboard, which may or may not be because of me."
"None of you look very concerned." You gestured to the commanders. If no one else was going to panic, then you certainly weren't going to. Even if alarms of any kind made you a bit anxious.
They all looked at each other and shrugged. Jozu was the one to speak. "Marines are pretty much canon fodder. Light work for a crew like ours, unless it's an admiral."
Ace squeezed your shoulder. "You, my friend, get to finally see us in action."
"And what am I supposed to do?"
"Stay here and watch me-us decimate this fleet. It'll take like ten minutes." He smirked as he stepped away from you and tipped his hat, ignoring his slip up.
Vista laughed. "Ten? I could take them out in five minutes."
"Okay, you're on-" Ace was interrupted as Haurta rushed past with his hand on his sword sheath.
"Sorry guys! I'll take them all out by the time you guys get there!" He cackled. That prompted both Vista and Ace to look at each other before racing after the brunet, leaving you behind with Jozu.
"Is this normal?" You looked up the giant of a man.
"Pretty much. Competitions and bet pools are also pretty popular around here." The third division commander crossed his arms.
"Interesting….hey can I make bet?"

You had quickly excused yourself from the table and all but rushed out of the room. Thatch raised an eyebrow and turned to Ace. “Well that was odd.”
Ace absently nodded. “Yeah….I’m gonna go see what that's about and make sure they don’t get lost.” He made his way to the door before quickly turning around to point a finger at Thatch. “Don’t do anything to my food!”
Grasping his chest, Thatch had an innocent look on his face. “Ace, we take food very seriously on this ship, I can’t believe you’d accuse me-”
“You literally put blue food dye in my food and it turned my mouth blue for a WEEK!”
“That was one time.”
“And the time it was pink, and the time it was green and the time it was-“
Thatch dramatically sighed. “Alright….I won’t touch your food this time.”
Ace made an ‘I’m watching you’ motion before going after you. Something was obviously bothering you and whatever it was, it had to do with Teach. You’ve never left his sight while you’ve been here so nothing could have happened. The look you had on your face though, it was like you saw a ghost. A rather ugly ghost. You hadn’t made it that far so he called out your name as he rushed to catch up with you.
He made it to your side and brushed his shoulder against yours. “Are you sure that you’re okay? You barely ate anything.”
You tried to force a smile, but Ace could see the inner turmoil you were having. “I’m okay, everything’s happening a bit fast for me, but overall I’m okay. Oh, and I'll eat a big lunch later if it makes you feel better. I just lost my appetite.”
He nodded. “Maybe we can eat outside if that makes you feel better? Or in my room, just don’t tell Marco.” He ended with a wink.
A real smile broke through your mask. “Outside will work, thank you.”
He smiled to himself and did a mental cheer. At least he got a smile out of you. Pushing the subject of Teach would probably wipe that smile off your face again, so Ace elected to bring it up later. “So, where to? I can go ahead and give a grand tour if you’re up for it.”
“A tour sounds great, but first I would like to talk to Whitebeard again.”
“Hm, I can take you to him. I didn’t see Pops or Marco at breakfast so they’re probably still in the meeting room going over things.” He held out his hand. “Shall we?”
“Are you showing me around as an excuse to hold my hand?”
Ace gasped and held his free hand to his chest. “I would never……Are you gonna take my hand though? So I don’t look like an idiot.”
“Well it's too late for that last part, but I suppose that I can hold your hand.” You accepted his outstretched hand. “Satisfied?”
He interlaced his fingers with yours which caused a blush to overtake your cheeks. “Very satisfied and I’ll even ignore that first comment.”
A minute passed.
“So were you planning to just stand here and hold my hand or were you gonna take me to Whitebeard?”
“Oh right, yeah. Follow me.”
Just as Ace predicted, both Whitebeard and Marco were still going over some things in the meeting room. They both turned to look at the door as soon as it creaked open. Marco put down the paper he was reading over. “Well, if it isn't trouble.”
Ace, in a very mature fashion, stuck his tongue out at the First Division commander. Said commander rolled his eyes and looked over at you. “I’m assuming you want to talk to Pops?”
Nodding, you squeezed Ace’s hand. “Yeah, and would it be alright if I spoke to him alone?”
Marco and Whitebeard shared a look, to which Whitebeard nodded. With a sigh, Marco got up. “I was starting to get hungry anyway.”
Meanwhile, Ace held a look of confusion. “Alone?”
Marco’s hand fell on his shoulder. “Don’t tell me you’re getting separation anxiety already? They’ll be fine without you.”
Ace pouted and looked over at you, and you were quick to shake your head. “Oh no, you’re not pulling the puppy dog eyes on me,” You squeezed his hand again and dropped it. “I’ll find you after, I promise.”
With a grumble, he let Marco pull him out of the room.
That left you and the towering captain alone. It was going to take time to get used to how big this man was. Whitebeard broke the silence. “I had a feeling I’d be seeing you today.”
Rubbing the back of your neck, you sat in Marco’s previous spot. “Yeah, I never made it back last night so here I am.”
“Well, you are formally welcome aboard this ship until we can get you home. I’m sure Ace will be pleased to let you stay in his room….again.” He sent you a wink.
You flushed and stammered over your next words. “It's..uh…It’s not like that Whitebeard sir. We’re just friends. But thank you.”
Whitebeard let out a rumbling laugh followed by a cough. “I’m only teasing you. Now, I’m sure you have more questions after our conversation last night.”
You frowned as you recalled why you came to talk. “I do have questions for you, so many.” Clasping your hands in front of you, you stared at them as you continued. “There was…There was something else that I wanted to talk about though. Before I get to that I just need to know one thing. Did you know where my grandmother was from? Where she was really from?"
He rubbed his chin in thought as he tried to recall. It appeared to come to him as he nodded. “Ah, why matter of fact she did. I don’t think anyone really believed her though. Something about a different world? Quite the story now that I think about it.”
“It wasn’t a story, she was telling the truth. We aren’t from here. I know that it sounds crazy, but doesn’t it make a little bit of sense? Surely she freaked out when she came here?”
“Hm, she did seem to scream when she saw me and fainted at the sight of Namur. We just thought she came from a sheltered island. I guess we should have given her the benefit of the doubt but we didn’t. So I guess I’ll have to give it to you now, tell me more.”
Where to even begin. You told him all about your world. How there were no fruits that gave you powers. How there were no sea kings in your seas (well not anymore at least). How pirates were completely different in your world. How the governments basically fucked over their own citizens for their own gain-oh wait maybe that wasn’t completely different than this place.
There was another thing that you were hesitant to bring up. However, that hesitation left you as soon as you remembered what would happen if you didn’t bring it up. “There’s another thing about where I come from which is perhaps the most unbelievable. Bear with me.”
“Something more unbelievable than a different world? I’m all ears.”
With a sigh you explained to him that this world actually wasn’t new to you. That this was the setting of a story called One Piece, that was actually set to begin soon. A purely fictional world and yet somehow you were magically transported here. “This must sound insane to you, especially since this is only the second conversation I’ve had with you. But I was actually going to combust if I held on to this information any longer and I didn't want to freak Ace out-”
Whitebeard cut you off with a wave of his hand. “Slow down. This is quite the information to take in. I’m assuming that I’m the only one that knows any of this?”
You nodded. “I didn’t tell Ace, I didn’t want him to think I was crazy and not talk to me anymore. I wasn’t planning on telling anyone yet, but this morning….well I changed my mind and came straight here after breakfast.”
He hummed. “I see, you were smart not to tell anyone. These sons of mine have seen many crazy things across these seas, but this might be one of the most unbelievable. I myself am having trouble wrapping my head around this.”
You needed to think of something that would get him to fully believe you. Telling him you know Ace’s biological father? Maybe not, Ace could have told you that and it didn’t feel right. Using Luffy’s upcoming bounty could work but that would be cutting it close to Teach’s betrayal. What else could you use as proof though? “That’s understandable, however there’s maybe only a few weeks before something happens on this ship that will change everything and not in a good way.”
Silence rang out as Whitebeard thought over your cryptic warning. Not your personal best, but you only had a month here. Waiting too long to say anything would be risky and you wanted to at least try to save these doomed pirates. Your leg bounced as you waited for him to say anything.
“How sure are you that something will happen on my ship? I have many strong sons who’ve been with me for years. Why would something happen now?”
A sigh left you. “It's because of a devil fruit. The one who found it will be murdered by the one who wants it. It’ll lead to a one man manhunt which then turns into a rescue which will lead to war. I know you’re a family man sir. I’ve seen what will happen and I want to help prevent it.”
“A murder? Who would dare to do such a thing? My sons are family, to think the mere power of a devil fruit would be enough for them to turn on each other. I’ll have to think about what you’ve told me. We’ll discuss this later.”
“But-”
“Since I knew your grandmother, I’ve given you the benefit of the doubt. You’ve said some things that I need time to process. For now, why don’t you bring Marco back in here.”
“I still have more questions though.”
“You’re here until the next full moon, are you not? We will have time to explore your questions. Now go on.” He sent you off with a wave of his hand.
Well that went better than you had anticipated. At least he heard you out. In the meantime, you’d have to keep an eye on Teach and Thatch. Maybe you could join the 4th division this month to stay close to Thatch as well. As you exited the meeting room, Ace was waiting nearby.
At first glance, you couldn’t tell if he was asleep or not. His hat was pulled over his face as he was laying back against the railing. The knee he had propped up was swaying in tandem with the waves crashing against the hull. You made your way over and crouched in front of him. “Hey flameboy, are you awake?”
Movement caught your eye as he tipped his hat up with his finger to peek out at you. You were met with a pout. “You’ve got to get better with those nicknames. I’m not a boy anymore. I’m a man.”
You raised your eyebrow. “Says the man who is pouting right now. Is this gonna be a recurring thing? Maybe I should call you a big baby.”
Ace sat up so fast that you almost fell back onto your ass. “Please do not call me that.” Now that he was sitting up, his face was really close to yours. Close enough to count every individual freckle. Your face flushed as you avoided eye contact.
A smirk spread across his lips. “Is someone blushing? Didn’t know I had that effect on you.” He leaned in closer to whisper in your ear. “I could give you a real reason to blush.”
The heat coming from your cheeks could rival the heat of the man in front of you. He really was gonna be the death of you. With your racing thoughts, you pulled his hat down to cover his face and quickly got up. “I- I have to go find Marco.” With a turn of your heel, you quickly fled Ace’s sight to find the blond phoenix.
Ace pulled his hat out of his face and watched you rush off. A grin stretched across his face, but quickly fell at the sound of snickering. Turning, he found Thatch approaching with a look of mischief on his face. “Oh that was smooth. Usually though, people shouldn’t run away if you flirt with them.”
He glared at the 4th Division commander, but couldn’t fight the blush spreading across his face. “It wasn’t that bad.”
Thatch deadpanned at him. “No, it was pretty bad. I could help you though. Unlike someone, I know how to flirt and not have them flee from me.”
Rolling his eyes, Ace got up from the deck. “Alright, fine. Let’s hear it.”
With a ‘tsk’, Thatch crossed his arms. “You have to say please.”
“Please, Thatch.”
“Like you really mean it.”
Ace sighed and held a hand to his forehead. “Please? Thatch I am completely hopeless without your help.”
“Now, that's more like it. Come on, hotshot.” Thatch wrapped his arm around Ace to guide him in the direction you went. “We have lots to work on.”
You had been lucky and found Marco fairly quickly. He was coming out of the mess hall with a nurse who held a plate piled with food. When he noticed you, he spoke quietly with her before she took off in the direction you were coming from. She shot you a smile as she passed. Marco walked over to you. “So, I’m assuming your talk went okay?”
“It was an okay talk, I just wish we would've talked more before he sent me to find you.”
He patted you on the shoulder. “You’ll have plenty of opportunities to talk with him, yoi. For now, I’d go find Ace. Last I saw, he was moping.”
You tried and failed to cover your returning blush. “I already found him.”
“Oh?” He raised an eyebrow and smirked. “I’m surprised he’s not glued to your side right now then.”
“Well….I may have ran away from him.” You winced.
Marco hummed as he looked behind you. “That didn’t seem to deter him too much. Have fun with that, yoi.” You whipped around as Marco walked off.
Low and behold, there Ace was. He was talking in hushed whispers with Thatch before being shoved forward until he was in front of you. Ace shot Thatch a glare while the cook gave him a thumbs up. A smile tugged at the corner of your lips at the display.
Ace cleared his throat. Embarrassment was written all over his face. “So, uh, about that tour I mentioned. You still up for it?”
“Yeah of course. I wouldn’t want to miss out on a grand tour of the Moby Dick. Lead the way, fireman.” You ended with a teasing grin.
His shoulders sagged in relief as he matched your smile. “Well, we should get started if we wanna be done before dinner. Shall we?” He held out his arm.
You hooked your arm with his. “We shall”
The Moby Dick was massive. Ace was a very efficient tour guide though. You both had ended up back in front of the mess hall before dinner, as promised. Ace moved to go in before he noticed your still frame. “You okay?”
“Mhm.” You nodded. “Just…can we eat somewhere else? Please?”
Oh, right. He had offered for them to eat either outside or in his room after this morning. It was starting to get chilly outside so his room was the better option. “Yeah, sure. How about this, I’ll grab us some food and I’ll meet you back at my room? That sound good?”
“That sounds amazing. You’re the best.” You gave him a quick hug before going off in the direction of the cabins.
Ace stood there for a second, blinking slowly before turning into the mess hall. He tried to keep a straight face but couldn't help the upturn of his lips. Piling two plates full of food, he tried to slip off before being noticed by Thatch or Marco. You leave a few dishes in your room while you go off on a two week long mission and suddenly you can’t be trusted. It was one time and they still wouldn’t let him live it down.
Before he could make it out unnoticed, his path was blocked. “Zehahaha, where are you off to, Commander? Is your little friend scared to join us?”
Ace’s eyes darted to the door. “Oh, hey Teach. They’re just feeling a little…overwhelmed. Give it a few days and they’ll fit right in. I’ll see you later.” He quickly made his way around the large man.
As the 2nd Division Commander left his sight, Teach pondered. You had shown up out of nowhere last night and seemingly had Ace wrapped around your finger already. He also noticed your gaze on him this morning and how you had fled soon after. It was very odd. Hopefully, this wouldn't hinder his search for the Dark-Dark Fruit. He’d been stuck around this bumbling crew for long enough. With that final thought, he resumed his own dinner.
Ace’s room was exactly how you left it this morning. Your gaze wandered over to the mirror and sure enough, the image of your own room was there. Luckily, you had invested in timer lights so you wouldn’t rack up a high electric bill while you were here. The room was mostly dark, save for the street lights outside of your window. You were really gonna miss your bed.
The opening of the door caught your attention. Ace walked in and set two plates down on his desk. “Dinner has arrived and I didn’t get caught. Well, almost.” He muttered the last part.
“Oh my god, it smells amazing.” Your stomach grumbled as you picked up one of the plates and immediately dug in. Ace chuckled as he began to woof down his own food.
A comfortable silence enveloped the both of you as you ate. The food was as delicious as it smelled. You regretted barely touching your breakfast, Thatch’s cooking skills were not exaggerated. Being the first one to finish your food, you set your plate back down on the desk. “Remind me to tell Thatch that this food is the greatest thing I've ever eaten.”
“Imagine this food, but everyday. Three times a day. The 4th Division really knows their way around the kitchen.”
“Maybe, I could hang around them and get them to teach me their ways. I know how to cook, but I’ve never made anything this good.” There was also an alternative reason you wanted to hang around the 4th division. Ace didn’t need to know that though, not right now at least.
“They’re good and all, but wouldn’t you rather hang with the 2nd division? I hear they're really cool and their commander is, and I quote, ‘the best’.” Ace wore a cocky grin as he set his plate down.
“Eh, I’ll be the judge of that. Oh! By the way, you’re cool with me staying with you while I'm here, right? I didn’t just wanna assume, even though I technically was here last night, but one night is different than a whole month and-”
Ace quickly put a stop to your rambling. “Yes! It’s totally cool with me. I did kinda assume you’d be staying with me anyway.” He rubbed the back of his neck with a sheepish smile.
“Well that’s a relief. I can make a place on the floor or-”
“No!” Once again, he was quick to interrupt. “I can sleep on the floor and you can take the bed. You’re my guest.”
“You could’ve let me finish. As I was saying, Or we could share the bed? I don’t want you to sleep on the floor-don’t interrupt me again, and you don’t want me to sleep on the floor. So I guess it would be a win-win situation? Unless you don’t want to.” You trailed off, suddenly feeling nervous.
You were fully comfortable with sharing the bed with Ace, but didn’t know if he’d be comfortable. If it came down to it, you could place a pillow in between you both. Doubt started to creep in your mind the longer he stayed silent. Was that too forward? Sharing a bed could be platonic. Although, it hasn’t exactly been only platonic between the two of you today.
Meanwhile, Ace felt like his brain had been fried. You wanted to share a bed with him, willingly. It was the better option for both of you. Well, not for his heart which felt like it was gonna fly out of his chest. Shit, he needed to say something. “We can share, no big deal.”
With that settled, the both of you got ready for bed. Ace had let you borrow some of his clothes and let you change while he took your dishes back to the kitchen. When he returned, you were already under the covers, seemingly asleep. Not wanting to disturb you, he quietly moved around the room to turn off the lights and to kick off his shoes.
He then made his way to the opposite side of the bed and made himself comfortable.
You must have been cold with the way you were gripping the blankets. Honestly, he didn’t know why he’d kept blankets on his bed. Being made of fire, he didn’t really need them when he never got cold anymore. He turned to face the wall and closed his eyes.
Before he could fall asleep though, he heard a faint rustling before you spoke up. “Ace?”
He hummed in response.
“I’m really glad you found that mirror.”
Turning, he blinked sleepily at you. You were already facing him. A smile came to his face. “I am too, I really like having you around. Kinda wish it wasn’t only for a month though, it’d be nice if you stayed.”
That’s where you were conflicted. You couldn’t just abandon your life, although there wasn’t much waiting for you back home. No friends, no family and you’d doubt that you had a job when you got back. ‘Sorry I went MIA for a whole month, I was sailing the grand line with the Whitebeard Pirates’ wasn’t exactly believable. On the other hand, you knew nothing about being a pirate. You had no skills that would prove you a valuable crewmember. The last thing you wanted was to feel like deadweight.
“I don’t know Ace, I don’t think I have what it takes to be a fearsome Whitebeard Pirate.” You cast aside your worries for now.
“I mean, less than five minutes of you being here you tried to steal from me. I think you’d be fine.” Ace’s smile turned teasing as you flushed.
“I wasn’t- I was not gonna steal from you. I would have put your bag back exactly how I found it-stop laughing at me.” It was your turn to pout as Ace snickered.
“I’m only teasing, but seriously you have a month to pick up some pirate skills. The most important thing is there's almost no rules. You basically get to do whatever you want. Freedom is a pirate's greatest treasure.”
“Who knew you could be a great sap.” His words did give you some comfort though. Every pirate was different, you just had to figure out what kind you would turn out to be. If you decided to stay.
“Oh there's plenty of where that came from. Now, why don’t we get some sleep?”
The both of you turned away from each other with matching smiles as you fell asleep. The last 24 hours had been a whirlwind of chaos and the chaos would probably get worse the longer you were here. You didn’t mind that much though, as long as it was a good kind of chaos. Maybe that’s just what you needed. Who would’ve thought that the most exciting thing to happen to you would be because of a dusty mirror in your grandmother's attic.

Marco had a firm grip on your shoulder as he led you to your doom Whitebeard. The sky was still dark with only the moonlight shining down over you both. You could feel your heartbeat hammering as you both moved through the night. Your anxiety was practically eating you alive. You were about to meet an Emperor of the Sea and you weren't meeting under the best conditions.
You both finally stopped in front of a large door. Marco knocked loudly before entering the room with you in tow. The Whitebeard was sitting at a desk over by the wall. He was huge, you felt like a mere ant with his sheer height. You knew he was massive compared to a normal human, but it was still jarring to see in person. The sound of the door closing and a cough caused him to turn your way and he raised an eyebrow while looking you over.
“Marco? Who’s the brat?”
The mentioned pushed you forward and crossed his arms as he leaned against the door. “Don’t know. A stowaway is my guess. Found them in Ace’s room with a handful of berries from his bag. They look harmless, but Ace was out cold on the floor when I walked in. They said they could explain so here we are.”
Whitebeard’s face hardened at the thought of harm coming to one of his sons. His gaze pierced through you. “Explain yourself or you’ll be sleeping with the sea kings.”
You felt like you were going to throw up, but it would do you no good here so you pushed your anxiety aside for the moment. “It’s kinda complicated but I promise you I didn’t do anything to Ace. We were messing around and he just fell asleep, I swear on my life. Just wait until he wakes up and he’ll back me up.”
The tension in the room was suffocating. They had no reason to believe you and if you told them where you were from, they’d probably toss you overboard anyways. You feared for your life if Ace didn’t wake soon.
“That doesn’t answer the question as to why you were going through his stuff or how you got here, yoi.”
You bit your lip as you thought of what to say. “As I said, it’s complicated. I’m not sure you’ll believe me if I tell you. And I admit that I was snooping, but I should’ve known better. My curiosity got the better of me, but it wasn’t my intention to steal. Honest.”
Whitebeard’s gaze never left you as he spoke to Marco. “Go check on Ace and see if he’ll wake up to verify.” You couldn’t tear your eyes away from the hulking figure before you, so you assumed Marco nodded. The door shut behind him as he left the room. “Now, I want you to tell me how you got on my ship undetected. None of this ‘complicated’ crap.”
So you told him. Well, about the mirror, not the being from a different world. Finding it hidden away, befriending Ace and going through it, you told him everything. He studied your face as if looking for something. Whatever it was, he found it as he nodded. “Yes, I know all about that mirror.”
You furrowed your eyebrows. “Wait, you know about it?”
He let out a barking laugh. “It was on my ship was it not? I’ll admit though, it’s been a long time since it was last used.”
“Last used? Does that mean someone from my side came here?”
“It was a long time ago, but yes someone came through. In the end though, she made the choice to return to her home to her family.”
You were trying to wrap your head around it. You weren't the first? Then who was?
“In fact, you look like her spitting image.” His words caused your thoughts to come to a halt. Your grandmother used to say that you reminded her of herself in her youth. There was no way he was talking about your sweet, old granny though, right?
“Wait. Whitebeard, sir, what exactly are you implying? That my grandmother came here and never told me?”
He let out a sigh. “We both agreed that it would be better for less people to know about the mirrors. It was too dangerous for people from her side to come here. So we hid them and I guess neither of us had the heart to get rid of it. Which is why it was so easy for you and Ace to stumble upon them.”
Everything he was saying made sense. You had never seen the mirror before you found it in the attic. Now that you thought about it, you could recall her wistful face, eyes longing for a place far from home when she thought you weren’t paying attention. You just thought it was for your absent parents, not a fictional pirate world.
This was a lot to take in. One thought occurred to you though. “You’re not gonna like tell me that you’re my grandpa are you? There’s only so much I can handle in a short amount of time.”
Whitebeard let out another chuckle and shook his head. “No, we were just good friends. I offered her a spot on my crew even. If she didn’t have people relying on her then I think she would have taken my offer. That’s why we were such good friends, we shared a love for family.”
You nodded along with what he was saying, that did sound like her. It would have been cool if you were actually related to Whitebeard though. Insane, but cool. Who would have thought that you’d be talking about your dead grandma with an emperor of the sea.
“Do you also know about-”
You were interrupted by the door opening and a face full of freckles.
The first thing Ace became aware of was a sharp stinging in his nose. He abruptly sat up and furiously rubbed at his nose, nearly colliding with Marco. He didn’t even remember falling asleep. One minute he was goofing with you and the next he was being woken up. Speaking of you, his gaze drifted to the mirror. You weren’t in it but it still reflected your bedroom.
“If you’re looking for your little friend, they're with Pops.” His attention was pulled over to the blond.
“Wait, they’re here?! Can you take me to them?” Ace practically jumped to his feet. Marco stopped him before he could rush to you.
“Slow down hotshot, I need you to verify that they aren’t a threat.”
“A threat? Did they look like a threat? C’mon Marco they were unarmed and in pajamas. No, they aren’t a threat….except maybe to pillows.”
Marco huffed and threw up his hands in exasperation. “How was I supposed to know?! You were passed out and they were snooping through your stuff,” He gestured to the fallen bag with berries surrounding it. “And you should know in this world that appearances can be deceiving.”
Ace rolled his eyes and adjusted his hat. “You can tell me all about deceiving appearances or whatever later. Can you take me to see them now?”
Marco nodded and led the way to Pop’s room. The night sky was clear, stars twinkling around the full moon. There was a soft breeze that ruffled through Marco’s hair and pulled at Ace’s stampede strap from his hat. The deck was void of life, save for the people on watch.
They made their way to Pop’s door where they could make out the faint conversation on the other side. Marco suddenly stopped in front of the door and smirked. “You know, Thatch is gonna be ecstatic when he finds out what you’ve been up to.”
Ace groaned and ran his hands down his face. “He’s gonna be so annoying and a pain in my ass.”
“Now you know how we feel.”
“Yeah-hey!”
Bickering entered your ears as the duo walked in. Your conversation with Whitebeard would have to resume later. If there was a later for you here. Warm brown eyes met yours and Ace’s face lit up. “You really are here!”
Marco rolled his eyes as he shut the door behind them. “I wasn’t lying.”
Ace immediately came to your side. Concern flashed across his face. “You’re not in trouble right?” Then he turned to Whitebeard. “They didn’t do anything to me, it was just my narcolepsy.
“Ace, I’m not in trouble. He knows about the thing.”
“He knows?!”
Marco butted in. “Wait, what did I miss? What thing?”
Whitebeard waved his hand and cleared his throat. “Alright Alright, no one is in trouble and I understand the situation now. Marco, I’ll discuss this with you and the other commanders in the morning. For now, let’s all get some rest.”
Marco sighed, knowing he wasn’t going to get any real answers tonight. On his way out, he reminded Ace of the meeting. If Ace missed the first half of another meeting because he slept in, Marco was gonna skin him alive.
Only the three of you remained. You still had a question though. “Wait, one more thing. Why was tonight the only time I could pass through? Any other time we tried it, nothing went through.”
Whitebeard brought his fist to his chin in thought. “I don’t know much, but for some reason, it only fully works during a full moon.”
The mysterious workings of the mirror would have to remain a mystery for now as you let out a loud yawn. You didn't mean to, but the events of the night were starting to catch up to you. You slapped your hands over your mouth and muttered a “Sorry.”
You got a chuckle from both of them. Whitebeard waved you both off. “We can discuss more at a later date. You two go get some rest.”
As you both made your way to Ace’s room, you stopped to admire the night sky. It took Ace a moment to realise you weren't right behind him and he shot you a questioning look over his shoulder. “You okay?”
You nodded as you breathed in the scent of the ocean. “You know, this is the first time I've ever been on a ship. And I haven’t seen this many stars in a long time. Let me soak it in for a minute, who knows when I'll get another chance when I go back.”
Ace thought for a second. “You don’t have to go back.”
“I can’t just stay here, Ace. I have a life back home.”
He scoffed. “What life? You always complain about work and you have no friends, no offense.”
“Offense taken! I have friends….I just don’t see them often.”
“Whatever you say,” He raised his hands in defense. “I’m just saying you have a choice.”
Did you? Sure, it sounded appealing, but you weren’t made for this world. Sailing the seas with an Emperor? It was a death sentence for you. Not to mention what you knew of their fates. You were brought out of your thoughts by Ace’s hand on your shoulder.
“Just think about it, okay?”
You absentmindedly nodded. You couldn’t bring yourself to say no to him. A smile tugged at his lips and his hand drifted down to yours. Your cheeks darkened but you didn’t have time to ponder as he firmly gripped your hand and started dragging you. “Wha-Ace!’
“C’mon, we’re supposed to be getting rest. Weren't you yawning like five minutes ago? We can stargaze another night.”
“Stargaze?” You laughed. “You wish I’d stargaze with you. And that's if i come back”
“Blah blah blah can’t hear you.”
“You’re such an idiot.”
“Can I be your idiot?”
“Ace!”
You never made it to your bed. Once you and Ace had gotten back to his room, you had realized what a mess you had made earlier. A bunch of random things were sprawled across the floor. After cleaning that up, your eyes could barely stay open. You had both collapsed on his bed and it was oh so comfortable. You knew that all you had to do was to cross a couple of feet to get to your bed, but it was like your body was made of lead. Surely you could just close your eyes for just a few minutes. You didn’t even realise that you fell asleep until the next morning.
The next thing you were aware of was sunlight streaming in. Oh no. You sat up in a rush, blanket falling from your figure. Wait, you don’t remember covering up last night. Ace must have draped it over you. Ace. He wasn’t in the room after a quick survey. Didn’t Marco say something about a meeting?
Panic was starting to creep in. Whitebeard had said that you could only pass through the mirror during a full moon and the next one wouldn’t be for a month. You were now officially stuck here. You were so getting fired when you got back. Sighing, you ran your hands through your hair. You could handle this.
Knocking caught your attention. It must have been Ace. Well you hoped it was Ace or this was going to be awkward. Should you respond? Before you could decide, the door opened just a bit
A wave of messy black hair peeked out from the door. Ace had his hand covering his eyes. “Are you decent?”
You deadpanned. “No, I’m naked.”
“Even better….wait, are you actually?”
Laughing, you got up and made your way over to him and moved his hand from his face. “You really thought I’d be waiting for you naked? In your dreams, Portgas.”
He pouted. “Why do you have to be so mean to me? I could leave you to fend for yourself, you know.”
“You wouldn’t and you know it.”
“I guess you’re right,” He sighed dramatically. “On to a more important matter….Are you hungry?”
That’s how you found yourself in the mess hall. Curious glances were thrown your way. You’d be shocked too if a newcomer showed up while you were literally in the middle of the ocean. You tried to ignore the prying eyes as you followed behind Ace. Whatever was being served smelled delicious. Your stomach growled.
Ace laughed. Then his stomach growled and he stopped. He cleared his throat. “You’re gonna love this food, Thatch is a god in the kitchen.”
A large pompadour popped into your vision. “Oh so now you’re singing my praises, you’re lucky if I gave you anything after you used the ‘O’ word.”
“You’re still mad about that? You can’t ignore the truth that you’re getting old-“
Ace was suddenly pulled into a headlock. “Don’t you dare finish that sentence or I’m giving you the scraps for a month.” Ace managed to make a thumbs up with his hand before he was released. The arm that was around his neck moved to his shoulders “Now, why don’t you introduce me to your friend.”
“Oh right,” he introduced you. “And this here is Thatch, fourth division commander and our cook. We don’t know what we’d do without him.”
Oh, this was Thatch. His death would become the catalyst to the horrors of the future. It was an odd feeling being around so many people who you knew would die for the sake of the main storyline. You managed to muster up a smile. “I’ve heard quite a bit about you.”
“Only good things I hope, now why don’t we get you two something to eat.”
Breakfast with the Whitebeard Pirates was oddly domestic. They were like a giant, loud, family. Despite Ace’s wishes, Thatch decided that he was going to tell you embarrassing stories about Ace from the past year. Including the time he tried to use his devil fruit to bake cookies and he burned all of them, Thatch had made him eat the whole batch after. Every. Last. Crumb. Which had gotten Ace a lifetime ban from the kitchen.
As Thatch rambled on, you sat back and admired the scene in front of you. You had only ever had your grandmother for breakfasts like this. After weeks of lonely meals, it was a nice feeling to have again. A figure on the other side of the mess hall caught your eye and a shiver ran down your spine.
Marshall D. Teach or as you better know him, Blackbeard.
He was just sitting there, having a conversation with his table mates. Nothing that looked out of the ordinary as he laughed obnoxiously. You knew however that it was just a facade. A hand suddenly waved in your face, bringing your focus back to your own table mates. Both Thatch and Ace had concerned looks on their faces, but Thatch was the one to speak up first. “You okay, kid? You totally zoned out on us.”
You shook your head and pushed your plate over to Ace. “I’m fine I uh….I’m just not hungry anymore.”
Thatch shrugged it off. Ace, however, had followed your gaze over to Teach’s table. He knew Teach wasn’t the prettiest pirate, but he wasn’t a bad guy... well, as far as being a pirate went. So what had caused you to freeze up? He would have to ask you later.
You were feeling conflicted now. You had told yourself you wouldn’t interfere but it wasn’t that easy anymore. Now, you were in the story. If you got your calculations right, you might still be here when it happens. Could you really just stand on the sidelines and not do anything?
No you couldn’t. Maybe if you warned Whitebeard then Teach would never get the chance to kill Thatch for that devil fruit. Ace wouldn’t go on a manhunt that would result in defeat, imprisonment and death. The Whitebeard pirates would remain as one instead of losing their captain. Screw the storyline Sorry Luffy. Right now, these were real people and not characters on a screen or page.
One thing was for certain, you needed to talk to Whitebeard again.

a/n: this is very loosely based on the movie "love across time" i had the idea through a scene on TikTok and watched the movie for a better idea of what i was going to do and this was the result! I wrote over 1k words and them completely rewrote this 🫠
It all started when your grandmother died. Bless her soul, she was one of the few people you had left in this world. Your parents were out of the picture and you had no siblings. Granny was the one who raised you and you were there to keep her company during her last years. You had known it was only a matter of time when she took a turn for the worse a few months ago. In a blink of an eye, your little family of two turned into just you.
The funeral had already been planned. That woman had to have things go exactly as she wanted even from beyond the grave. All of the funeral proceedings had passed in a blur. One moment you were saying your final goodbyes and the next her casket was being lowered into the ground. You felt numb, even if you knew this had to happen eventually. Even though you had other friends, your grandma was your best friend. You didn’t have a clue what you were going to do without her.
You were the sole inheritor of her will. All of her assets, including the house, were now in your name. You didn’t really care for anything except the house. It was home. It still carried her scent and everything reminded you of her. You spent the next few days going through boxes of memories that she had under her bed. A teary smile painting your face the entire time. The pictures proved how much she loved you. You’d miss her for the rest of your life.
There must have been more boxes somewhere. Memory lane had you in its nostalgia inducing grip. The only other place you could think of was the attic. It wasn’t your favorite place. Dust, cobwebs and an interesting smell awaited you. As soon as you made your way into the attic, you let out a sneeze. You don’t think anyones cleaned up here in years. There were many boxes, mostly filled with old toys, baby blankets and holiday decorations. Old sheet covered furniture was tucked in the corner.
A glint of light caught your eye. Your eyes followed the path to find a half covered mirror. It was practically calling your attention. You pulled the rest of the sheet off, coughing when a wave of dust flew off. The mirror frame was beautiful. Covered in elegant golden carvings, it was full length and in perfect condition. Why was this collecting dust up here? You wondered if you could bring it downstairs by yourself. Luckily, when you tried moving it, it wasn’t difficult to move. You were able to wrangle it down the attic stairs with ease. The question now was where to place it.
It was too big for the hallway and you didn’t want to move anything from the living room. No other room was a good fit so it looked like you’d be rearranging your room. Weeks of clothes build up had been cleared away and you made space next to your window. The mirror fit snugly against the wall and brought a certain pop to your room. You adjusted the mirror so that the lighting would complement your figure. Once you were satisfied, you decided you needed a quick snack break.
It's safe to say you got side tracked and completely forgot what you originally went to the attic for. You guess that’d have to wait another day because you did not feel like doing anything else for the day. Maybe it was time to pick up where you left off on One Piece. You had left off right before the time skip, having needed a nice break after Marineford. Then your grandma's health had worsened and you just hadn’t gotten around to continuing. A couple of episodes went by before you grew drowsy and started to nod off.
You woke up a few hours later to a dark room. The tv had turned off sometime when you fell asleep. You got up and stretched. It probably wasn’t a good idea to take a nap so late. Might as well go to your room and hopefully get a few more hours of sleep. As you made your way into your room to get ready for bed, you didn’t notice a golden shimmer materialize across the mirror. So it came as a shock when you passed in front of the mirror and your reflection was not looking back at you. In fact, it wasn't even your room that appeared. There wasn’t anything appearing. It looked like a giant white canvas, as if a sheet was covering it but there was no sheet.
Odd. You chalked it up to being groggy from your nap. It was better than thinking that you were starting to hallucinate. The mirror was tomorrow's problem. Right now, you just wanted to go back to sleep. You only had a few more days before you were supposed to go back to work so you needed to get a bunch of stuff done this weekend. As you were drifting back to sleep, you swore you could hear faint chatter and the sound of the ocean. ‘I thought the tv was off?’ was your last thought before you fell back to sleep.
The Moby Dick was a large ship. Too big to be sent on a scavenger hunt. Having to search all of the storage rooms to find a few measly things was like some sort of punishment. Oh wait, it was.
Ace had ‘forgotten’ to do a report on one of the 2nd divisions' latest missions. So here he was after a stern lecture from Marco, given a list of things to check off for inventory. He was told that he had to complete the list before dinner or Thatch wouldn’t save him any. That jerk. Ace thought it was a waste of time for him but had quickly silenced himself with a look from Marco. ‘Well you should have used your time to write up a mission report but here we are.’ he had remarked while handing Ace the list and walking off.
Well, hours had passed and so had dinner. Ace could hear his stomach growling. There was only one thing left on the list. All he had to do was find some bed sheets for the infirmary. The light in the room was dim so Ace used his devil fruit to navigate the darker spots. Aha! There were some sheets draped over some old boxes. He had taken the sheet from the largest box only to find it wasn’t a box, it was a mirror. How odd for such an elegant looking thing to be stuffed in the back of a storage room. Must have been Izo’s. He shrugged and checked another box that was full of sheets. Nodding to himself, Ace checked off the final box on the list. Hopefully Thatch wouldn’t mind him getting a midnight meal.
Before he left though, the mirror caught his eye again. There was a faint golden shimmer before his reflection shifted. Instead of his surroundings, a bedroom appeared on the other side. Ace tilted his head. “Huh, who knew we had a magic mirror.” He lifted his hand to the mirror but it was stopped by the glass. He was so absorbed in the idea of a mysterious mirror that he didn’t notice the figure on the other side. A shriek rang out and he snapped back to attention and held out his hands.
“Woah woah woah! No need for screaming. I can’t hurt you or anything. Not that I would want to hurt you.” Ace rambled on. He took in the figure who had appeared and his cheeks flushed. You were cute. The last thing he wanted to do was scare someone who was cute. It was totally not cool of him. He noticed that you made no movements and your face was frozen in shock.
Oh god, there was someone in your mirror. It had been days since you saw something odd in the mirror but when you woke up the next morning, it was totally normal. This was not a totally normal mirror. You had come into your room after a long day from work and suddenly a man was in your mirror. The room behind him was dim so you could barely make out his figure even as he tried to calm you down.
You could barely focus on what he was saying but, you could've sworn you've heard that voice before. That voice. It was on the tip of your tongue. You realized he wasn’t speaking anymore and snapped back to attention. “Okay, I’m gonna hope that you’re not real and I’m actually talking to myself or this is a weird dream. Who are you and why are you in my mirror?”
“Your mirror? I’m pretty sure that you’re in my mirror, not that I mind.” He shrugged and sent you a wink. Unfortunately for him, you didn’t catch it.
“I’m gonna ignore that last part, mirror man. And you didn’t answer my question.” You crossed your arms.
“Mirror man? That's the best you could come up with? You’re telling me that you don’t recognize me? I’m a very wanted man. I’ll tell you who I am when you tell me who you are, shrieker.”
Oh so you had a wanted criminal in your mirror. This was just what you needed. Well, it appeared that he wasn’t hostile. So you told him your name. “Okay you have my name, can I finally know yours and also maybe see who I’m talking to. You have really bad lighting.”
“Yeah, yeah. I’m on it.” He lit his hand on fire. You gasped in shock. He continued on as if it was perfectly normal for him. As the flaming hand drew near to his face, you could begin to make out his features. He was tall, lean and shirtless. It also looked like he had a tattoo. Wait. Wait. Suddenly it clicked why that voice was so familiar. You knew who it was before you could see his face. This was impossible. The figure was-
“Since you wanna know my name so badly, it’s Ace. Portgas D Ace.”
You could barely make out warm brown eyes and a sea of freckles before everything went black. The last thing you heard was a panicked voice calling out.

a/n: and here is part 2! thank you for all the love on part 1 <3 i hadn't planned on making this weekly but i may have to keep it like that due to life events
Ace went into a panic as soon as you dropped. He couldn’t do anything but call out to you in hopes that you would wake up. About a minute passed before he saw your eyes begin to flicker open. A sigh of relief passed through him. No one has ever fainted at the mere mention of his name before. “Are you okay? You didn’t hit your head too hard, right?”
You slowly regained your bearings. The figure in the mirror hadn’t disappeared so this was definitely not a dream. He was still shrouded in the dim light, his fire must have gone out when you went down. “I’m okay? At least physically I am. Mentally? Well the jury is still out on that one.” You finally sat up, deciding to stay on the floor instead of standing.
This was real. A fictional character from a fictional story was in your mirror. The more times you said it, the crazier it seemed. It was crazy but it was real. You could make out his figure- Ace’s figure looking around his side of the mirror. He grumbled under his breath when he couldn’t find what he was looking for. “Okay, I’m gonna move it so hopefully you can see me better.” Without waiting for you to answer, he easily lifted the mirror and moved it to a better lit spot.
Finally you were able to see him in his full glory. Everything was accurate from his boots to the hat that covered his head. He looked good. You tried to act as if you weren’t looking at his chest for longer than you needed to. There was a faint smirk on his lips that told you that he knew. Your cheeks grew warm. “So you’re Ace? Like Fire Fist Ace?”
“Yup! Proud second division commander of the Whitebeard pirates, at your service.” He took his hat off and held it to his chest as he bowed.
A thought occurred to you. Where in the timeline was this Ace? He must have been on the Moby Dick so this must have been before Thatch’s death. Could you- No. It was never a good idea to mess with timelines or whatever was happening here. What if you changed everything for the worse? What if you couldn’t change anything?
“So uh, you wouldn’t happen to know exactly how we’re talking through a mirror would you? Cause I’ve heard of inanimate objects getting devil fruit powers but I still can’t wrap my head around it.” He began to ramble while plopping his hat back on his head.
“Yeah let’s go with that. I was just gonna call it a magic mirror.” You decided that you weren’t exactly going to tell him that you were from a different world yet. The world of One Piece was definitely big enough that you could make something up. A sudden thought occurred to you. “Oh and it only works at night! During the day, I just have a regular mirror.” The white thing you saw in the mirror originally must have been a sheet or something. Not unlike how you found your mirror.
His face fell upon realizing it was night time. That's the moment his stomach let out a loud grumble. So caught up in this magic mirror business he had forgotten that he missed dinner and had a task at hand. “Shit, I forgot I didn't eat dinner.” he groaned. On one hand he really wanted food but he really wanted to keep talking to you. This was new and exciting for him and had greatly piqued his interest.
“Well, If you want to go find something to eat. I- I guess that we could continue talking tomorrow?” You offered, knowing better than to keep that man from food.
He beamed at you and rapidly nodded. “That’d be great! I’ll meet you here again tomorrow. Same time?”
You agreed with him and you both said your goodbyes. With a wave of his hand he darted off. He was gone for two seconds before he came back to grab a piece of paper and hurried off again. You still couldn't comprehend that you had just met your favorite character but you were slowly coming to terms with it. The image in the mirror didn’t change so you threw a blanket over it, just in case. You went to bed thinking about the next night, feeling excitement for the first time in awhile.
For the next week, you and Ace talked every night. He had moved the mirror into his room for easier access and less questions from his crew. At dinner, he’d scarf down his food at an all-time high speed just so he could see you- talk to you quicker. Everyone on board could tell something was different with Ace, but they were content with letting him be for now. Well, almost everyone, except Thatch who was the nosiest person ever. Everytime Ace locked eyes with the cook, he was met with a suspicious squint. He tried to wave him off but Thatch was not easily deterred.
“So, Ace, what’s gotten into you this week? You’ve been taking naps all day- and don’t deny it! You snore! And you seem to perk up anytime the sun goes down along with shoveling food down your throat. My food deserves to be appreciated, you brat.” Thatch had blocked Ace from leaving the mess hall, waiting with his arms spread out.
Oh so people had noticed his behavior. This wasn’t embarrassing at all. “Is a man not allowed to take naps anymore? You’re getting strict in your old age, Thatch.” Ace teased him while ducking under him to get out.
“You little shit! I will find out what’s going on with you!”
During your talks, you had told Ace that you were from a boring island in Paradise. He never questioned you and nodded along to every detail you could come up with. In return, Ace told you that he came from the East Blue and was raised by mountain bandits. Nothing you didn’t already know. There was a fond smile etched upon his face as he recalled his time on Dawn Island.
As soon as he would mention Luffy though, you swear you could see a shine in his eyes. You just didn’t know if he was going to start crying, ramble on about his little brother or both. So that’s how most of the nights went. You’d both swap stories, although yours were laced with white lies and exaggerations. Obviously he wouldn’t tell you everything. After all, it has only been a little over a week since that first night you two met. It was nice though, having someone to talk to. None of your friends had reached out since the funeral, not that you were expecting them to. They had always held you at arms length. Ace made you feel less alone.
You still didn’t know when he was in the timeline until a few days later.
You had made a comfortable sitting spot in front of the mirror, ready for a long night's worth of conversation. Yeah it might not have been good for you, skipping hours of sleep just to talk to Ace, but you felt like it was worth it. Not everyone got the chance to talk to their favorite character through a magic mirror. You were wrapped up blankets and feeling nice and cozy when Ace burst into his room.
He called out your name with a large grin and plopped down in front of his side of the mirror. “It’s almost time for Luffy to set sail! His birthday’s right around the corner! I wonder how much he’s gotten stronger, not stronger than me though.” He smirked and lifted his arm in a flex.
Oh so this was right before the main story started. You were going to have to decide soon whether or not you’d warn him of the dangers that lie ahead. It was best to push those thoughts to the back of your mind for now. You’d decide when the time was right.
You scoffed. “Uh huh, I bet he could take you. I hear that he's the determined type.”
He jutted his bottom lip out. The fearsome Fire Fist Ace was pouting. “You’re supposed to be on my side. You don’t even know Luffy,” Actually you knew the future king of the pirates pretty well. You’ve watched at least five hundred episodes of Luffy’s journey so far. “But you are right, he is the most determined person I know. I can’t wait to see what kind of pirate he’ll become.” His pout morphed into a smile.
Those words made your heart lurch. Ace only got to see Luffy twice before he died. It was a sinking feeling to know that the man in front of you was doomed by the narrative. He wasn’t just a character now, he was just Ace. Could you really just sit here and not change anything? Maybe…
“I didn’t know you were such a softie, Ace.” You teased, masking the somber thoughts that were going through your head.
Any other teasing remarks were silenced when a pillow was launched at your head. What the fuck? You held onto the pillow after it fell from your face into your lap. Ace’s pillow? Speaking of Ace, his face mirrored yours in shock. Nothing had ever passed through the mirror before.
“Did that-”
“How-”
You looked down at the pillow and decided to test if it worked both ways. Launching the pillow back to its owner, you stifled a laugh as it struck him in the face. Karma. His look of disbelief shifted into a look of mischief. “Oh it’s so on.”
A game of dodging projectiles broke out. Anything that was in reach went flying back and forth. You both were caught in fits of laughter and smiles. Until Ace dropped to the floor without warning. Shit. “Ace?! That’s not funny.” You were met with silence.
You made your way in front of the mirror and hesitantly reached out a hand. Could people pass through? There was only one way to find out so you pushed your hand through the mirror. Or was it more of a portal? Your hand passed through effortlessly. Oh shit. This was so cool. You snapped your focus back to Ace. Oh right. With a deep breath, you jumped from your room to the Moby Dick.
Unfortunately, you didn't have time to really let that settle. You rushed to Ace and hovered over him. Oh my god, he was so real. Not that you had doubts, but now you could touch him. He was also dead to the world as a loud snore erupted from him. Wait, wasn’t he narcoleptic? You let out a sigh of relief. At least, he didn't literally drop dead.
Kneeling beside him, you shook him. “Ace, wake up!” He did no such thing and continued to reside in dreamland. You huffed and decided to look around his room. Since you two have been having nightly chats, he's kept it clean. A certain green bag caught your eye. Hopefully he wouldn't mind you snooping. You lifted his head and slid one of the pillows under him. Your curiosity had you ruffling through the bag and bringing out a few coins. Your eyes practically shined. Real berries.
While you were snooping, you failed to hear the soft knocks that came from the door. As soon as you had pulled out the berries, the door swung open and Marco the Phoenix stepped through the threshold. “Just wanted to remind you of the commanders meeting tomorrow-”
He froze as he took in your figure with Ace’s bag and berry in hand. His eyes flickered to the sleeping figure on the ground. Well this didn’t look good. You felt as if you were under the gaze of a predator as his eyes narrowed at you.
You dropped the bag and stepped away from it. “I swear this is not what it looks like, I can explain.”
“Oh you’re gonna explain alright, yoi. To Whitebeard himself.”

You had noticed it immediately, the way his usual grin lacked any real warmth and his eyes were a dulled of their usual sparkle. Today was one of those days.
You had known Ace for years, as one of the first members of the Spades and continuing to serve in the second division under his leadership. “You’re not getting rid of me that easily.” you had told him when your fellow Spades were finding their new places amongst the Whitebeards. You’re amongst the few who knew of his true parentage. “I know I'm supposed to be impressed that your sperm donor was the king of the pirates but, it's much more impressive that your mom carried you for 20 months. Now that’s a badass.” The way his tense body slumped in relief and the bright smile and soft eyes he gave you is seared into your memory.
Back to the present. Something was off about him today and you were gonna find out what. So you became his shadow for the day. Following him around the Moby Dick has he went through the motions of his daily routines. His chores? He mopped the same spot for 15 minutes with a faraway look. Lunch? He only had two plates and didn’t even faceplant in them. Sparring? It was less sparring and more like he had something to prove. You didn’t even think he was fully in control of his actions. He had this far away look in his eyes but that didn't stop him from fighting like his life depended on it. After numerous crewmembers started making their way to the infirmary, it was only a matter of time until Marco heard.
Marco was one of the last people you wanted to piss off. Especially if it was causing an abrupt rise in patients on a slow day. You could vaguely make out the pineapple that Marco called his head before he made a beeline for Ace. It wasn’t until Marco made physical contact that Ace seemed to snap back to reality. The second division commander seemed embarrassed and rubbed the back of his neck with a nervous smile but that seemed to ruffle the phoenix's feathers more. “What has gotten into you today?! You took it too far today. Do you know how many people I'm seeing with broken bones and burn marks? You know you're not supposed to use powers for hand to hand sparring, Ace. Get your shit together or I'll tell Pops.”
Ace instantly tensed up, a flash of guilt crossed his face before his gaze hardened. He bowed in apology before rushing off to the crew's quarters. Not even muttering a word as he passed. The deck was silent for a minute before everyone resumed what they were doing before the disaster that was sparring.
Marco frowned and locked eyes with you. With a tilt of his head, you knew his unvoiced question. ‘What crawled up his ass?’ You gave him a concerned look and shrugged. “He’s been like this all day,” was your response when you approached the first division commander. You decided to give Ace a few minutes to himself before you stormed into his room to force him to open up. Marco sighed and ran his palm down his face.
“Well would you be oh so kind, and figure it out before he goes on another rampage.” He pinched the bridge of his nose and gestured to the lingering crew. There were a few who had a slight limp or an ice pack held to their face. You gave him what you hoped was a reassuring smile and a two finger salute before you started making your way into the lion's den.

Ace was not having a good day. He knew from the moment he opened his eyes that today was gonna be one of those days. He could feel it in his bones. All he wanted to do was stay in bed and wallow but he knew he had to show his face sometime. The last thing he wanted or needed was people worrying about him. Especially you. You always had a knack for knowing exactly what he was thinking. It was like some superpower you had. He wondered if you had a secret devil fruit power.
He knew as soon as you got him alone that he'd become a giant puddle of vulnerability. One soft look from you and he was a goner. So his number one objective today was avoiding you. He got lucky when he was one of the last ones in for breakfast. That meant that you had already eaten and started your day. Without you to distract him, he allowed himself to get lost in his thoughts. About how he wasn't good enough. About how he didn't deserve this crew. About how he shouldn't be alive. These thoughts were always in the back of his mind. Most of the time he would just ignore the little negative voices in his mind, but today was different.
He tried, he really tried to put up a happy facade. He kept up with his chores, one spot on deck looked especially clean. Thoughts swirled around his mind all afternoon. Nothing seemed to snap him back to his usual cool guy behavior. Not even lunch. People started to notice when the daily spectacle of his food naps hadn't happened so far. Two plates of food? It looked like he was practically starving himself. Even though he really just wanted to hide away, Ace knew it wasn't going to be long before you or someone cornered him.
Conversations ended in blurs, forced smiles and laughter that were beginning to hurt his cheeks. Being on a crew as rowdy and strong as the Whitebeards meant there were usually sparring matches throughout the day. Usually these were all in good faith and more training than actual fights. One big rule for these was the prohibition of devil fruit powers. It was mainly for close combat practice after all. So that injuries were kept to a minimum. Although some used it as an excuse to go bother the nurses even for a slight scratch. (Thatch)
Everyone knew that Portgas D. Ace didn't run from a fight. That also applied to casual spars. He was strong and he knew it. However he didn't feel strong today. Especially with all the eyes on him today, your eyes. Yeah, he knew you’ve been watching him throughout the day. He could always sense when you were around. If it was a better day, he would have searched for you and gave a cheeky wink that usually made your face flush. That wasn't the case today though because he knew as soon as he locked eyes with you that he'd lose the semblance of composure that he's tried to keep all day.
As soon as his matches started it was like his body moved on autopilot. A Jab* here. ‘Come on Ace, you can do better than that,’ he thought to himself. A Cross* there. Thud! Somebody was gonna be feeling that when they woke up. The more people that went against him, the more powerful his punches became. His thoughts were getting the better of him, he didn’t even notice the heat that was emitting from his hands. ‘Is that all the Fire Fist Ace has to offer? Pathetic.’ Consumed in his thoughts, Ace didn’t notice the danger that was rapidly approaching him.
Suddenly a firm hand gripped his shoulder and whirled him around. He was met with the furious eyes of the first division commander. That seemed to snap him back to reality. An angry Marco meant that he fucked up. He looked down at his bloody fists. When did that happen? He could faintly hear Marco giving him a lecture but, as he raised his head he surveyed the scene around him. Members of his division were sporting bloody noses, black eyes or burn marks. Did he do all that?
Ace rubbed the back of his neck in embarrassment and conjured up a sheepish smile. “My bad? Guess I got lost in thought and didn't pull my punches.” He tried to laugh it off but the laughter died in his throat when no one laughed with him. If anything that just pissed Marco off more.
“What has gotten into you today?! You took it too far today. Do you know how many people I’m seeing with broken bones and burn marks? You know you're not supposed to use powers for hand to hand sparring, Ace. Get your shit together or I'll tell Pops.”
His body tensed and he knew that it was his fault that so many people had injuries that could have been easily avoided. The feeling of guilt was overwhelming. ‘Why can't I get a grip?’ He couldn’t take much more from today. “I’m sorry for my actions” Ace bowed to the remaining stragglers and then his feet acted before he even realized he was moving. All he had to do was make it to his room before someone stopped him.
On his way to the cabins, he passed you. No words came out of his mouth though. He’d already embarrassed himself enough today. He knew you’d seen the whole thing. The concern written across your face meant that he would be expecting a visit from you soon. Well, better that you come to check on him instead of Pops. Then he’d really wish that the sea would swallow him whole.

You arrived at his door only a few minutes after him. You raised your hand and gently rapped against the wood. “Ace? Do you wanna talk?” you called.
Silence followed. You frowned and tried to open his door. It didn't budge and a locked door was never a good sign. You weren't leaving without a fight though.
“I’m giving you five minutes to open this door before I start trying to pick the lock.” you huffed before sliding to the ground. You brought your knees to your chest and leaned against his door before calling out again. “I’ll be right here waiting but I'm not gonna leave you alone until you talk to me, Portgas.”
About a minute passed before you heard shuffling and a thunk as another body pressed against the door from the other side. “You don’t have to waste your time, you know, I'm fine, really.” Ace stressed out.
You hated when he did this, acting like he’s fine when you know he’s far from it. He’d rather let himself drown than have someone throw him a line. “We both know that what just came out of your mouth is total bullshit. Now would you save us some time and let me in? I was serious about the five minutes and would you look at that, you have one minute left.” you started counting down from sixty.
As soon as you got to thirty, you heard the lock click. You were at twenty when the door finally opened. You looked up from your spot on the ground to see a look of despair on Ace’s face. That was not a look that belonged on his face. You got up from your spot and faced him. His hat was missing as well as his belts, shoes, and his knife. You waited for him to speak first but he was doing the same. It became a stand off to see who would make the first move. Knowing that he was as stubborn as an ass, you caved first and brought him in for a hug.
Ace didn’t move for a moment. All he could focus on were your arms around his neck. He had to stay strong. You couldn't see how weak he really was. But you brought his face into the crook of your neck and he wavered. Technically you couldn't see his face and you smelled so good, so he let his guard down. You felt him relax against you so you shuffled the both of you forward and removed one arm from around him to pull his door shut.
When he heard the door shut, he felt his remaining walls crumble down. He felt the burn as he tried to hold his tears back. If he started crying he didn’t know if he would ever stop. So instead he wrapped his arms around you and held on as if his life depended on it. Ace felt your hand move to his hair, you weaved your fingers through his dark strands and you held him as if he’d drift away. Neither of you said anything or moved for some time.
Ace finally pulled away but kept his arms firmly around you. Your hands fell to cradle his face, to keep his eyes on you and to catch any stray tears that would fall. The silence broke as you spoke first. “Do you wanna talk about it? It would probably help to not bottle it up.” You stroked his cheek as you spoke. “I promise whatever it is will stay between you and me, not even Deuce is gonna pry this from me.” That got a smile out of him. You and Deuce were like long lost twins, you told each other everything.
“Today…I’ve felt like every bad thought that has ever crossed my mind was on repeat, at max volume. It was like I was a kid again, before my brothers came into the picture. Over the years, the thoughts drifted into the back of my mind, I found people who made them all but forgotten.” He closed his eyes and put his hands over yours, leaning into your touch.
“Sometimes though, like today, they come back in full force. And I feel so alone. Like I’m not Portgas D. Ace, second division commander of the whitebeard pirates. Like I'm just the worthless child of that bastard, who doesn't even deserve to live.” With that, the dam breaks and tears flood down his face. Shoulders shaking as sobs, he buries his face back into the crook of your neck. You continue to hold him and move your hand back to his hair and continue soothing strokes that you hoped would calm him.
You move the both of you to his bed and he is all but glued to your side. He follows your movements until the both of you are in a comfortable embrace on the edge of his bed. You pull back and hold his face, leaning forward until your forehead meets his. “I need you to look at me, Ace. I need to see that you’re listening to me and hearing me.” He met your eyes and nodded.
“You absolutely deserve to live. Your mother carried you for 20 months so that you would have a chance to live. Who cares that you are the biological son of the most famous pirate? I don’t. The Spades wouldn’t. The Whitebeards mostly wouldn’t. Your brothers didn't and Pops sure as hell didn't care either. We care about you. You, Portgas D. Ace, who is one of the kindest souls that I've had the pleasure of meeting. You are so strong a-and i don’t know where I would be without you.” Now you were the one starting to get emotional. “I-People love you Ace. You don’t have to believe me now but I don't want you to forget that. Okay? You. Are. Loved”
The rest of the day went by with you muttering reassurances into his ears while you both cuddled in his bed. His head fell against your chest and you knew he had finally given into his narcolepsy. You stayed with him the entire time, not wanting him to be alone when he woke up. Besides, he was really warm. You could feel yourself grow drowsy and soon fall into a peaceful slumber.

BONUS:
When neither of you showed up for dinner. Marco took it upon himself to fetch the both of you. Thatch also decided to tag along with a tray of food. Just because Ace caused a bit of chaos that afternoon didn't mean that the both of you needed to miss dinner. “You know, I bet that they actually get together within a month.” Thatch remarked as the duo made their way into the cabins.
“Nah, I’d give it until the end of the year. Have you met them? They’re for sure the slow burn type.”
They made it infront of Ace’s door and Marco took it upon himself to make their presence known. “Yoi! Ace, open up! We have dinner since you decided to hole yourself in here for the night.”
Thatch squinted at the blond. “Why do you know the term slow burn?”
“What? I read.” Marco shrugged and knocked on the door again but louder. Thatch made a face and made a note to bring that back up later. Who knew Marco the Phoenix liked romance books.
Deciding that it was too silent on the other side, Marco went ahead and opened the door. The scene before them made them rethink when you two would end up together. “Did I say the end of the month? I meant the end of the week.” Thatch wished he had a den den mushi camera at that moment.
You both were asleep on the bed. You were on your back with your arms wrapped around Ace, who was basically on top of you with his head on your chest and arms wrapped around your waist. It was almost too cute. Thatch quietly put the tray of food down on Ace’s desk. Meanwhile, Marco found a discarded blanket on the floor and used it to cover the both of you.
He was glad his little brother was having a better night than the no good, very bad day he had. Thatch looked on the verge of tears himself. So before Thatch could make a ruckus and wake them up, Marco dragged him out and softly closed the door behind them. He put his finger to his lips and gestured with his head to go back to the mess hall. Thatch nodded and shoved his hands in his pockets.
“So……... have you read any good romance novels lately?”
“Shut up, Thatch.”
