Harriet and M15 were not about to give up on their nesting season and the opportunity to add to their majestic species.  In their true spirit of persistence and devotion, they succeeded in presenting their second clutch, Egg 3 and Egg 4. Harriet and M15 selflessly executed another round of incubating their treasured Eggs. They have extended their season well into the hotter months of the year and brave the seemingly unbearable conditions to continue on their mission.

Harriet and M15 watched and listened as Egg 3 showed signs of hatching. The first great challenge for the Eaglets started a few days before a hole or PIP became evident on the shell. From that point, the process may take 48 hours or longer as in these cases.  Much strength and energy are exerted by chick with resting time in between efforts to break out of their shell. E15  hatched on 3-31-2020 at 5:29 am. Egg 4 had a PIP that very morning and E16 hatched on 4-2-2020 at 6:48 pm. The little miracles E15 and E16 made their grand entrances into the world.

Harriet and M15 began the nourishment and enrichment of their feisty E15 and E16 who are very active and energetic. They began to establish a so-called pecking order right out of the shell. Their vigorous tussles will serve them well as they grow and learn survival skills to last their lifetimes. These timeless miracles never cease to enthrall all who observe. The Bald Eagle has long been celebrated by humankind for their strength, wisdom, hope, courage, and loyalty.  They have been held in reverence by many religions and cultures as an integral part of their traditions and spirituality. Magnificent flights take the Eagle to the highest heights among and above the clouds. This ability has been believed to create balance in their lives, allowing powerful vision while keeping a strong connection to the earth. Their survival commands them to live life in the moment and adapt to unforeseen circumstances. They fearlessly focus on the continuation of their species and are deeply devoted to their mates and offspring. 

E14 was a bright and joyful addition to Harriet and M15’s world, and over these few short weeks captured the hearts of all. E14 was an intelligent and energetic Eaglet with a lot to peep about. Harriet and M15 took exceptional care of their cherished baby. In the blink of an eye, it became obvious that E14 sustained an injury resulting in blood loss. Harriet stood by E14 on the nest and M15 checked on them every so often. It seemed as if they knew something was not quite right with their precious little one.  E14 made the final journey to the Great Eagle Spirit in the early morning hours on Wednesday, January 15. Harriet and M15 continue nurturing E14 on their fast track of growing strong and tall. Close to 4 weeks old, E14’s wingspan is nearly 2 feet and their little tail wiggles at almost 2 inches long. Upward and outward is the direction of E14’s stature as they are over a foot tall, weighing 5 to 6 pounds with a beak and feet that are almost fully grown. E14 is now able to be viewed from the ground with head and wings at times above the nest rails. Sleep and nourishing food deliveries by Mom and Dad enable great growth spurts. E14 excels in all areas under the care of devoted Eagle parents.

E14 has accomplished many milestones and is working on more. E14 gains balance and strength scooting around the nest and taking a few steps. Getting control of their big feet and scratching an itch is a welcome benefit. E14 preens their new thermal down which encourages the progression of juvenile feathers beginning to emerge. E14 slept in the nest overnight by themselves with Mom and Dad perched above keeping a watchful eye on their not so little baby.

E14 curiously explored the nest looking for items of interest. E14 picked up and moved sticks and nesting with their beak and nibbled on food items imitating Mom and Dad.  E14 bravely slept on the nest rails enjoying the cooler breezes. Time spent there builds courage and allows E14 to learn the boundaries. Moving into the next growth period, E14 will gain more strength to begin standing and walking upright. They will start to engage the coordination of their feet and beak for self-feeding. E14 flap, flap, flaps their spreading wings as they build muscles for a future flight. In a few short weeks, E14 will be close to adult size. Harriet and M15 focus on enriching their sprouting E14 keeping them safe, secure and satiated as they head upward and onward. Nesting Seasons each unfold in unique ways. There have been many successful outcomes and many that were faced with challenges. Nature at times can be harsh and other times be very satisfying to observe. Season 7 has been very rewarding and inspiring. Harriet and M15 nurtured and nourished their precious Eaglets over the months to become skilled and intelligent Juvenile Eagles, readying them to be off on the next chapter of Eagle Life.

E13 eagerly learned the art of the steal in securing food and found their inner fierceness standing their ground. E13 gained the courage and confidence to make the decision to start life as a Juvenile out in the big world well prepared for survival. The last sighting of E13 was April 25.

E12 pushed the limits of their stay in the territory lingering a while longer. Mom and Dad’s patience and perseverance provided sustenance for E12 while practicing hunting by chasing the crows to steal their food. E12 was also mastering fishing using perfect form while sweeping the surface of the ponds.  E12’s vigor and spirit carried them to the wild beyond and was last seen on May 16.

Harriet and M15 may have a sense of great accomplishment and pride in their grand endeavor rearing two amazingly energetic and impressive Juvenile Eagles. They make their transition from the constant focus on their offspring to renewing and refreshing themselves and their unfailing bond to each other. They take time in the mornings to add sticks and materials to the nest and to make sure their valuable real estate is secure. They laze away the warm days perched in shady places and feast on abundant food. Harriet and M15’s well-deserved hiatus will energize and invigorate them for the next Season. Under the watchful eye of the Great Eagle Spirit may The Eagle Family be protected and the new chapters be fruitful.

Harriet and M15 execute perfectly timed exchanges almost like a dance as one leaves the nest and the other arrives. They have become an efficient incubating team. There were a few cooler evenings and breezy days over the week that required continual brooding of their Eggs. It may seem as if those hours spent on the nest are tedious ones but Harriet and M15 instinctively time the moments they rise up to roll the Eggs keeping the developing Chicks at an even temperature. M15 delivered beak and talons full of grasses and moss to the nest and they each work the new materials in making the nest bowl fluffy and fresh. He also brought a large air plant for Harriet which provided many hours of entertainment for them moving it from place to place as they incubated.

Harriet and M15 are on constant watch and sound the alert to any unwanted passers-by. They make their presence known to the neighboring Eagle pair. Many times when Harriet and M15 fly off to the boundaries of their territory they cause a scattering of egrets and other birds in their flight plan. At other times they have been observed soaring the skies with vultures and wood storks. M15 delivered fish and a squirrel for Harriet which she devoured quickly as he incubated.  M15 was observed eating on one of the snag trees and arrived at the nest tree another evening sporting a very well filled crop. More food will be delivered to the nest as hatching time nears. Harriet savors her time of renewal as an active and successful nesting season winds down. She can be found at times perching in the far reaches of the territory enjoying a meal, relaxing and preening.  Her sights are still set on preservation of the home front as she makes occasional appearances and delivers sticks or fresh pine boughs to her nest. Harriet has selflessly given of herself and is the mainstay that holds her family together.  She reigns over her domain with control and fierceness balanced with nurturing and tenderness. Mutual devotion between her and her mate M15 provide abundance and security to ensure their offspring will flourish. Harriet inspires and trusts M15 and they work together as a finely tuned team.

Every season unfolds in unique ways presenting everyday occurrences and challenges. Harriet’s strong resolve allows her to persevere and endure whatever comes her way. She exudes confidence and acceptance in the face of adversity. Her beauty radiates in calmness. She is ever present to attend to the needs of her family with courage, strength and intuition. E10 and E11 are accomplishing quite a list of milestones reached. Their strength and balance have multiplied and they are standing tall while walking around the nest. Their trips to the edge to watch the big wide world have drawn many gasps from onlookers.  Windy days allows the unfolding of mighty wings, feeling the lift from the air and performing small hops while “wingercizing”. Two healthy Eaglets with wings out and flapping leaves little room for much else.  E11 was first to self-feed with E10 quickly following suit. Both track Mom and Dad’s flight into the nest and greet them with loud vocal “squees”.  E11 rushed to a food delivery, grabbed the prey from Dad and performed a mantle, which is spreading wings over food to protect it.  E11 was not sharing and played keep away from E10. Good lessons on getting your fish and eating it too! Soon, meals will be dropped and left for E10 and E11 to battle over. Also good practice for stealing and keeping food when in the wild.

E10 seems to be more interested in stick moving and nest building. Both have been carrying nest items from place to place. E11 took a liking to Mom’s bromeliad plant moving it and tearing it apart. Harriet and M15 continue to add sticks and grasses to the nest as E10 and E11 delight in breaking it down. The once tall nest rails that confined little Eaglets are mostly nonexistent. 

Coming weeks will show more progress and advancement in E10 and E11’s development. More milestones will be achieved under the careful guidance and care from exceptional Eagle parents. E10 and E11 will grow taller and stronger. Nest Notes by dadsjazz.Header

The weeks seem to fly by so to speak as E10 and E11 gain height, weight, juvenile feathers, wingspan, appetites and the beginnings of engaging in Eagle behaviors. The distinguishing characteristics are so minimal that it is hard to tell one from the other at times. E10, as the first hatched seems to be slightly ahead of E11, standing for longer periods of time, walking across the nest and starting to use those big feet to hold onto items and tear them apart. E11 is on the same track. They have been observing Mom and Dad arriving with sticks and grasses. Both Es have been practicing moving nest material, carrying sticks from one place to the other and even setting them on each other and on the rails. Their awareness is heightened as they track the skies above watching for flying objects and other birds. They curiously peer over the edge of the nest watching the activity below but their inborn sense of fear helps keep them within the boundaries. Expanding wings are growing stronger with each flap, flap, flap and they will soon be getting some lift from the breezes. In a few short weeks, they will be nearly the size of Mom and Dad. Family dinner time on the nest is getting crowded. Harriet makes sure her big babies are secure spending the nights with them in the nest or just perched above. During recent wind and rain, Mom stayed to offer some shelter and comfort. Dad is never far away and sets his sights on protecting his family. Harriet and M15’s foremost focus is their precious Es but they also take time to strengthen their bond and commitment to each other.

M15 is a masterful hunter and seems to take every opportunity to find a meal for his growing family. He and Harriet have kept the food coming in large quantities. The menu has been a variety of fish large and small along with selections of feathered and furry items.  Dad enjoys feeding E10 and E11, however, Mom takes the role of managing most of the feedings. Harriet seems to encourage her offspring to be aggressive at meal times and even though E10 and E11 have rarely known hunger, they eagerly vie for their share. They pick through the “nestovers” looking for morsels and are stealing from each other. These behaviors will prove invaluable in their quest for food when they are on their own. More activities, progress and lessons are on the horizon for these two dark beauties.
