Animal attacks aren’t the norm in public parks. A child torn apart, that’s even stranger. Some motivated investigator remembered hearing about an attack under similarly odd circumstances in the news a while back in a different town, the case was strange enough to change hands until someone asked her to look into it. There’s a man in the park in question who’s been there for a bit, so she sits down next to him. It’s worth finding out whether he’s seen anything strange.
“This is a dangerous place to spend time lately. Haven’t you heard the news?”

Darkness is a strange thing. Some kinds of darkness feel empty, some kinds feel full. Some kinds are comforting, but some are frightening. Black eyes--though more accurately, most of them are just extremely dark brown--are no different.
The man is sitting on a bench in a park, people-watching. Joey’s no stranger to this; it’s something he does regularly as well. Rama’s eyes are the type of black that’s full of things you can’t quite make out. The frightfully mysterious kind. Glimmering like a cat’s coat right after it’s been well-groomed, they are eyes that take in everything and let out very little.
Looking at his eyes, Joey hears a panther’s growl, but the actual danger is hidden by shadows. Twisted branches covered in black moss fill the depths of Rama’s eyes, a mist rolls in. A polluted soul--someone has mangled the person Rama is supposed to be. There’s sorrow, buried behind the sheen of detachment.
Some darkness hides things. Some darkness, however, reveals things. And when Rama glances up and the light plays off his eyes, there’s a moon in the forest, illuminating the shiny coat of the panther.
He is not fully lost yet.
