as someone who sweeps for a living I love and respect your street sweeper character and I sometimes think of him when I twirl my broom
😁 That makes me very happy. I daresay he would be flattered to know it too.

Who's your favorite character to write? Do you have one who's a bastard that simply won't leave you alone?
Oh man, so many! They're great imaginary friends. I got through some boring classes in college by picturing what my characters would do in the room. (Have difficulty fitting in the human-shaped chairs, cavort invisibly behind the professor, be obsessed with how the projector worked.)
The ones that have stuck with me the longest are probably Hess from Sweeping Changes, Kaz from that-book-I-haven't-published-yet, and Hubcap from Spectacular Silver Earthling (which I hope to publish soonish).
And of course whoever I'm writing at the moment tends to live in my head. Right now I'm fond of Sandspeed the dragon who works as a school librarian, and Jenrietta the human(ish) teacher. Their world is a fun one.
Highly specific character question: Barring spoilers, what influenced the development of Hess's character after the initial inspiration? And which of his scenes did you most look forward to writing?
Great question! The character development for Hess in Sweeping Changes came pretty easily. I'm sure I've said somewhere before that the original idea came from the lyrics of Viva La Vida:
I used to rule the world Seas would rise when I gave the word But now I sleep alone Sweep the streets I used to own
When I started exploring the idea of a street sweeper who used to be someone far more important, I did it by writing a bunch of little short stories.
Most of those got to later be flashback scenes in the actual book, which I love! It worked out so well.
And the scene I looked forward to most might be the one where he takes down an assassin. That sort of thing is always fun. Though I did enjoy the big reveals too. Thanks for asking!
Life goal achieved!
Today I went into Barnes & Noble, found the book I wrote on the shelf, and signed all five copies. All stealthy like. Certain that someone would exclaim that I was defacing books. But no! I signed them, added bookmarks, and put them back on the shelf, facing out.
Then I tracked down an employee and asked about doing a reading/signing event.
And they said yes. The person in charge of events should be getting back to me soon.
*happydance, flinging confetti*
I also opened a new savings account for Book Money, and bought new work pants, since I’ve been promoted at my day job and should look the part.
Today is a good day!
Behold, I am something akin to a professional! I’ve been interviewed on TV!
And this NaNoWriMo, I’m working on the sequel. All very exciting.
*happy dance*
