Playing sw4e and seeing this event, reminded me about real Takatora and his view on drinking. Takatora lived a pretty frugal life and while there are accounts that he drank alcohol (Masamune: let’s drink again~), he was very strict with people who were heavy drinkers and wasn’t in favour of heavy and violent drinking.

“Fine clothes and heavy drinking are unnecessary expenses. If you drink too much, you’ll become sick. If that becomes a cause of death, even if there’s a child of an age, he will not be allowed to succeed family headship and the family assets will be confiscated.” (1609)

Also in one of his “family precepts” (fyi Todo Takatora left 200 family precepts to his descendants on how to be a samurai, how to act towards your retainers, to your lord, stuff about hobbies, travelling etc. Also use of hand towels~) he says:

“You must not drink heavily. If there’s a situation where you have to drink at a dinner party, you must refrain from doing things. Say goodbye before you get into a heavy argument.” (no. 61)
