Honestly I haven't watched Suzhal in forever. So my memories a bit rusty! But I feel like after watching it I remember absolutely loving it, but feeling a bit disappointed at different parts of it.

I remember when it was first released I was so excited because so many streamers were anthologies, and this felt like the first Tamil show that wasn't. I also absolutely loved was the small town/village feels of the show and the religious mania. That was so much fun and the overall vibes of the show as sooo good. The way the show was filmed really added to the overall vibes and was so much fun. I am also a huge fan of the detective genre, but like others have said, I prefer private eye detective stories over police detective (because copaganda). However, I do think one of the things about Suzhal is it does kinda balance the too. Obviously there is still copaganda, but the entire narrative is very critical of the police, so I loved it. Especially since soooo much of Kollywood films are sooooo copaganda, its not even funny. The other thing I loved is the inclusion of the trans characters, that was soo much fun. And really love so much of the commentary about that.!

However, there were parts of it that I remember not liking. I remember thinking the pacing was off. I also remember HATING the fact that Nila and her boyfriend were pretending that he was harassing her/abusing her. The entire show is about sexual violence, so, to have one of the most important plot twists be "this character is pretending to be a victim of sexual/gendered violence" is all sorts of fucked up. I really think that they should have made Nila gay. It would have flowed so much better in my opinion. Oh, and I hated that Harish Uthaman character forgave the police/main characters for beating it up.

The only other things I can remember is that I didn't like the score, it really took away from the more emotional scenes. The show needed quieter scenes to build the anxiety of the investigation, and the emotional scenes. And that SO many of the romantic relationships weren't developed well. Including Sakkarai and Nandini which really sucked for me because I love Kathir and Aishwarya Rajesh and from BTS info, we know they are friends.

But overall I really love the show! And I am super excited for season 2. The fact that we are seeing the show be set next to the kaṭal is soooo exciting. And I am really excited for what this will mean for the religious elements of the narratives. I also hope that they give Kathir and Aishwarya Rajesh's better material to work with in terms of their relationship.
