I decided to keep the rental van an extra day and to drive 100 miles to re-attempt catching a Suwannee Bass so I could get the requisite 5 qualifying bass for the Georgia Bass Slam. First I went to the Statenville Boat ramp on the Alapaha River. I had zero luck at this place after 1.5 hours of hard fishing in multiple different styles. The fish just weren’t there. This was the third location I tried to catch a Suwannee Bass at with no success. I then headed for the ramp on 31st accrosss from the Florida border. One more hour of fishing produced nothing. I persuaded a kind a flat-bottom river boat guy to give me a lift to a better spot. After he was done he picked me up an hour later and refused to accept a tip for his help.
Due to this stranger’s kindness I was able to find a spot to catch an elusive wintertime Georgia Suwannee bass!
What a beautiful and unique dark bass with orange tint in the sunshine. These fish don’t get very big so an 11 inch Suwannee is a prize catch and also over the requisite 8 inches making my Georgia Bass Slam attempt complete.
5 species in 3 days (72 hours) from NOV 1 in the afternoon to NOV 4 in the afternoon.
What a beautiful wintertime activity.
