Sad Days in the Life of Tilapia
4/1514Â
4:00 pm arrive
People:Â Wendy and Julianna
Weather: Sunny and 61 degrees F. What a lie--it was in the 40s in the morning. Since Sunday, there has been a dramatic drop in temperature.
Status:Â The water in the sump is a little lower from wind and evaporation, but it's acceptable.Â
We had emergency transplanted three garlic sprouts into the media bed because these sprouts were on the cusp of death. It would seem that one of the three will make it.
Fish Corner: The fish are not happy. They're basically catatonic and will not move unless poked multiple times with a stick. And even then, their movement was extremely limited. When we had first opened the lid to the tank, all of the fish were huddled in the crevices of the corner posts in the tank. There would be 3-5 fish huddled in each crevice.Â
We could not tell until we poked each fish repeatedly that three were dead. Then it became a matter of fishing them out with a stick and burying them. Â
The water is REALLY cold! Water Temp: 58 degrees F.
The fish will not eat. We're hoping they will return to normal when this Texas weather evens out and warms up again. Tilapia are originally an African fish and are happiest in the heat. Since the water tests all turned up pretty balanced, we're banking on their deaths being temp related.Â
Water Tests: pH 6.7; Ammonia 0.5ppm; Nitrite 0ppm; Nitrate 5ppm
5:05 pm depart
One makes you fat, the other saves money. This is a no-brainer.
