I think a lot about Purity Cartone's command word of 'suspire' and what it means to breathe, to sigh. There's a point to how Baru uses it nearly literally for him to talk and tell or keep secrets, but also the less literal release to action. Purity gets to breathe and in breath he gets to act.
But then I think about Iscend and her word of 'gaios' and wonder what a port on the Greek island of Paxos named for one of the disciples of Paul means in the world of Baru Cormorant. Because there's a difference in using a word to communicate an idea versus using a name to communicate an idea.
I truly have no clue what I'm saying here, but you get the point, right? What meaning does 'Gaios' carry in The Masquerade?
