âI was riding a bicycle through my neighborhood in Little Italy nearly thirty-five years ago. Suddenly, a blast of light flashed into my eyes. Its source was a group of kids standing with a mirror, focusing the sun on my face, nearly blinding me. That was the day I met the Prince Street Girls, the name I gave the group that hung out on the nearby corner almost every day. I was the stranger who didnât belong. Little Italy was mostly for Italians then.â Susan Meiselas ââ This summer I discovered her photography in CO Berlin while delivering a package to museum and only today read the full story behind âPrince street girlsâ đ¤ #sundayart #magnumphotos #susanmeiselas #princestreetgirls https://www.instagram.com/p/ClLiFdoMLjM/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Forthcoming in May from @steidlverla & @coberlin 'Susan Meiselas: Carnival Strippers â Revisited' is reviewed @bjp1854â â @hannahabelhirsch writes: @susanmeiselas began working on her series 'Carnival Strippers' five decades ago, soon after turning 24. The year was 1972, and the photographer met a dark-haired stripper in the bathroom of a country fair. It was an encounter that âled to a journey of many returns,â as Meiselas describes it, and arguably one of the most significant photographic projects of the second half of the 20th century, which helped earn Meiselas membership to @magnumphotosâ â The making of 'Carnival Strippers' spanned four years and 15 different locations across Americaâs rural east coast as Meiselas followed the carnivals from town to town, documenting the lives of the dancers on stage and off. In 1976, the photographer collated the work into the historical photobook 'Carnival Strippers,' re-released in 2003.â â 'Carnival Strippers Revisited' marks the third edition of the book. It comprises two separate publications: a revised version of Carnival Strippers complete with previously unpublished photographs, and a companion volume, 'Making Of,' which provides an insight into the workâs creation. âFor decades, no one has looked at the box from which this collection of archival materials came,â writes Meiselas in one of the texts. âViewing it now, I can remember the endless hours leading from months into a year, transcribing words by hand, excerpting quotes from many conversations onto file cards, then sitting on the floor and weaving those cards between images to create a narrative context.ââ â 'Making Of' provides an unprecedented insight into this process, comprising work prints, proofs with printer annotations, contact sheets, pages from Meiselasâ handwritten field notebook, selected correspondence with the projectâs subjects, quotes from initial historical research, and typed transcriptions of extensive audio recordings.âŚ"â â Read the full review via linkinbio.â â #susanmeiselas #susanmeiselascarnivalstrippers #carnivalstrippers #photobook https://www.instagram.com/p/CdBCYGtOJX3/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
