Words do not attempt to describe visual images; words create them. Words make love; images are born from their latent sympathies and magnetic properties. Like a living organism, language has its own biochemistry, its own metabolism....The writer’s joy is that of being the unwitting but willing agent of happy coincidences, of discovering the marvelous not in oneself but in the images created by the random, unforeseen concatenation of words.
