This is a picture book recounting a folk tale in which a whale and sand piper fight over which one of them has more of a right to the shore. I am counting this as my book for The Marshall Islands for my Read the World Challenge because it's the only narrative book about them that I can get from my library, but I plan to read Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner's poetry and nonfiction as well to really fulfill the prompt, both because this is such a small book and because MacDonald is a white woman and I don't want her defining my literary exposure to the islands.

This was cute! I didn't particularly love the art, but the actual story is a charming folk tale with morals of conflict resolution, mindfulness of your impact on others, and environmentalism. I also thought it was cute that the end note said it's often told as a bedtime story where parents would list every bird and sea creature they could think of until the children fell asleep.
