predictions and superstitions
my husband had three potential Big Sporting Moments coming into this year:
it was a Euros year, so there was a chance England would win
his first love, his hometown football team, could be promoted back into league football (so from the national league back into League Two of the English league)
the Mets could do Something
the first thing that happened earlier this year was that his hometown football club comfortably clinched promotion before the end of the season. i got him some bottles of Highlife ("the champagne of beers!") to celebrate the day it happened, and then i said,
"this is though. England won't win the Euros and the Mets won't win the World Series. you get one thing a year."
when England made it to the finals of the Euros, I was like, maaaybe instead of getting just one thing, he gets all the things. i was briefly very excited, but then England did as England does and the world returned to what it was.
the Mets were in their slump when most of this all happened (the Euros finale was on June 14, Grimace threw the first pitch on June 12), so I felt vindicated.
but in 2025
It's not a World Cup year or a Euros year
promotion for the hometown club would be fun but now that they're back in the English league they're fine
the Mets could do Something
