I always do a lot of character work, making sure i know all of their objectives and superobjectives, but it always seems to fly out the window when I go on stage and i lose all sense of a developed character. Do you have any tips?
I'm torn here. I'm a firm believer of leaving the work at the door--meaning do all that work, do all that analysis, but live honestly in the moment. I definitely understand what you mean, though, and I think that's a common issue with a lot of actors. I think the point of all that analysis is to make discoveries and to keep far away from generalizations, but when you're actually performing, you don't want to get too caught up in, "Wait, what did I write down in my notebook? What was my tactic here?" So I don't really have any other tips other than keep doing all that work, and then live honestly on stage. Let it inform your work, allow yourself to make discoveries, but don't get too caught up in those details.
