Supercaan - The Great North Eastern

It’s not often that a band can drum up the sort of flattering commotion and deserved praise that Supercaan has obtained with but one single. The five member group from Birmingham and London made a gale-force entrance when they released their debut song The Bull earlier this year, landing themselves on Hype Machine’s most popular playlist and capturing the attention of savvy music aficionados all around. The Bull was even featured on BBC6 Introducing, where Tom Robinson described it as “motoring atmospheric psychedelia”. It may seem like Supercaan sprung out of nowhere all of a sudden, but Greg Milner, Stuart White, and Tom Whitfield, with Justin Januszewski and Ralph Frost joining for live shows, have been writing and demoing their self-titled debut album over a four year period at weekends in lock ups, attics, bedrooms, and living rooms before recording it with Simon Weaver (Free School, Goodnight Lenin, Victories at Sea, Matters & Lions of Dissent) in his basement studio. The band is now ready to set their eponymous album loose on the world, and they’ve announced an April 26th release date for its arrival.  With this welcome news comes Supercaan’s second single, The Great North Eastern. The powerfully rousing song is a voluminously driving guitar anthem, with angular post-punk atmospherics and a widescreen aesthetic reminiscent of the Editors, kneaded with Echo and the Bunnymen’s dark curves and The National’s deep, plangent brooding. The Great North Eastern is a song both crashing melodious and blazing visceral. It’s a moonlit pyre fit for a fevered night ride. You drive and you drive, and you never stop driving, so you can elude your cursed demons. But as exhilarating as the jailbreak is, you find yourself right back where you started.

Supercaan states that their staggering new track is about how a night out with old friends takes us back to being the person we thought we had escaped. “Put a brave face on it, It’s happening again”. Their official video for the song was shot and directed by Nick Bennett (Hand Built Films) and choreographed by Polly Hudson. It features contemporary dancers Shelley Eva Haden & Oliver Robert Russell.
