One of the major worries for owners of wooden barns is destruction caused by pesky termites. The most common type of termites includes the Asian Termites and Formosan Termites. Both species tend to live in areas with warmer climates. Scientists have recently discovered a new species of termite that is a hybrid of both the Asian and Formosan termite. The Asian termite can only live in tropical areas, while the Formosan can live almost anywhere. Researchers are worried that this new super termite will be able to cover much, much more land than the two termites it is deriving from. This new termite does not have a name yet, but will be able to take on colder climates. Being able to withstand cold climates, this super termite will most likely expand to the north eastern parts of the United States. Asian Termite

Asian Termites are subterranean, meaning they live completely underground. They feed on our houses and barns, or anything else made of wood. The Asian Termite is incredibly hard to exterminate and causes thousands of dollars of damage each year. Since we have been experiencing warmer temperatures, these termites are expected to move further and further up the coast to places that were normally too cold for the termite to visit.

Formosan Termite

Before the combination of the Asian Termite and Formosan Termite, the Formosan Termite was known as the super termite. They were known as super termites due to their ability to destruct. Each year they cause about 100 million dollars in damage in Hawaii. These termites can be found anywhere on the planet besides Antarctica. They are already a major problem in the U.S. so we need to prepare for the interbreeding between the Formosan and Asian Termites.
