As a person whose relationship with death has been peripheral at best, Carlos has never had much cause to think about whether he’s afraid or not. He doesn’t have a bucket list as much as a to-do list; like a teenager, he sees himself as almost immortal, invincible, though if anything were to change that perception, to get underneath that skin, it might change the way he’s forced to conceptualize a lot of the things in his life.

His cat allergy means he’s tended towards more non-traditional pets throughout his life. Why would you buy a dog when you can have a lizard or a venus flytrap or a turtle or a jellyfish? Right now he has a tarantula named Dorothy. She has eight fuzzy legs, two chelicerae (no venom), and two pedipalpi. He likes showing her to his students. His students do not always like this.
