Moving the light is a key task in getting dramatic shots Light placement is equally important when using the largest of all lighting instruments: the sun. Although the sun isn’t easy for us mortals to move, we can still adjust its relationship to our subjects. One method is to choose the time for shooting—early morning vs. noon vs. evening Another option is to move the subject. In the example here—from mini-doc “Ice Swimming” by Robb Montgomery (@robbmonty)—the director placed the subject between the camera and the setting sun. This resulted in a near-silhouette with a golden fringe. “Ice Swimming” won the Best Smartphone Film at the Sunlight International Film Festival.
