변사또야 사랑 참 부질없구나 니 눈물 알아 주는 이는 없구나 변사또야 춘향인 그만 잊거라 세월가도 변함없는 니가 참 가엽구나 남원의 한 마을 제일 가는 미녀 성춘향 이몽룡이라는 자와 사랑을 나눴으나 그는 과거시험을 준비하러 떠날수밖에 없었고 둘은 가슴아픈 생이별에 울었더라 그리고 그 춘향이를 애틋하게 바라봤던 이름은 학도 성은 변 잘나가는 마을의 사또 예전부터 그녀를 짝사랑했던 학도는 하루에 꼭 한번은 찾아가서 추파를 던졌더라 말을 타고 비단과 보석 가득 안고 그녈 만나러 갔으나 그녀는 쉽게 맘을 안꺼내놓고 튕겨 다른방법을 찾아 그녀를 초대 집을 한번 구경시키고나니 몇일뒤 말을 바꿔 그 품에 안겨 바람둥이로 소문난 이방의 코치를 받고 사랑을 얻은 학도는 그에게 상금을 내렸지 학도는 자기 진심을 알아줬다고 믿었고 춘향이는 새옷과 장신구를 끼며 행복했지 변사또야 사랑 참 부질없구나 니 눈물 알아 주는 이는 없구나 변사또야 춘향인 그만 잊거라 세월가도 변함없는 니가 참 가엽구나 신상 꽃신 비단 저고리 명나라 산으로 다 사드린 춘향이는 흐뭇했지 구름대신 변학도의 등골을 타고 하늘 높이 높이 날아오르곤했지 변학도는 그녀의 곁에서 노니는 것만으로도 종일을 행복에 겨워 넘치는 표정으로 가득했지 이몽룡이를 남원땅에서 다시 마주하기 전까지는 한양으로 떠났던 이몽룡이 장원급제 해 돌아왔단 소식을 듣게된 춘향이는 미소를 금새에 눈물로 바꿔 출세해 돌아온 몽룡의 곁으로 학도는 내버려 둔채에 몽룡의 급제 조차도 모르는 학돈 잠시 찬거릴 사러 장터에 다녀온다던 그녈 기다리던 중 대문밖 인기척에 나가보니 몽둥이를 든 왠 사내 무리들뿐 변사또야 사랑 참 부질없구나 니 눈물 알아 주는 이는 없구나 변사또야 춘향인 그만 잊거라 세월가도 변함없는 니가 참 가엽구나 갑작스럽게 맞딱뜨려 당황스런 학도는 대꾸할 틈도 없이 손이 묶여 맨땅에 무릎을 꿇고 납작 엎드려 벌벌 떨며 바짝 긴장한채 숨죽여 암행어사 출두요 떡하니 뒷짐을 진 몽룡이가 침을 튀며 저놈을 쳐라 외쳤다 춘향이는 눈치를 보며 슬쩍 몽룡이 옆으로 가서는 이내 쥐똥만한 눈물을 쥐어짜 억지로 수청을 들어 갇혀있었으나 오직 서방님 뿐이라며 거짓을 고해 먼지로 덮혀 맞고 있는 학도는 순간 춘향일 봤으나 그녀는 딱 잘라 그를 외면해 비단옷, 온갖 보석 또 꽃신하고 장신구 학도가 사준것들을 신이나서 몽룡에게 자랑을 하고 있는 춘향일 하염없이 바라보던 학도의 눈에선 눈물이 났어 계속된 매질에 정신 못 차리던 학돈 애석해하며 고개를 숙였고 이내 쓰러져 정신을 차리고 눈을 떴을 때 보인 것은 행복해 하며 걸어가는 두 남녀의 뒷모습 할말을 잃은 학도는 마냥 울었다 매질이 아파 우는게 아니라 더 슬펐다 제 사랑을 즈려밟고 간 춘향인데 그 뒷모습은 학도 눈엔 계속 아름다웠다

The most beautiful woman in a nawon village, Sung Chunhyang and a man called Yi Mongyong were in love but but he had to leave to prepare for the civil servant exam the two of them were hurt and cried for their lifelong separation and then a man of name Hakdo and surname Byun who had been watching her affectionately was a well-off lawyer of the village Hakdo who had had a crush on her for a long time went looking for her one day and ogled at her he got on a horse packed with silk and jewels and went to meet her but she didn’t give him her heart easily and resisted her looked for a different method and invited her to his house, and then after a few days she changed her words and held him he got advice from a rumored playboy from a different vialle Hakdo had won love and gave him money Hakdo believed he knew his true feelings Chunhyang wore new clothes and jewelry and was happy

New wedding shoes, silk Jeogori** Chunhyang had bought it all in the Ming Dynasty and was satisfied instead of getting on the clouds she got on Byun Hakdo’s back and used to go high high in the sky Byun Hakdo was full of expressions of overflowing happiness all day long just by wandering by her side until facing Yi Mongyong in Namwon again Yi Mongyong who had left for Hanyang*** won the first place in the examination Chunhyang heard the news about him coming back and soon changed her smile for tears and went by Mongyong’s side, who had succeeded and come back while being thrown away Hakdo didn’t even know about Mongyong passing the examination Chunhyang left for a moment to get groceries at the market while waiting for her outside of the gates with nobody around he went out carrying a club just a crowd of men

He appeared as an undercover emisary of the king with his hands behind his back Mongyong spat and yelled “hit those men!” Chunhyang considered the situation and furtively went in front of Mongyong and cried small tears against her will she became a mistress and was confined but lied and said her husband was the only man for her covered in dust, Hakdo looked at Chunhyang for a moment but she completely ignored him the silk clothes, all sorts of jewels and wedding shoes and the jewerly Hakdo had bought her made her excited so Hakdo, who had been looking endlessly at Chunhyang making Mongyong proud, cried in the beating that continued Hakdo couldn’t pull himself together regretted it, bowed his head and soon collapsed what he saw when coming to his senses and wiping his tears was the backs of a man and a woman being happy and walking away

At a loss of words Hakdo cried it wasn’t because the beating hurt, he was sadder Chunhyang, his love, had stepped on him and left her back kept being beautiful in Hakdo’s eyes

*Basically “lawyer Byun”. Satto is a local lawyer and judge, occupation of the character called Byun Hakdo in “Chunhyangjeon”, one of the most famous love stories in korean folklore. As far as I know in the original story he’s the antagonist, Chunhyang always rejects his advances for which he decides to punish her until Yi Mongyong comes back and saves her and they live happily ever after.
