Reinterpreting Predator
The architect Greg Lynn and the painter Fabian Marcaccio collaborated on an installation in 2001- with the claim to create a new hybrid between painting and architecture. They created the 'Predator'- an tubular space assembled out of vacuum formed transparent panels covered with 'digital painting on plastic foil' and painted with silicon paint. The effect is beautiful- like walking inside of a three dimensional painting. The division of tasks in the design process however appears to be very traditional- the architect creates the walls, the main structure, the space and the artist paints onto this predefined volume-hardly 'a new kind of hybrid'. Painting and architecture are a hybrid at least since the ancient Greeks colored their temples in vivid shades. Nevertheless The Predator stands at the beginning of a paradigm shift- what if it is not the architecture that comes first but the painting? Or what if it is not clear which one is the driving factor, the base and which one is 'applied'? Also newer software like Z-Brush or Mudbox allows 3d-artist to sculpt and paint architectural models simultaneously while they are creating them. No need to wait for the paint to dry while sculpting it.
