Godsmack - S/T
When I say I like certain albums or bands, I like them for different reasons, or I like them for one main reason. There are bands that I like for their vocalists, because the vocals are the best part of those bands / artists. There are artists whose lyrics I really like, even if everything else is either just good or okay. What I wanted to focus on today is when I like a bandās sound over anything else, and I have a good example of that right off the bat ā Godsmack. Iāve never talked about these guys, nor have I ever listened to them, but Iāve gotten curious to check them out through seeing their 1998 debut album at Walmart, so I decided to finally check it out. It was cheap, so why not, right? Iāve heard theyāre pretty good, especially this album, but I didnāt know much about them, other than that their debut is a seminal record within alt-metal, nu-metal, and hard-rock of the era.
After listening to the record a few times, Iām of the mind that I like this album a good bit, but mainly for their sound. I donāt really care for Sully Erna as a vocalist, and thatās not to say he sucks, but itās to say that he isnāt interesting. His vocals donāt quite fall flat, but he sounds like a poor manās Scott Stapp of Creed (Iāve got some Creed to talk about soon, too, and I canāt wait to do that). He has that gravely voice, but he just doesnāt do anything with it. He sounds the same on each song, and it just feels boring, but I donāt dislike it. There are some really cool riffs, solos, and moments on the album that make me engaged with it, but the vocals and lyrics donāt do much for me. I like listening to them, but I get more from the sound than any of the vocals or lyrics.
The albumās other biggest issue is how long it is; at 55 minutes, minus a couple minutes of silence that leads into a hidden track, it feels very bloated and longwinded. It ends up becoming kind of forgettable, at least within certain songs, and Iām just tired of the album, despite liking it fine. I just have other albums that I would rather be listening to, like those Creed albums, for example. Godsmackās self-titled debut is a good album, but itās not a great one. Itās an album that has kind of fallen to the wayside over time, as itās a bit dated. Itās not the bad kind of dated, but you can have a good idea of when this album was released, just from how the band sounds and how their vocalist sounds. I donāt know, folks; if you like 90s nu-metal and hard-rock, itās worth hearing, but you arenāt missing anything if you donāt bother to check it out.
Godsmack Rocked the Hell out of the Grand Theatre, and Frontman Sully stole everyone's heart with his Scars Foundation dedication stories. Check out my review and gallery on www.soundchecksf.com
