SugAsahi: Cuddle Birds
Suga woke up with a start, hearing something thud. He sat up straight on his futon and looked around, rubbing one eye free off sleep. Asahi was trying to quietly get back into his own futon and noticed Suga had woken up.
"Sorry, Suga! Did I wake you?" He whispered. He seemed so guilty, but something was off. Why was Asahi awake in the first place?
"It's fine Asahi. Why are you up?" Suga asked. Even in the dim lighting, he could see Asahi's face turn red. Suga carefully got up and walked around Daichi, still asleep, to sit with Asahi. "What's wrong?"
"It's fine, I can handle it. I don't want to sound like a kid." Asahi said stubbornly. Being closer, Suga could see how shakey he was and a thin layer of sweat was on his forehead. He reached up to touch his cheek to give him some comfort and the taller boy flinched, making Suga withdraw his hand quickly. "Ah, sorry, I didn't mean to, I mean I, well it's-"
"I get it. You had a nightmare and you aren't sure if you're awake or if it's still a bad dream." Suga said. Asahi nodded, swallowing nervously. Suga always figured him out so quickly, was he really that readable? The answer of course is no. Suga was just really in tune with his friend's emotions. "Do you want to talk about it?"Â
"No, not really. Sorry." Asahi apologized automatically. His hands flew up to tangle in his hair, knotting and pulling on the long brown strands. Suga gently pulled Asahi's hands from his hair and rubbed circles in his wrists.
"Asahi, you don't have to apologize. I don't mind you not saying, it's not my business to know what pains you in your sleep. That being said, however, I do care about you." Suga smiled and moved closer on the futon. "Do you want me to stay with you until you fall asleep?"
"Like I'm five?" He bit his lip. He hadn't meant to say that, it just slipped out. Curse his quick words! Was Suga mad at him? He glanced at him, but he didn't seem mad. He was smiling. "I'm sorry Suga, I didn't mean-"
"It's fine Asahi, I know you didn't mean it." Suga reached up and this time Asahi didn't flinch as he put his hand on the ace's cheek. "Were you crying?" He frowned with worry as he brought up his other hand to cup Asahi's face. "Asahi, were you crying?"
"Y-yeah. I know, it's stupid. It was just a nightmare, I'm acting like a kid." He had the urge to push Suga away, to curl up and bottle up his emotions again, hide his nightmares and his face, but he didn't. "I'm sorry."
"Stop apologizing. You didn't do anything wrong, okay?" Suga let go of Asahi's face to take hold of his hands again. Asahi nodded his agreement and stifled a yawn. Suga's smile returned and he let go of Asahi. "Let's get back in bed. It's late and we still have practice games tomorrow. I'll stay with you, okay? Just hold onto me and you'll be safe."
"Are you sure?" Asahi asked, worried. What if he hurt Suga in his sleep? Or crushed him? What if his nightmares somehow infiltrated his friend's sleep too? Or the nightmare came true and he-
"Asahi, I wouldn't offer if I was sure. Let me grab my pillow first though." He stood up and walked to his futon, picking up the pillow. Hinata stirred nearby but didn't wake up. Suga returned and placed his pillow next to Asahi's, then laid down with him. "Goodnight, Asahi."
"Goodnight." Asahi mumbled, putting an arm around Suga and, after a moment, pulling him close. He was warm and comforting, acting as an anchor for the stressed-out teen. His dreams were no longer plagued by nightmares and he slept peacefully.
