The voices calling out to him began to muffle as he remembered a dream.

Don’t do this, Riddick!

It was of the strum of a guitar, and the ring of a doorbell.

Stop it!

It was of the way her hair fell onto her shoulders, and the skin that touched his own at night.

Enough!

“Amyn, what are you doing here?”

“Oh, you know.. I was just in the neighborhood. Thought I’d say, ‘Hello.’”

“..We’re neighbors.”

Forget her!

It was of how they’d laugh.

She was killing you!

How none of it was real.

That’s right..

“But you killed her,” Riddick sharply inhaled, snapping back to reality.

He did.

“You.. killed her; she’s dying.”

“What’s important is that we take our leave.”

Go.

For a moment, he wished the voices around him hushed, but he could only ignore them as he knelt before a girl fading from light; a girl that soon, began to die in his arms. He helplessly watched as her color faded, and her eyes grew white.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

He had little time to react. There was such conflict within his heart.

Riddick, they’re coming. It’s time to go.

His vision was blurry, and he couldn’t understand why.

While leaving a blanket of shadows, he whispered to her, “Goodnight.”

Goodbye.

In retrospect, it wouldn’t have been hard for him to burn a man during one of his brawls. With the touch of his palm, he could’ve incinerated someone alive, but he supposed he loved the thrill. There was a rush with each punch and hit; something humanity called.. adrenaline?

It made him feel alive.

Real.

And, besides.. Hollywood’s leading actor couldn’t be seen as a human blow-torch, right? That was the reason why he took the back roads, leaving a trail of coughed up blood all the while. Paparazzi would’ve ate this up like the bag of chips he had in his pocket.

‘Or like the phone,’ he thought, feeling a buzzing on the inside of his leather coat.

“What’s the word, hummin’ bird?”

Wrong line. You’ve just pissed her off.

You told her you’d be home three hours ago.

“I know, I know. I’m late, and I’m sorry.”

Say something else. You know she’s upset.

“I know. I just.. Look, I’m sorry, okay. I’m on my way home now.”

“Kydei, please.. stoooooop.. I’m fine. I know it’s late, and I didn’t call … No, I don’t need a ride, I just—”

‘You can’t keep doing this to me.’

‘You’re not invincible, Corei.’

“..And you’re.. right. I’m not. And, I’m sorry.. I.. don’t make this easy.. for you. I know you didn’t ask for this—for any of this—and I don’t..—”

He took a deep breath.

“Look, I don’t.. — ..you’re.. the most important person to me, okay? If it wasn’t for you, I probably wouldn’t even be alive, and I know.. I know that’s not any comfort, but.. I do love you. And I do care, okay? I do.. and I’m sorry it doesn’t seem like it.. but don’t say that I don’t.”

And with another deep breath, Corei hung up the call, and shoved his hands into his jeans. “Fuckin’ damn it,” he muttered, looking up at the night sky.
