Meet some rare and endangered black softshell turtles, locally known as Mazari. They live in a pond near the Bayazid Bastami shrine. Legend has it that they descended from evil spirits that incurred the wrath of saint Bastami. Many believe the evil spirits were transformed into turtles and doomed to spend eternity in the pond. I touched one. It was soft. Oh, and they like to eat bananas.
