âIt wonât be long now. Soon weâll reach the portal, and your family will return to the analog world.â Quorra was all smiles.
âProvided we donât get shot out of the sky, thatâs definitely a possibility,â Jetâs tone was tactful, but his eyes expressed something else entirely. Not a desire to stay. No, Jet certainly made it clear he didnât want to stay in the system even after liberation. Disillusionment, muted and hollowed, was the closest definition she could think of.
âYouâre disappointed in Flynn,â she threw a line out into the dark, recounting the mood shift in Jet when they reunited with the Flynns.
A beat, then Jet looked away from the console, his expression questioning. âWhat?â
âYouâre not happy to see Flynn,â Quorra rephrased. âYou wish, maybe, we hadnât found him?â
âWhat? No. God, no. Thatâs not it,â He said once his brain caught up with him.
âThen whatâs bothering you? If you donât mind my asking.â
âItâs complicated.â
âUn-complicate it, please,â Quorraâs tone was hardly demanding, but Jet also caught the underlying caginess in her voice. She really was Mercuryâs sister program.
âLook, itâs not about Flynn, not really,â Jet sighed. âItâs a good thing we found him. Iâm glad my friend has his father back. Flynn coming backâitâs a good thing for everyone.â
âButâŠ?â Quorra waited for him to continue.
âIâm just not looking forward to the storm. Itâs gonna kick up. When he went missing, itâs like everything just froze up, crashed, without him there,â Jet said. âThe world revolved around Flynn, and everyone got sucked into this black hole Iâm not sure we ever got out of.â
Quorraâs brow furrowed. âYou were jealous of the attention Flynn being gone received compared to yourself?â
 âNo!â
âYou couldnât have been any older than a small sprite then, at least, by User reckoning,â Quorra started counting backward with her fingers.
âFor your information, I was seven when he went missing, so yeah, I was pretty young,â Jet remarked.
âSo, if youâre not jealous, then what are you?â
âAfraid, I guess,â He said. âIt took a long time to get used to him not being there, yâknow? I got comfortable with the misery that came with the disappearance. But I think I was the only one.â
âHow could you be used to misery? Didnât you want him to come back?â
âYes. Yes, more than anything, I want Uncle Flynn to come back with us.â
âThen whatâs the issue?â
âItâs the time. Twenty-one years, you can get used to anything, even misery. You justâŠâ He exhaled, âlose track. I donât want to keep track again.â
 âSo donât.â
âItâs not that simple. Losing track, itââ He shrugged. âIt helped me cope. Still helps me.â
âThatâs a terrible way to live.â Quorra looked disheartened.
Jet smiled contemptuously. âBut it is a way.â
 âFlynn wasnât your father.â
âHe wasnât. But, like I said, this really isnât about Flynn. Itâs more like his affect,â He said. When Quorra continued to stare in confusion, he tried another approach. âLook, how did you feel when your âmotherâ turned on you and the other ISOs? What was the first impression?â
Quorra looked thoughtful when she said, âHeartbreak?â
âOkay,â He said. âOur wildly different situations aside, imagine youâre seven years old, your father tells you your godfather has gone missing, and in seven months your entire life changes. Your ship isnât there anymore because itâs out to sea looking for a man overboard. Pretty soon that ship doesnât come back either. Little by little, thereâs a growing feeling of inadequacy as your world gets smaller and smaller until nothing is certain anymore.â
âI donât understand.â
âIâve lived a splintered life, Quorra. I was born when my parentsâ careers were at a high note, and neither of them was expecting me. I was the wrench in the gears, but they took it in stride, yâknow. They raised me as best they could, but Iâve always felt displaced. I lived between two homes, and I donât know how to explain this to you, but they were different sides of the world I live in. It was a constant upheaval. Neither of them wanted to let go of their careers, but I had them both with me.â
âSo, you can imagine, when Flynn disappears, my parents are super determined to find him. They move heaven and earth to find him. They do their best to make sure Sam is alrightâhis grandparents make sure he gets therapy. Me? I rarely see my dad. I canât go to my mother. My friend canât deal with me. I have no extended family. My uncle is probably dead. Iâm home alone, I sleep alone. I donât know how to handle what Iâm feeling, so nothing comes out right.â
âBut, your parents, they didnât mean for that to happen, Iâm sure.â
âSure, they probably didnât,â He shrugged. âBut the damage was done. I felt invisible, like a ghost. If I disappeared into some alternate timeline, would anyone really miss me? No, because Sam is there to take my place.â Jet sighed. âLook, my parents always tell me they tried their best, and Iâm old enough to know they did. I know they love me. But, truth be told, I think I was too close to them. So they couldnât see the issues beyond the surface problems, which was me being angry. Iâve never been able to shake that feeling of inadequacy. Even when my father stepped down from his job and stopped actively looking for my uncle, I could never feel comfortable. I was always waiting for the other shoe to drop. I was waiting for the moment where I just fell out of sight, out of mind.â
âJetâŠâ
âWhat Iâm saying here is that my parents were my world, but I wasnât really theirs. That was Flynn. That was Sam. Iâm the ghost in the machine.â
âBut that can change, canât it? It wonât be the same as last time.â
âNo, it wonât, Iâm not a kid anymore. By necessity, things are different,â Jet said, wiping his face. âLike I said, Iâm glad Samâs got his father back. Everyone gets what they want because Kevin Flynn comes back.â
âAnd you?â
âI have to change. This helplessness has informed every single facet of my life since Flynn disappeared,â he said. âAnd the only way thatâll happen is if I put some distance between myself and the people I love.â
The only way to describe the look on Quorraâs face was pity, but Jet didnât care. âI love âem to death, I wanna be with them, I do. But, I canât do that. Not until I can deal with not being important. That canât happen if Iâm with them.â

âThe Venger moved through the corridor specially designed for the carrier and throne ships. Clu listened to the crowd as they cheered the next proceedings, docile and compliant to the order of things. The window pane flickered and darkened. âWhatâs going on?â Alan asked, staring at the opaque screen before him.
âRelax, man, check it out,â Clu stopped lounging long enough to reach over and press his hand down on a scanner built into the arm of the couch. The window shone white, illuminating the room for a split second before dissipating to reveal a magnified landscape. Alan could see the arena detail far better, and it would seem, just in time for the combatants to step out into the spotlight.
Jet stepped into view, awed by the size of the arena around him. The weight on Alanâs chest alleviated some, at least until he saw the dried blood on the right of his sonâs temple. Marching ahead of him was a woman heâd never seen before, completely focused on the task at hand.
âLadies and gentlemen welcome to the Video Warrior Challenge,â The voice was not the woman who he saw earlier, but someone decidedly lacking the humanity displayed in other programs he met thus far.
âTracerâs busy with the Lightcycle race,â Clu provided as explanation.
Alan didnât really care. âWhat happened to Ma3a?â
âBack in the core? Canât really be away from her docking port for very long,â Clu answered. âSystem administrator, you understand.â
 âIâll pretend I do,â Alan said.â
