i recently got into UofT St. George campus to Arts and Humanities, and Im super confused. I finished my first year of college in the US (took 4 courses) and just realized how everything is so different from the states. What are POSTs? how to pick one? ugh, sorry im uber confused atm. help me out s'il vous plait? Thanks in advance. :]
The first thing you should do it call your college registrar to determine what year of study you will be starting in at U of T. Sometimes, transfer credits are not applicable to certain U of T programs and will not count as completed credits toward a degree. So even though this technically would be your second year of post-secondary education, it may only be considered your first-year at U of T. If you have figured this out, and you are starting your second-year at U of T, then the Subject POSt will apply to you. However, if it has been determined that you will be starting your first-year of study, then the Subject POSt does not quite apply to you yet. Nevertheless, I'll explain the deal about Subject POSts anyway!
Subject POSts are the specialists, majors, and/or minors that you plan to study in university. At U of T, you cannot declare a major until your second-year of study. At the end of your first-year, you will be able to go onto ROSI, our Student Web Service, during a specific time frame provided for you in the timetable, and apply to the programs in which you would like to achieve a degree. Each program has their own code that you must enter on ROSI in order to apply. The codes are listed here: http://www.artsci.utoronto.ca/current/undergraduate/course/timetable/1112_fw/subject-post-codes-contacts.
Each Subject POSt also had its own category - Type 1, 2 or 3. Generally, Type 1 Subject POSts have no requirements other than the completion of 4.0 credits. Type 2 Subject POSts require the completion of specific pre-requisite courses and minimum GPA/grade requirements in order to enrol. Type 3 Subject POSts require you to apply on the Faculty of Arts and Science Registrar's Official Website and also requires the completion of specific pre-requisite courses, additional information required by the sponsor of the POSt, and have limited enrollment space. Detailed information and instruction on how to apply for each type are available here: http://www.artsci.utoronto.ca/current/undergraduate/course/timetable/1112_fw/step-2. Specific program requirements for the enrollment in specialists, majors, and minors can be found under each program description in the St. George calendar, available online here: http://www.artsandscience.utoronto.ca/ofr/calendar/index.html#
You may apply to as many Subject POSts as you want, but you may only enrol in up to three. This is because in order to graduate from U of T, you must either be enrolled in one specialist, OR two majors, OR a major and two minors. If you apply to a Type 1 Subject POSt, your status on ROSI will become 'Active' right away, meaning that you have been automatically enrolled in it because it requires no pre-requisites or approval from the faculty. When first applying to Type 2 and 3 Subject POSts, your status will say 'Requested'. If you have been approved by the faculty to enrol, your status will change to 'Invited' after a specific period of time as described in the timetable. From there, you may accept anywhere from one, and up to three Subject POSts to enrol in (depending on whether you choose the specialist, double major, or major and double minor combo).Â
That's really all there is to it! It may seem confusing at first, but it isn't so bad when it actually becomes time to apply! I hope this helped clear some things up for you though, and good luck in September!
