Shadow going in with “Excuse me he asked for No Pickles!“ energy
Naugus has locked everyone out while he holds the Master Emerald shards, but he also unleashed the crystallized Omega on Knuckles’ friends! Now the bot’s blocking the way and I guess that’s what the gang have to deal with next issue.
I adore the little details with Knux and Amy!! Him bringing her out of harm’s way, helping her up afterwards. Definitely a more friendly dynamic than what Shadow and Rouge have going on.
Also watch out for that random spikeball on the ground, don’t want you guys losing your rings over it!
This issue is much more action-packed than the previous one, but what makes this issue more than a good read is the excelling character writing and the LORE!
Yeah, there’s more lore! I will always be fascinated by post-reboot’s Archie Sonic and how they set up all these deities and intertwine them with events and visuals straight from the games. Nixis gives a long-winded speech about his actual civilization, cleverly named “the second great civilization“ a clever nod to the Nocturnus Clan, the “fourth great civilization“. We also get more of an elaboration on “Ixis“, the Troll’s patron deity who was also a primordial force sealed away by what appears to be the “Chaos Titans“ Chip was lectured about. Can’t help but feel Ixis looks rather similar to Black Doom too, man, it would have been really cool to see the story ideas this was all leading up to! Damn this book for never continuing!
Funny that Ixis is yet another evil deity that has existed since time immemorial and was sealed away by the good Chaos forces. It's no wonder Wally got them mixed up in #83.
The pages of Knuckles duking it out with the spell-casting Wally Naugus are still impressive. His art ain’t nearly as dynamic as it would be in IDW Sonic but ABT’s lineart and Matt Herms’ vibrant colouring really do these two justice!
It’s like watching a strong melee DPS go toe-to-toe with a swift magical DPS.

Oh hey, they even incorporated the mysterious pipe organ from the updated versions of Sonic 2! What’s a better place for a Troll wizard disguised as an Echidna to hide, I suppose.
And yeah, it’s pretty obvious but Nixis was Naugus the whole time! Kinda hard to be surprised when he just named his Echidna form that of his wirshipped deity and adding an “N“ at the beginning. xD
Could this be...? Knuckles isn’t actually the last Echidna? Was there really another of his kind just wandering Hidden Palace Zone this whole time? And why does he look like Naugus but as a Mobian??
The chances of Knuckles meeting another Echidna is one in a million, but I guess we won’t know for sure unless we get into it!
I like the variant cover by Diana Skelly and Rick Bryant too! The “& Knuckles“ meme is forever prevalent but I always love me some Classic Sonic goodness.
