The line delivery on this is incredible, I’ve been unable to go on because I’ve just been snorting at my keyboard. GARNET, I WANT INSIDE YOUR HEAD. I WANT YOUR IMPECCABLE COMEDIC TIMING.
Why does Garnet only have 15% of the dialogue when she’s stolen a 150% of my heart?
I WANT TO BE WHERE THE PEOPLE ARE-
Amethyst’s room is so incredibly beautiful. She’s got this earthen cave with a lagoon, where she can burrow into piles of stuff... Pearl’s room was practically empty, but there’s so much here to draw your eye.
All her junk is exposed and laid out for everyone to see. There’s beams of light shining down on her, illuminating scant amounts of what’s inside, but you can see the sparkles - there’s a lot of visual distortion in this room, too. And to get it in the first place, looks like you have to go dig under layers and layers of crystal formations and cave.
She has water, too, but in shallow pools, which might, as she claims, be run off from Pearl’s room - and isn’t that interesting, that Pearl’s perfectly manicured room has all these weak spots that trickle down into Amethyst, that Pearl’s leaks make up so much of the foundation of Amethyst’s room she doesn’t really have much solid ground to stand on.
The presence of so much stuff is neat too - Both Pearl and Amethyst seem possessive of what they own, though they treat it in very different ways. If we can judge from her swords, we might assume that Pearl has a carefully curated set of treasured items, one that she probably catalogues and cleans and stores compulsively. Amethyst, on the other hand, just has whatever probably took her fancy in the moment. And there’s nothing magical or fantastical here. She’s got a bed, a kitchen (god knows how they get electric in here), and the rest looks like souvenirs of normal human things on Earth. And she’s just chucking them about to see where they land.
Maybe it’s like Greg’s magical storage unit. This is the remnants of Amethyst’s previous non-Gem life. Or maybe her habit of theft runs deeper. If we get all psychoanalytic, sometimes people are driven to obtain objects to symbolically compensate for early loss or neglect. Sometimes people steal because they’ve never had anyone in their life to tell them not to act on every impulse they have.
This is fascinating to me. We have four adults, all of whom seem to live in highly untraditional and impractical ways, and their one son who they’ve given a normal beach condo all to himself.
Pearl lives in a goddamn meditation app. It’s a very calming, reflective space (everything around her is literally reflective), and it’s full of blades. She seems to have a massive glass conservatory above, looking out to these fuschia pink stars at dusk, and she’s decorated with wide transluscent ribbons under a big, focused spotlight.
It’s a place that feels so exposed and open. It’s a bit theatre-like, actually - she’s the prima ballerina and all the stages are for her. It’s a brightly lit, nearly empty space, and I guess that means her own vision of what’s outside that glass is obscured - she can only see the brightest of those stars. But anything looking in has a wide open view of her. And I 100% buy Pearl just does shit like this when she’s alone.
At the same time, she’s not completely on show. There’s things she’s hiding under the surface, and a whole lot of surface to hide under.
Less metaphorically, if Pearl is also an alien, it might be that the sight of stars are a reminder of her home. And the water might also have a practical use - we haven’t really explored how the Gems take care of their Gemstones, but pearls need a lot of gentle cleaning, especially if you throw them around dusty sandy ruins all the time.
I guess her bed is under the water? That seems impractical.

Okay, it’s not just their faces, it’s the music in this scene and the way it hangs on them just slightly too long for comfort. This show slides into so many off-beat moments and it gives it a slightly more surreal and adult humour than I’d expect for the target audience. It’s fantastic.
GARNET’S ROOM. GARNET’S ROOM IS ONE OF THE MOST DANGEROUS SPACES IN THE TEMPLE.
And, okay, again I’m not sure what to draw from this. Pearl and Amethyst have given us quite a bit of character insight in the forty minutes we’ve spent with them, but Garnet is just as closed off as her room.
But maybe that’s the point. This room is tall, walled in stone. It’s absolutely overgrown with these power tubes (the… veins I guess?) that tangle up and over one another and block out the light. It’s solid and ominous and it feels like a cage. If Amethyst is the Little Mermaid, these give me some Sleeping Beauty’s castle vibes. It's a room concerned with security and locking out anything that threatens that. But it also, by design, keeps out the rest of her family. It’s also scary, and it scares the others. Hmm.
There’s very dim light, mostly from the cool as shit lava pit, but also it looks like these pokeballs glow. Or maybe the Gems inside them glow… And look at all those Gems in here… It’s both... natural and unnatural. The veins look like tangled vines, the lava is contained and being used as some kind of forge.
There’s no comfort, there’s no indulgence. This space is pure power and mission. Whatever Garnet’s mission is. And why is it Garnet alone who takes on this work? WHO ARE YOU GARNET.
Oh no, a story of child neglect. Steven building his elaborate tower of waffles while waiting for his mums to come home is piercing my heart in unexpected ways.
