When the muse strikes its easy to get swept away in the tide of inspiration. I’ve made some finished (dare I say polished) pieces that I’m incredibly proud of.
But the past few pieces I’ve attempted haven’t been working for me and I feel like I need to pause, step back, and complete some classic sketch studies to get back to the heart and core of The Character: Jonathan Crane version. (The Scarecrow is it’s own thing.)
Below the cut are some of my headcanon’s to help me stay true to my vision:
Deep scar on upper left lip (it’s fun to draw and he’s been whumped many a time.)
Rarely smiles, when he does it’s unnerving.
Has somewhat jacked up teeth.
More of a hook/hawk/Roman nose (I’ve been slipping into a bumpy up-turned lil number, and it’s just not right.
Eye bags, always.
Eyes are deep set, large, and icy pale blue.
Dark lash line to contrast.
Pupils are usually tiny, except when engaged in deep debate or injecting someone w toxin.
Cheek bones!
Actually all the bones. This man is a spooky sexy scary skeleton.
(Need to draw him w stubble more often)
Many glasses types work but I’m favoring the round style. Nice contrast to all his pointy angles.
His hair is longer than your average 9-5er. More due to lack of maintenance than deliberate style.
Has a massive cowlick and his hair is therefore untamable.
Lot of grey at the temples, salt and pepper sprinkled through out.
My what big ears, all the better to hear you scream.
Ears are round like the cartoon Ichabod Crane.
Bushy eye brows.
Hairy arms that continue to back of hands.
Lots of rolled up sleeves.
Wears dress shirts, slacks, lab coats, (and one day blazers with elbow patches). Is fastidious but not image conscious. More a creature of habit when it comes to dressing/appearance.

A little transparent image with my partner Dracoshroob in the style of game Paper Mario and The Thousand Year Door. I don't often try styles from other creators/franchises but I like how it came out. :3
Generally, lots and lots of recycled and/or repurposed clothing items and fabrics- really no wrong answers here. In my head, people are wearing what they can get their hands on, even if it's as random as an old school sports jersey, or else sewing together and handmaking their own clothes to fit specific purposes. Some Medieval and ancient world influence in accessories (just for my own fun). Nothing too "clean"-looking, though.
Ripalta, specifically, has a style/aesthetic due to the local seamstresses who actively collect materials to make clothes for those who enter the city in need. Breathable linen items, for the most part, given Ripalta's mild-to-sweltering coastal weather- and also the fabric's ready availability. Since the city itself is a Medieval relic, those taking on the task of seamstress like to pay homage to this fact with subtle nods to the past. In short, within Ripalta, one is as likely to see someone wearing a tunic or light robes out and about as they are to see a ratty AC/DC tee. { Also, some sea scraps as accessories, shells and glass etc. }
Outside of Ripalta and other restored cities, I imagine clothing getting rattier, dustier, Mad Max-ier, for sure.
In my head, Florisdelfa would've had a sort of pagan-priestess vibe to their clothing- headcoverings and a more gauzy and virginal palette, say, than Ripalta.
