Conclusion
“All in all, the creative act is not performed by the artist alone.. the spectator brings the work in contact with the external world by deciphering and interpreting its inner qualifications and thus adds his contribution to the creative act.”
― Marcel Duchamp
Through this six week course, I’ve learnt a lot about producing art in both technical aspects and in mentality. The theme of Chopshop was very interesting to explore and we looked at ideas of recontextualisation and appropriation with objects to create new meaning. Creating our own found object sculpture tested our understanding of meaning and aesthetics. I think the most important thing I learned from this class was the advice to just start. Simple thinking like this allows spontaneous art and helps push through mental blocks. I learnt that by starting, you often discover your objective along the journey of your art making. I know that this is something that I will take with me throughout my time in SCA.

final class
In the final class we prepared for the exhibition of our finished work. It was a really great atmosphere with everyone excited to display their work and see others. We had a peer assessment which was half fun and half nerve wracking. I found it really interesting to hear everyone in the class explain their work and understand concepts that I wasn't aware of before. Marking each other enabled us to really think about other peoples work and assess their success not just our own which is often the case. It also helped us to get a large variety of feedback that I believe is really important to our development and how we work. It also got us talking about our own artworks which I found really hard to do. I found it difficult to articulate what I meant and I'm not sure whether I said everything I wanted to but apparently we need to do this often so I'm glad we got the opportunity to practice, especially in front of a crowd. I think that was a really important skill to learn but I think I still haven't got it down yet.

reskin + resurface
During this class, I had cleared up my ideas of my final work and set about doing it. I wanted to make my little chess box explode with intricate things so I had decided on using strings to keep the box open due to their delicate thinness. This also meant that they were difficult and frustrating to work with and kept coming undone. It took me a while to knot tiny branches on the strings. I also punched holes through the box to stand my chess players in and glued the chess board and clock into place. As my artwork needed fresh flowers, I left that stage till the next week. In the second class I painted my stuffed animal black, only because I realised it didn't look scary enough, (something that I should have thought of a long time ago) and lacquered my board with shellac which was interesting and gave a very nice colour to the wood.
connect + screw and glue
In this lesson, I had collected more objects sourced from second hand shops and was starting to think about arrangement. The important thing I had to remind myself was to just get started and explored the deconstruction of a few of my objects as well as taking a lot of notes and doing a lot of drawings. These rough plans were very useful in the making of my finished artwork and helped me test out different display options. I dismissed a lot of ideas this lesson and perhaps got a little frustrated that it wasn't working out exactly how I would have wanted. I changed my mind a lot but having it all planned on paper helped me think things out. There was not too much to screw or glue on my shield, so instead I practiced my skills by sinking nails into a piece of wood. I also used a stapling gun to secure my animal to my board, which was the scariest two minutes of my life - but I'm truthfully very glad I had the opportunity to practice and use all the equipment.
deconstruct/reconfigure + carving
The idea of a Chopshop really came into place within this lesson and we learnt about the social connotations of rebuilding/reusing objects and how this can create new meaning within the finished project. Whether the idea of the work was a ready made or required remodelling, its form, its message and its history were some really important questions we addressed. I spent my time in this class looking for materials. I employed what I learnt in the first lesson which was about searching for images and became very in tune with my own pull of aesthetics and found things around town. Coming back to the drawing board I became stuck and Oliver gave me some great advice that was to list everything I could think of. I came up with more than I was expecting to and I know I will now use that advice in future because it really helped me. The next class focused on carving, something that I was really excited to do although my shield did not require it. The fact that I was very excited to use a chisel was the reason I stripped the top layer of my shield anyway and to my surprise found it created a really nice effect on the colour and texture of the wood. It also gave me good practise at using chisels which I enjoyed.
