Labsessions 9 : Call for projects

Digital emerging artists’ project presentations Presented by the Society for Arts and Technology (SAT), the Conseil québécois des arts médiatiques (CQAM), Agence TOPO, Eastern Bloc, ELEKTRA - BIAN, Labo NT2, OBORO, PRIM, Studio XX and Vidéographe, Labsessions invite emerging artists working in the field of digital art to submit a new work-in-progress project for the 8th Labsessions event, taking place on Tuesday Januar 21th 2016, from 5-8pm at Studio XX.

Labsessions aim to support emerging artists working in digital arts, and to give them the opportunity to showcase the work they do. Those events are also a networking place for artists, digital art organizations attendees and for various cultural workers. Three projects will be selected and each artist will be invited to do a short presentation (or demo) in front of those attending the event. Following the presentations and question periods, the partner organizations will provide constructive criticism through written commentaries and suggestions which will be sent to the artist later on. In addition to the Labsessions, partner organizations might offer assistance to their sole discretion; which can take different forms depending on their respective mandate and resources (equipment loan, access to media labs, technical support, consultation or mentorship, access to an activity or a festival, etc.).

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA • You must be a Canadian emerging artist working in the field of digital art; • Having an innovative project in progress; • Only one project by edition; • Meeting the deadline with an application form fully completed (PDF); • Selected applicants should be ready to present their project to an audience for 15 minutes in English or French (pictures highly recommended). Word format ASSESSMENT CRITERIA • Artistic quality and originality • Ability to realize the project • Possibility of dissemination and impact • Application quality

Stemming from the projects presented at CLARK for Mois de la Photo à Montréal, Dina Kelberman will host a discussion where concepts of curating and working with Internet will be explored through her work. Participants will also be taught the step-by-step process of using Photoshop to create animated GIFs.

Les HTMlles 10 est un festival féministe d’arts médiatiques et de culture numérique produit à Montréal par le Studio XX, centre d’artistes féministe bilingue engagé dans l’exploration, la création, la diffusion et la réflexion critique en art technologique. Lancé en 1997, le festival est une plateforme internationale dédiée à la présentation publique d’oeuvres d’arts médiatiques innovatrices et indépendantes, créées par des artistes s’auto-identifiant comme femmes, trans ou dissidents et dissidentes du genre et dévoilant la création technologique contemporaine sous toutes ses facettes.

La 10e édition du festival Les HTMlles se fera sous le signe du risque. Risquer: gagner ou perdre, s’exposer à une possibilité…Le risque est un potentiel. Qu’elle soit connotée positivement ou négativement, l’idée de risque implique celles de l’évaluation, de l’action et de la répartition, et donc du pouvoir. Le mot « risque » a évolué au cours de l’histoire du capitalisme : le concept de « société du risque » pour sa part n’apparaît qu’il y a une vingtaine d’années. Il a été utilisé par des sociologues pour rendre compte de la manière dont la société moderne s’organise autour de l’idée de risque, dans le sens de se préparer au futur (ce qu’une société devrait être en mesure de gérer). Cependant, du moment où on envisage ou imagine le futur, nous adoptons des comportements risqués.

Dans une période comme celle que nous vivons, à ce point critique, il est peut-être crucial de (se) questionner un tant soit peu. De quelle manière s’articule aujourd’hui le langage utilisé pour conceptualiser le risque? De quelle manière prend-on des risques aujourd’hui? Quels sont les différents niveaux de risque dans nos diverses (trans)actions? Quelle est la relation entre risque, technologie et pouvoir? Par quelles voies le risque est à la fois géré et créé? Comment est-il réparti? Depuis quand une personne « investi » -elle dans son avenir et qu’est-ce que ça signifie réellement? Aussi, qu’ont les artistes à en dire, de ce qu’on nomme « crises » et « risques »? En quoi faire de l’art est-il risqué aujourd’hui?

Ce blogue est un espace dédié à la réflexion critique autour de la notion du risque et de ses implications sur l'art médiatique féministe. The HTMlles is a feminist festival of media arts and digital culture produced in Montreal by Studio XX, a bilingual feminist artist-run centre for technological exploration, creation and critique. Initiated in 1997, the HTMlles is an international platform dedicated to the presentation of women’s, trans and gender non-conforming artists’ independent media artworks from all facets of contemporary technological creation.

The 10th edition of The HTMlles will take up the notion of risk. To risk: to gain or to lose, to expose oneself to a possibility…Risk is a potential. Whether used positively or negatively, the idea of risk implies that of evaluation, action and distribution, and thus, power. While the term “risk” evolved with the development of capitalism, the concept of “risk society” is about twenty years old and has been used by scholars to describe how modern society organizes around the idea of risk, that is, in response to a future (which society should be able to manage). By simply invoking or imagining the future, one immediately engages in risky behaviours.

In such a critical moment, it is perhaps crucial to ask (ourselves) some questions. How does the language of risk articulate itself today? What is at risk today? How can one take risks today? What are the different levels of risk in our various (trans)actions? What is the relationship between risk, technology and power? How is risk managed, created and distributed? Since when does one “invest” in one’s future and what does it actually mean? What do artists have to say about these so-called risks and crises? How is making art risky today?

This blog is a space for critical reflection about the notion of risk, and its implications for feminist media arts. Don't Forget Mom.  Especially not this Sunday, designated Mother's Day by the powers that be.  Remember back in elementary school, when we would shower Mom with poorly-made crafts?  In Montreal, 18 established/emerging artists from a range of disciplines were asked to “make a macaroni necklace.” The resulting multidisciplinary show is at Studio XX, until May 12 .
