Bugs
I have said a lot of nice things about Montréal after I moved here, and they're all true! So please keep that in mind when I now point out a few things that bug me. I'm not hatin'! Still just observing.
The one thing that tops all little and big annoyances I encounter is the fact that it's near impossible for people with a stroller (with a kid in it) to manoeuvre in down town Montréal. And when I say "down town" I mostly mean the Metro. One thing is that there aren't any elevators to jump in, but most disturbing; there aren't even any tracks on the stairs to roll the pram down on! I've seen mothers carrying their child on one arm and the pram under the other. To me that's INSANE! It inhibits mothers to have a normal day-to-day routine in my opinion.
Then there's some weird bureaucracy at times, like today at the post office; I wanted to send two letters back home. Only, I had forgotten to put the address on one of them. I sort of want the letters to arrive at the same time, but I wasn't allowed to take the other letter (with an address) home. Cause the post man had put a sticker on it and: "That means it belongs to us now. You can't have it back". A surreal WTF-moment to me. For real? The letter I wrote does not belong to me any more!? Whatever.
And then there is the service... Now, I _know_ I'm skating on thin ice when criticising the service-level, coming from Norway who has a reputation for very rude service. But in Montréal it's not so much rude service, just the lack of any service. I have been at McDonalds and seen no less than 8 people behind the counter seemingly wandering around doing nothing but talking to each other. And still having to wait a whooping 10 minutes for my Quarter Pounder Trio. And it's not just McDonalds! It's everywhere! Granted, it's mostly at lunch places, but still it bugs me.
So there it is. Things that stand out to me as a foreigner and as an immigrant. It's not enough to make me pack my suitcases and my cats and go back to where I came from. Far from it! But it does make me twitch just a little.
Peace, out!
I still love you my dear Monties!
