Women in Mahabharata - Pramila
She is the queen of an all-women kingdom (Stri-rajya) that Arjun encounters on his quest to follow Yudhishthira's ashvamedha yajna's horse. It is believed that a man who gets married to any woman who lives there dies within the next month/year [depending on the version].
Pramila captures Arjun's horse and challenges him to either marry her or die in battle. Arjun chooses to fight. He very nearly kills her and is only stopped from doing so by the devas.
After this, Arjun instructs Pramila to take her 20,000 subjects and go wait in Yudhishthira's house until he gets back and then marries her. He also tells her to request Yudhishthira to find husbands for the rest of the women (I am not quite sure if they even wanted husbands, but obviously Arjun is hardly the type to worry about petty things like that).
