Apparently string gardens are a western take on Kokedama and I'm just so into this even though obviously it has a potential to be messy? Low moisture plants with a shallow root structure would be ideal (I don't know how well that fruit tree is going to survive) but if your area is humid enough it would open more options.
Personally, I'd just be happy with some moss and some drought resistant ground cover plants. I think wild primrose and clover would be amazing for this
