I started lifting weights in 1977 when I was 12 years old, and continued, non-stop, until I started doing Bikram yoga in 2003. Yoga allowed me to maintain my muscle tone. I gave up running and strength training, exclusively doing yoga. In 2010 I added in HIIT, doing INSANITY, and then became an instructor. The added component of BOTH cardio and free-body exercises seemed to refill the gap I made. In the last 3-ish years I have added on top of the above, more weight lifting, and most recently have upped my game and can feel the difference. Strength training, in any of its forms, builds muscle tone, endurance, and mass, and improves bone density.
