I just remembered that ShadowClan queens canonically sneak out of the nursery to join patrols... that's hilarious. What's Brightflower's most memorable moments from her time as a queen? And did Yellowfang ever catch her sneaking away?
Brightflower was a very crafty queen - she noticed rather quickly that the reason most queens were found out was because they made the mistake of sneaking onto border watches. Because the watches have specific posts, it's easy for the menders to just stride out and drag them home.
So in the dead of night, she'd sneak out with her kits - her excuse would be that she's getting them used to being awake during proper Shadow hours, this way they couldn't wake up from a nap complaining they can't find her and give her away - then they'd go to Moonsoul's Pool when she'd let them goof around.
While Yellowkit, Nutkit and Rowankit played - she would sprint out into the wider marsh to enjoy herself and catch as much as she can. She rotated which part of the forest she slept in. Sagewhisker would swear up and down that Brightflower was sneaking out but she could never prove anything.
Yellowfang was a bit of an enabler lmao. She caught Brightflower sneaking out all the time because she knew where her mother liked to hide - but instead of ratting her out, she just kitsat her younger siblings to keep them quiet.
Brightflower's most outrageous moment was when Sagewhisker - determined to drag her back to camp this time - managed to track her down. Before she could be seen, Brightflower took a full-blown sprint towards one of the taller trees and scrambled as high up as she could. The trees in Creeping Shadows territory don't have any low branches anymore so she just clung there, upside-down covered in mud from hiding her scent praying to all nine Souls that Sagewhisker didn't look up.
She was found out when she got back to camp because she didn't have the time to clean the mud out of her fur but by then, she was already back in the nursery so Sagewhisker couldn't do anything.
Yellowfang still cackles in the stars about that whole incident

ShadowClan is a strict clan that praises loyal to the clan, obedience and faith in the Souls as what makes a proper and respected warrior. With such a heavy emphasis on the needs of the many prioritized over the needs of the few, it only makes sense that they can be harsh when it comes to punishments. One such example of their strictness is the role of the Executioner.
The Executioner is said a high ranking member of the clan tasked with the responsibility of ending the lives of those the leader deems too dangerous for their clan and others alike it. They’re revered and viewed with a degree of awe and wonder by their clan mates as instruments of their leaders’ will. An Executioner is the most loyal, faithful and obedient cat in the clan and many consider the position more prestigious than the role of the deputy. They are loyal in that they are willing to tarnish a bit of their soul to remove a danger from the clan; they are obedient for they will execute on their Star’s Command and they hold the most faith in their strict prayers and devotion to the Souls Above.
Executioners come right after the medics on the totem pole in ShadowClan on par with the clan’s diplomat.
The Executioner is the Paw of the Star
1a. An executioner will not on their own decide to silence someone
1b. An executioner is chosen by the leader themselves
2. The Executioner must be a fully trained warrior
2a. No cat who hasn’t killed someone may be elected executioner
3. The Executioner must pray to Suhakur and Moonsoul daily
3b. The Executioner will fast on the night of a full moon\
3c. The Executioner will sacrifice a portion of every meal for the Souls
4. The Executioner is loyal to the Souls first and their Leader Second
4a. If a leader is removed from power, the executioner will take oathe to the new leader
4b. If the executioner is unwilling to serve a new leader, they will be removed from their position and outskirts
4c. An outskirted executioner is buried with as must respect as a camp-one
4d. An Executioner will protect the Anaconda at the cost of their lives
5. An Executioner’s paws must always be covered when claws are not in use
5a. Paws are unclothed during: hunting, invasions, executions
5b. An Executioner may not dull their claws unless they risk harming themselves
6. An Executioner may not fight any battle outside of invasions
6a. Any life an Executioner takes from the moment they are elected is to be intentional
7. An Executioner must perform executions with the proper, swift and painless techniques permitted by the Souls
7a. An Executioner who causes intentional suffering will be dismissed
7b. An Executioner is permitted to disobey a leader who encourages the suffering of the executed
8. There may be only two fully trained Executioners at a time
8a. One - an executioner that serves the leader exclusively
8b. Two - an executioner that serves the Anaconda exclusively
8c. Both executioners may be training an apprentice executioner but they must retire once they are fully trained
While all of the prides have long since steadily diverged from each other culturally as they became more and more set in their ways, coining more and more specialized ranks that match their territory; most of the prides still have what are considered the Basic Ranks that allow a pride to function.
The Anchored Stars
The Anchored Stars are the highest ranks in the pride and no pride is capable of functioning or considering themselves a proper pride without all the positions filled. In times that more than one of the Anchored ranks are empty; the prides may neglect certain tasks (such as border patrols) or important meetings (like the Great Games) in favor of adequately filling in the positions. If the pride has a vacant Anchor longer than a moon, the other prides may refuse to acknowledge them as a proper pride or offer aid and step in.
It’s considered bad form to take advantage of a pride with vacant Anchors so most prides will see empty spaces and will choose to offer aid.
While all ranks of the Anchored Stars are mandatory for the prides to function, certain ranks are considered more important than others based on the pride.
Leader: The Highest Rank of all the Anchored Stars, sometimes matched in power by one of the others depending on the pride. Leaders are the final authority on most things in a pride - they perform the naming ceremonies of warriors, handle-wider pride relations and have the biggest say on whether or not a pride goes to war. Leaders are blessed by Moonsoul themself, receiving Nine Lives from the Heart of the Mother-Maw while the moon-god pins the beast in place. Up to nine cats from the realm of StarClan can offer a blessing in the form of an additional life to the next leader and once they’re received, the leader takes on the suffix -star showing their connection to their ancestors and Moonsoul themself. In close range, it’s clear that every pride has its own design for a leader mark albeit the general format remains consistent. Leaders are fundamental to a pride and a leaderless pride is exempt from all other formalities until such matters are settled.
Deputy: The second-highest rank in the forest that serves just under the leader and - in most prides - becomes the new leader when the old passes or steps down. Deputies have no specific name affix albeit they’re often picked from the pride’s Heads. Now if a leader is a macro manager, the deputy of a pride is a micromanager. They often handle the daily interactions between the pride and leader, running smaller affairs such as organizing patrols and keeping a leader updated on things like apprentice advancement. While it’s up to a leader to choose their deputy, an unpopular deputy usually struggles greatly through their tasks as their pridemates challenge them at every step. Deputies are mandatory to have in all prides but the Crawling Shadows who will often bring an heir to stand in. Missing deputies cause succession problems so in a way, having an empty deputy slot is more dangerous than having an empty leader slot.
Diplomat: The peacekeepers and strategists of the pride. Bound together by a desire to see all four prides thrive and an interest in fighting non-physical battles, diplomats are the lowest of the Anchored Stars but a deeply treasured one all the same. Diplomats are meant to bang out trading deals, secure treaties and minimize the chances of their own pride going to war. On the occasion that their pride does go to war however, diplomats double as battle strategists, advising their leaders on combat plans and how to best go about seizing a deciding victory. Diplomats are requested to be present every-full moon, so there’s a soft limit of about one moon to appoint a new one when the role is vacated.
Medic: The second or third-highest rank in a pride depending on who you speak to. They’re the healers, attending to the sick and injured in an attempt to bring them back to a state of wellness. When the Sacred Ranks aren’t filled, it’s generally accepted that the Medics communicate with StarClan who can occasionally bring messages from the souls. Medics have another code of ethics that they adhere to over the general warrior-code - the code is generally the same across prides but with minor changes based on individual pride culture.
Medics can be broken into three ranks - Combatives, Healers and Prophets. Healers are poster-kits for medics being cats that focus on healing to the best of their ability. They memorize hundreds of herbs, growing spaces, herb locations and learn to use their healer specific spark to perform incredible, life-saving actions as they develop more and more techniques. Combat Medics are trained to heal within the throng of battle, more than capable of defending themselves and a patient being assaulted. Combat medics are often former warriors that eventually heard a call to healing and turned their claws towards only being used in defense of a patient.
Prophets are often called True Mediums or Soulspeakers - they’re cats with a natural affinity towards the spirit world, often finding omens scattered across the world like leaves in autumn. Prophets in general are rare and powerful ones are even rarer so when they’re identified, most prides have it as law that they must become a healer or at least take lessons in healing regardless of what the cat’s desired pathway as a warrior is. A medic is considered as fundamental to a pride’s continued survival as a leader - a pride cannot afford to fight battles without a medic to patch up any wounds at the end on the risk of them getting infected. Infected wounds kill more cats that active battle does after all.
Sacred
The Sacred Ranks are different from pride to pride and are deeply treasured by the prides whenever they have one. Often referred to as Soul-Speakers by their pride mates, the Sacred Ranks are considered the prides’ most direct links to minor gods, lesser spirits and at times; full-blown Souls for guidance. The Sacred are known for their skill in reading omens and having a Treasured Companion that links them to one of the spirits. The Sacred are in an interesting position of the Anchored Stars - though a pride is only considered complete if they have one; it’s very common for a pride to go seasons without a Soul-Speaker considering they must be chosen by the Souls themselves.
It varies from pride to pride how hard the Sacred Ranks are worked on to be filled.
The Raging Wind prides themselves in their spirituality, always claiming to be the closest to StarClan and the most beloved by the Souls as their line of Medics are their Sacred Ranks. Starting from Mothflight, the Mother of Healing herself all the way to their current medics, their healers are all blessed by the Souls either by the merit of being the kin of Mothflight herself or through being Chosen by The Green Moth. When a new moth is chosen by The Moth directly, The Raging Wind tends towards referring to them as -flutter. The Raging Wind does not consider their pride complete if they don’t have an active Moth and also an heir.
The Crawling Shadows is next in the way of their intense loyalty to the spirits frequently resulting in them clashing and arguing with the Raging Wind over who is most dedicated. The Anacondas of the Crawling Shadows were chosen by Kassebera; the Serpent. Whenever an Ancaconda is chosen, they are trained in basic healing and usually, a new executioner is trained to serve them as well. It’s common for the Anaconda to be given the suffix -serpent. While the Crawling Shadows doesn’t consider their pride complete without the Anaconda, they are willing to attend Gatherings and go through the motions of pride-life until one is chosen.
The Roaring Thunder are next along these lines - unlike the Crawling Shadows and the Raging Wind, The Roaring Thunder associates their Sacred Rank (the Strix) with an approaching future of struggle and conflict. Strix are only chosen on the brinks of war or during times of famine and starvation though they stay long after the inciting event ends. The Roaring Thunder hence believes that the Souls will get involved when the dangers facing the pride are massive and pride threatening in manner but are otherwise content to allow the prides to control themselves. As such, The Roaring Thunder believes their pride complete even without their Sacred Rank and when one is chosen, they believe the Souls themselves are watching and that they should be on their best behavior.
And finally the Frothing Shores has the longest stretches between having a solid sacred rank - they can go a few leaders before they have another chosen. When the crabs are spawned and first start coming onto land to look for shells, the Frothing Shores first has to identify if there are any Blessed Ones within the stock. Those they find are separated from the greater bunch and the current kits and fresh-apprentices are presented to the crabs. For six suns, the kit the crab pays the most attention to becomes the next Shell and are frequently granted the name suffix -husk upon completion of their training. By nature of the long spawning period, the Frothing Shores considers itself complete without a Shell and more when they have one.
Warriors
Heads: Not a separate rank from the other ranks within the prides but rather, the cats who are considered the most skilled and experienced in their field. Heads exist for all the other ranks of the pride - both the general ranks that all four prides have but also for each of the pride’s specialized ranks such as Divers, Murkers and Runners. These are the cats that everyone turns to when someone is confused or needs assistance in their training; they come up with proposals for further training exercises and even set the standard for the graduations of apprentices through their various assessment. With the creation of the Promotional Assessment, the Heads of the prides are responsible for the monitoring the promotion of apprentices under their rank.
Due to the responsibility and skill that comes with being a Head, it’s common for them to receive apprentices and therefore; common for them to be promoted to the deputy position. Rank Heads often have “heirs” - up-and-coming warriors of their ranks with all the making of a good Head and they will spend time polishing those skills and talents to perfection in the hopes of them replacing them one day.
When referring to their “Senior Warriors,” leaders are typically referring to the Heads of their pride.
Guards: Among the most heavy-set cats in the prides, Guards are the bulk of a pride’s fighters. They are defenders, their specialist training focusing on advanced battle moves and combat techniques. Guards don’t just battle other warriors though - especially in the case of the Roaring Thunder with the variety of hostile fauna - guards are also responsible for the safety and defense of the pride from large predators and are the default watchers for when a cat needs to leave the territory. When medics need to go to the Moonstone, they take a trusted Guard with them and it’s not uncommon for diplomats to brings a pair of warriors with them when they go to barter.
Hunters: Responsible for the feeding of their pride through prey; the rank of hunter has an interesting history. It’s easily the rank that specialized and diverged the most between all four prides with each pride tending towards territory based specializations - Murkers, Runners, Tunnelers, Divers; the need to feed the pride forced a sense of necessity that encouraged the prides towards finally diverging based on differing techniques. Hunting roles are very prized by each of the prides because of this, often each role has a popular or famous story told to the apprentices and kits about the necessity of the role and how it helped everyone.
Crafters: The builders and creators of the prides. They weave barriers, baskets and sun-baked jars. They’re deeply important to keeping the camps of the prides secure and safe from predators such as in the case of the Roaring Thunder where bramble tears must be repaired immediately or how in the Frothing Shores, a torn patch of ferns can cause a leak that spawns mold. The talents of crafters are also extended towards more religious tasks such as the shaping and designing of talisman and bonding materials.
The Raging Wind are the odd ones out in that they never developed a crafter’s role and instead, the duties of crafters are broken up among the various warriors due to their system of heavy specialization. Tunnels are planned out, measured and built by tunnelers; the gorse ridge is maintained by the runners and their medic; the Moth is responsible for talisman and burials. With each of their warriors already deeply specialized for their duties, it never became necessary for crafters to become a dedicated role.
Sitters: The biggest helpers in the nursery, Sitters are the extra paws every monarch wishes desperately that they have when their kits get rambunctious. They’re the babysitters of the pride, responsible both for watching kits while their parents are out serving their pride and caring for orphaned kits. They’re the substitutes when a monarchs’ milk dries up early, passes in childbirth or had injuries that makes nursing difficult. They all have basic medical training specifically tailored to assisting medics during kitting - especially during the rare times two or more monarchs start kitting at the same time. They memorize the prefixes of various names and their associated meanings, offering advice to monarchs who request it.
Additional Ranks
Monarchs
Widely considered a kit’s first teachers, monarchs are nursing cats caring for their own kits in the nursery or recovering from their pregnancies. Kits will learn a great deal abouit the pride and their pridemates from their own parents for the first couple moons of their lives. Though they have Sitters to help them, they’re responsible for answering all questions and getting the basics of pride values instilled in their kits.
Most monarchs don’t stay in the nursery for their kit’s entire kithood and it differs from pride to pride what’s normal. The Crawling Shadows and the Frothing Shores monarchs stay in the nursery until their kits are about five months old - giving the parents a moon to readjust to sleeping alongside warriors before their kit moves into apprentice training. In the Raging Wind, monarchs only stay in the nursery until their kits are weaned and their milk dries up, then they move back into the warrior’s den though they are expected to visit play with their kits every day. In the Roaring Thunder, monarchs entire stay until their kits are a full six moons old or in the case of crowded nurseries, four moons old.
Apprentices
The next warriors of the prides, locked in a place between child and adult. Apprentices are in training to become fully fledged warriors having decided on a pathway when they were younger and been apprenticed to a warrior best suited for their goals. They spend the first half of their training working on the basics and adjusting to their new permissions and obligations and the second half mastering their trade. In general, a fresh apprentice is less likely to fight in battles - even in the Crawling Shadows - and when brought, typically serve as messenger and couriers. This is meant to acclimatize them to the aura of battle without necessarily risking them albeit, these apprentices are known for targeting each other specifically.
As an apprentice is still considered a child - vulnerable, naive and in need of guidance - it is strictly forbidden to romantically or sexually pursue an apprentice as a warrior. This rule is so strongly enforced that it’s often looked at strangely when one apprentice is promoted ahead of another and they’re still together. That said; it’s up to the leaders to decide upon the punishment for pursing an apprentice - most of the time it’s severe; outskirting, exile, execution and banishment are all potential consequences that are considered reasonable.
Kits
The youngest members of the pride and the pride’s future. A cat is considered a kit until they are six moons old or until they’re properly apprenticed as a kit can be held back or promoted early. They’re meant to spend the time until their promotion learning about the culture of the pride they live in and the values that are encouraged within them. The standards of what makes a “good kit” varies from pride to pride.
The Crawling Shadows values the tradition of kits being seen and rarely heard as it is in silence that the most learning is done. Most the Crawling Shadows kits enter their apprenticeships with a scattered variety of skills that they pick up from watching older apprentices and proper warriors. When kits are heard, the pride prefers that they’re speaking to their parents or elders; showing that they are well and truly attempting to learn from their pride.
the Roaring Thunder is the near polar opposite and fully believe that if kits aren’t being noisy and getting underfoot, there’s probably something wrong with your nursery. Kits are meant to ask questions whenever they can think of them, receiving answers from their pridemates and becoming increasingly more involved with everyday pride life. A kit who never speaks and never asks questions are often fretted over by their pridemates, Amberspirit being the prime suspect of harming them.
The Raging Wind kits are meant to be inquisitive but quiet, picking up as much as they can from everyday life and coming together to consolidate answers. The Raging Wind claims it promotes apprentice independence later down the line; something as important to the Raging Wind as their warriors understanding how important they all are to each other.
The Frothing Shores kits are often expected to merely stay out of the way. They want their kits to develop into shining individuals and so they want their kits to spend their kithoods playing, laughing and steadily developing into their own personalities. Kits decorating themselves with shells, chalks and other adornments are praised and encouraged to keep exploring themselves while more serious, soft kits are often given small gifts and toys to see about encouraging them to explore themselves more.
Elders
The Eldest and among the most honored cats in the prides that aren’t of the Anchored Stars. With the life of the average warrior being so bloody and filled with strife, the achievement of making it to an age you’re considered old is deeply respected by the cats of the prides. The permissions and privileges granted to the elders vary based on the pride but most are treated as incredibly worldly and wise cats. It’s not uncommon for leaders to consult elders about big pride-altering decisions they want to make.
Elders are also sometimes made by those who’ve received life-changing injuries and are no longer confident in their abilities nor are they willing to try to learn to work around them. Something the event surrounding an injury is so traumatic, the kindest thing a pride can do is allow the cat to retire to the elder’s den and hope they recover in peace. The most common injuries and conditions that result in retirement are head traumas - especially ones that severely affect memories and motor skills.
Being that the warriors of the forest prides are hot-blooded and near always active from the moment they’re old enough to contribute, the life of a retiree is often too dull and slow for them to appreciate. So killing two birds with one swipe, elders may specialize in the lore and history of the Nine Great Souls and the Spirits of pride mythology. The Era of the Ancients is considered critical for all younglings to hear of and learn from; there are many lessons that can be gained from the demigods, nature spirits and the Souls themselves. Those not interested in the ways and stories of the Souls and find themselves more drawn to helping the next generation also have the option of retiring to the Sitter’s den as a sitter themselves.
With the values and religious differences in the clans, it should be to no one's surprise that the way their families are made up are different from clan to clan. This can be a bit of a culture shock for young ones transferring or visiting clans as the fundamental dynamic of "family" changes.
Within ThunderClan, raising kits is considered a clan-wide duty. Everyone is responsible for the kits of the clan. Their determination to avoid angering Sweetsoul encourages every cat to help out when possible. This is a boon for new parents who receive more than just the aid of a Sitter when they’re struggling but also the assistance of apprentices, other warriors and even their own clan leader if the situation calls for it.
This is such an inherent part of ThunderClan culture that when Graystripe and Fireheart fed the cats of the RiverClan during the famine, they unintentionally bound ThunderClan to continued assistance. Once the first bit of prey passed the tongue of a kit in RiverClan, ThunderClan had basically accepted responsibility to the kits of RiverClan until the end of famine. This means that ThunderClan was essentially required to set up a diplomatic agreement between themselves and RiverClan until such a time that RiverClan could feed itself once more and therefore, ensure the safety of the kits.
Within ThunderClan, there is no such thing as the severing of parental rights - the same way some older folks in the real world don’t believe in divorce, ThunderClan simply doesn’t believe in parent to child disownment. So long as you draw breath, you are responsible for your child even if you’re not directly liable for their actions, their behavior reflects upon you. The role of the parent is so important in ThunderClan that they started a concept known as Sweetparents - a cat who with your blessing under the eyes of Sweetsoul - will act as the parent to your kits in the event that you pass away.
ShadowClan is equally stubborn about parental responsibility that is centered fully upon the fathers. In the eyes of ShadowClan, a molly’s job is to have kits to replenish their clan and provide a next generation. For the first six moons of a kit’s life, the molly will teach them the basics of being a ShadowClan cat, instilling in them the three pillars - Loyalty, Obedience and Faith - that make them worthwhile clanmates. Once a kit has received their apprentice name however, the mother’s duty to her kits is completely and she is no longer obligated to do anything for them.
From this point on, it’s the duty of the father or a fatherly mentor figure to finish bringing them up with all the intricacies and divots that come with being a ShadowClan warrior. It’s the father’s duty to show them emotional comfort and closeness, their job to encourage, praise and punish as they guide their kits towards adulthood.
RiverClan is sometimes referred to as the traditionalist clan for their stance on kit-rearing. A father is largely paws-off with their litter unless the mother gives them explicit permission to be involved with their lives - they have the most unnamed fathers because frankly, an unnamed sire doesn’t necessarily mean a cat from outside the clans. Many cats will name the sire regardless to ensure that everyone knows the blood is true, but unless you’ve expressed pro-loner sentiments or have spent a lot of time with loners, not naming your kit’s sire isn’t really reason enough to suspect someone of exo-clan relationships. This does mean however that in the case that a molly wants kits but not a mate, it’s not uncommon for her to simply request a kit-sire who will have no paternal connection to their kits.
A WindClan family is often small and personal - consisting of a mother, a father and their kits. These tight bonds create strong familial links - they’re most well-known for keeping track of their lineages even outside the line of Moth Flight’s kin. Long lines of specific roles with expectations from each are often pressed upon their kits. WindClan rarely ever has an unnamed sire or dame due to their determined tracking of their history - this applies even to visitor-spawned cats. Kits often remain extremely close to their parents well into adulthood in WindClan and it’s very difficult for young cats to pull away from their family if the expectations that their family enforces conflict with their own wants and desires.
Breaking the bond of parent and kit is a serious action that depends upon the clan.
Within ThunderClan, it’s an intensely serious affair. You must approach a boreal or a medic and state your desire to step down as a kit’s parent - something that may only happen when a kit is below the age of five moons old. When this happens, you inform them that parenting has proven itself to be too difficult for you and explain the efforts you’ve taken to solve the issue and how it’s not working out. Once the boreal or medic has gone through with the ceremony and your parental rights have been given away, you may not take up the mantle of parent again to these kits - ThunderClan believes strongly that the only cats who’ve waded through the most difficult part of having kits has the right to call themselves a parents. You cannot be a parent only when it’s easy.
This severity towards revoking parentage leads over to it being that ThunderClan has the fewest number of kit-sires in all the clans. Typically when a cat agrees to sire a litter for someone else, they’re not interested in the idea of parenting - the problem is that once that litter is born, should a tragedy strike and something happens to both kits' parents, you’ll find yourself responsible for those kits.
ShadowClan scorns the concept of a father turning away from his kits - it’s seen as one of the highest forms of abandonment a cat can perform. A father cannot sever the bond between himself and his child - he is always responsible for his kits. The mother’s mother on the other hand may pass off the kits the second they receive their apprentice name. A molly can’t even be accused of neglecting their child if it happens after a kit is of six-moons of age when a father is meant to have stepped up to care for his kits. The only time a molly can be successfully accused of neglecting her kits is when the mother is the sole parental influence the kit has had - in which case, she is considered both the mother and the father and therefore, vital to the upbringing of a kit.
When you turn away from a kit in WindClan, you’ve created a stigma upon yourself. A cat who steps away from their kits is often considered to be someone who will destroy a lineage at the drop of a leaf. It’s often difficult for these cats to find long-term mates with other members of their clan as they’re seen as fickle and disloyal. Creating and continuing lineages is among the most important aspect of having kits to WindClan - so kits that had their parents break away from them are considered fresh-lines. These cats will go on to create entirely new bloodlines for WindClan.
This is actually sometimes a necessary thing to do - even when a parent loves their kits, a full discussion will occasionally occur and a kit will decide they want to create a new lineage, or a parent decides their own lineage is tainted and doesn’t to infect the generations to come. As a result, they will end the line and separate their kit’s from themselves and grant them the freedom to carve their own paths and create their own lines.
A collection of four factions that have long since lived in the western forests. It’s been suggested by many that the cats of the forest came from many walks of life - loners of the coast, cats from the mountains and those who scattered from the gentle migration to the west. At one point there were five factions - the Stormborn, the Galespun, the Shorerisen, Fennyield and Etherforth but the Lost Faction found themselves at war with the migrating cats of that would become the new Kingdom of the Shining Sun. The violence between the two societies built higher and higher until Etherforth crossed a boundary triggering all-out war that the Etherforth lost.
The relationship between the Shining Sun and it’s neighboring factions has long since improved, the might of the cats of the kingdom have proved to the factions that isolationism was their best. As so, for a long time; the factions have remained private from the rest of the world, rarely accepting traders and artisans.
Recently this has changed and no one is sure yet if it was for better or for worse…

Depicted as a massive fire-golden caracal with a bleeding socket in the center of her forehead, Sunsoul is known as the provider goddess and the god of the day. For the creatures of the world, she pulled her third eye from her head and threw it into the sky to warm the creatures of the world. While the eye regrew, she watched the world steadily grow dark as the one in the sky began to fizzle out. She made the decision to pluck the third eye from her head every day, tossing it into the sky to light the way for the creatures of the world. It’s said that her eye was smaller back when she first started tossing it into the sky because she threw it up prematurely to make up for the emptiness of the night sky.
With her eye-plucking, Sunsoul is known as the goddess of compassion, kindness, martyrdom, the sun, lightning, fire and storms. It’s said that she gave ThunderClan their manes of fire when the Ancients still had the favor of the Souls and when they were trapped into their mortal forms, she didn’t have the heart to take them away and the large thick plumes of fur on her throat a marker of her previous favor.

When it became clear that Sunsou;’s eye wasn’t enough to warm the day and the night equally, he voluntarily threw his own silver eye into the sky during the night while Sunsoul’s eye regrew - it’s said that this decision is why the sun is bigger now than it was when the clans were first founded. Moonsoul frequently uses the eye in the sky to Look upon the creatures that roam the world beneath his gaze. When The First Great Battle broke out, Moonsoul grabbed the floating spirits of their dying clanmates and tossed them into the empty sky, allowing them to be seen by the living as stars.
Moonsoul is known as the god of peace, the dead, leaf-fall, secrets, the moon, travelers and the stars above. Moonsoul is in charge of the Souls of the dead and is the final barrier between a leader receiving all nine lives or receiving none at all - a cat who believes in him will have the opportunity for their Soul to be expanded nine times and therefore, receive nine lives. It’s said that when StarClan is silent even to the Prophets, that means that Moonsoul is looking down upon the clans personally and watching their behavior.

It’s said that the world grew dry under the combined might of Sunsoul and Moonsoul’s eyes but rather than make them stop, Riversoul reared up until his claws touched the sky and he tore it open bringing a shower of water down onto the land. When he removed his paw, the hole resealed itself - then he came up with an idea. He took his paw and dragged long paths and deep holes before clawing at the sky again. This time when it sealed, the fallen water followed the paths he dug to form lakes, rivers and streams. Many cats say that newleaf rain is the dripping of his pelt as he stretched over the world, shaking Sunsoul awake.
With this, Riversoul is known as the god of rain, moving water, water animals, the future and prophecies. Sometimes when Riversoul sees a particularly interesting dream, he’ll hold onto a creature to watch their dreams to completion - sometimes these cats never awake again.

Watching the violence of the world, Sweetsoul urged the creatures that roam to be more compassionate to each other - reminding all sides that every enemy they face is someone’s precious little one, a beloved child and if they can avoid a fight, they should. She taught the creatures to encourage the creatures of the world to redirect their passion towards protecting their family, to care for their weak and to nurture the bonds they’ve formed. Sweetsoul is a deeply loving Soul and can become enraged when others shirk their duty to their family and kin - her wrath knows no bounds when she thinks someone is neglecting their family or worse, showing them cruelty.
Sweetsoul holds the domains of kinship and warmth, pregnancy, fertility, safety, plenty and of course retribution. More felt than seen, Sweetsoul is often said to be the blaze of love you feel when looking at your kin, the exhausted love when giving birth to kits and the fury of a mother bear when your kin is in danger.

Wishsoul - The Ripple
A lanky bronzy serval with sharp eyes and a mischievous smile, Wishsoul is the Fluttering Wing. In fact, the absence of Bravesoul is exactly what separates a clan cat from an ordinary cat.
Bravesoul is of course the goddess of pride, strength, devotion, honor, strateg, kin war and battle strategy. Often a cat that feels Bravesoul the most intensely is the cat standing atop the defeated, panting forms of his enemies having painted a line in the sand with their blood and his between himself and their clan.
Domain: War, Blood Kin, Strategy, Strength, Devotion, Honor and Pride
Russettwine - Honor - You are blessed by the souls themselves and now you represent them, honor your blessings and lead a divinely guided life
Crowkit - Sacrifice - Sometimes being a leader means giving up on the dreams you have for yourself for the good of your clan
Redscar - Independence - Being a leader in any sense is exhausting, you need to stand on your own paws - let the Souls be your guide but don’t spend your life looking for signs
Brokentail - Resilience - The world will test your resolve at every turn; so dig in your claws and snarl back that you aren’t budging
Nightkit - Devotion - A clan is only as powerful as their leader’s ability to hold it together; from the smallest kit to the toughest warrior, stand firm for your clan mates
Oakslash - Justice - Punish the cruel and reward the loyal; a clan can only function if there are consequences for every action
Nightsabre - Humility - Knowing when to bow your head is as important as knowing when to stand firm, don’t let your ego blind you to the truths of the world
Thistleclaw - Ruthlessness - Be as ferocious in battle as you are in spirit, show no weakness and in turn, weakness will never find you
Raggedstar - Reflection - The hallmark of a true leader is to learn from his mistakes. I only looked back once I was dead - don’t make my mistake.
View their leaders as direct links to the gods - Souls and Spirits alike, to go against them is to speak against the Souls. So until the magic trio of Raggedstar, Brokenstar and Tigerstar came about; the leader was an unchallenged authority with the pride.
Though it may seem obvious to us, it never occurred to the Crawling Shadows who followed their three pillars that medics were also a cat with a direct link to the gods. Though they were viewed as higher than the average pride cat, they weren't exactly considered an authority. When it finally did, it was like the world turned itself upside down on them. The lakeside the Crawling Shadows for example pointed out that it was the medic Yellowfang who tried her best to save their pride and it was medic Runningbay who kept their pride from completely dying out when the illnesses raced through the camp.

Culture Note: Crafters are at the very bottom of the warrior hierarchy in the Crawling Shadows because they take immense pride in their ability to thrive in hard territory. They believe that relying on the builds and ease of technology would make them soft and eventually, lose favor in the eyes of the Souls.

The Roaring Thunder
After the nightmare that was Oakstar and The Mapleshade Incident, the Roaring Thunder believes that their leaders are merely agents of their will. While their leaders are closer to the Souls than ordinary warriors, allowing them to catch signs and such; they're not completely special, and the Souls aren't watching through their eyes.
The deputy in turn works as an agent of the pride's will and should a leader break the code or act in ways directly detrimental to the pride's survival, a deputy is expected to lead the charge in removing the leader from command. When leader and deputy argue, the pride usually becomes restless as factions form in the pride supporting either side.

The Raging Wind
the Raging Wind and the Frothing Shores respectively follow a system of voting which deprives the leaders of the mostly unchallenged authority they have in the other prides.
The Raging Wind believes specifically that a leader granted the 9 lives of the Meadows was approved of by the Souls and should be obeyed unless signs point otherwise. Because the Raging Wind deputies are essentially just secondary leaders, the Raging Wind demands that both leader and deputy agree with high decisions.
If they can't come to an agreement, then they open the decision up to the other high ranks in the pride - medic and diplomat. If they reach a tie then, the conflict is made public to the pride and it's debated until the pride believes all points exhausted or violence breaks out.

The Frothing Shores
As previously remarked, the Frothing Shores also follow a voting system like the Raging Wind, but leaders of the Frothing Shores have even less power than they do in the Frothing Shores. Sweeping pride-wide decisions such as modifications to the Frothing Shores's code, big camp expansion projects and other things along this line are always open to the high ranks of the pride by default.
The Frothing Shores believe that big decisions should never be made with uncertainty or large amounts of concern. As such, should the high ranks come to a tie; the decision is officially listed as a "no."
